THE BRIDE FOR THE DEVIL'S SON

Rain had been falling over the city for hours. Not the violent kind that crashed against rooftops and flooded the streets, but a steady, persistent drizzle that coated everything in a thin shimmering layer. The sidewalks glistened under the amber glow of streetlights, and cars passing by sent thin sprays of water toward the curb.Inside Crescent Café, the atmosphere was warm and quiet.Soft jazz music drifted through the speakers overhead, blending with the low murmur of conversation and the rhythmic hiss of the espresso machine. The air smelled of roasted coffee beans, chocolate, and fresh pastries. It was the kind of place people came to escape the outside world. And tonight, Lena Carter needed exactly that. She sat by the large window near the corner of the café, her laptop open in front of her and a half-finished latte beside it. The foam had long since settled, leaving a thin ring of caramel color around the rim of the cup.Her fingers hovered over the keyboard. Then stopped. She

The rain had softened into a steady drizzle by the time Lena glanced at the clock hanging above the café counter.Nearly two hours had passed. She blinked in surprise. It didn’t feel like two hours.Normally when she worked in cafés, time crawled painfully slow, especially when deadlines loomed over her like dark clouds. But tonight had been different.Instead of staring at a stubborn blinking cursor on her laptop, she had spent the entire evening talking with a stranger. And strangely enough, she didn’t regret it.Adrian sat across from her, looking just as relaxed as he had when he first arrived. His coffee cup had long since been emptied, but he didn’t seem in any hurry to leave.Neither of them did.Lena traced the rim of her mug with her finger absentmindedly.“You know,” she said, “most people would probably think it’s strange to spend two hours talking with someone they just met.”Adrian leaned back slightly in his chair.“Most people also spend those two hours staring at their

The city looked different from the rooftop at night.Lights stretched endlessly across the skyline, glowing like tiny constellations against the darkness. Cars moved through the streets below in slow streams of red and white, while distant laughter and music floated upward from the busy nightlife.Lena rested her arms lightly on the railing, letting the cool evening breeze brush against her skin.Dinner had ended nearly twenty minutes ago, yet neither she nor Adrian had suggested leaving.Somehow the night still felt unfinished.Behind her, the rooftop restaurant had grown quieter as other diners began to leave. Soft music still played through the speakers, blending with the low murmur of the city below.“You’re thinking about something,” Adrian said from behind her.Lena turned slightly.“You say that like it’s unusual.”“It depends on the kind of thinking.”“And what kind is this?”He stepped closer, resting one hand casually against the railing beside her.“The kind where you stare

Morning arrived quietly.Soft sunlight slipped through the thin curtains of Lena’s apartment, spreading warm light across the hardwood floor. The city outside was already waking up—cars humming along the streets, distant voices echoing between buildings—but inside her small apartment everything felt calm.Too calm.Lena stood in the kitchen wearing an oversized sweater, staring into the coffee machine while it slowly brewed. Her mind wasn’t on coffee. It was somewhere else entirely.More specifically, it kept drifting back to the rooftop restaurant from the night before. The city lights. The cool breeze.Adrian standing close beside her.And the kiss. She exhaled slowly and leaned against the counter.“This is ridiculous,” she muttered to herself. She had met him only two days ago.Two days.Yet somehow the memory of that moment replayed in her mind with perfect clarity. She grabbed her coffee mug and walked toward the small dining table where her laptop waited.Work.She needed to fo

The following morning, Lena woke with the strange feeling that something had shifted. Not dramatically. Not in a way she could easily explain. But something about the previous night lingered in her mind long after she opened her eyes. The walk by the river had been simple, yet somehow unforgettable. The quiet conversation, the lights dancing across the water, the warmth of Adrian’s hand in hers—it all felt surprisingly intimate for two people who had known each other less than a week. She rolled onto her side and grabbed her phone. No messages yet.Lena frowned slightly.Adrian had texted her every morning since they met.Not long messages—just small check-ins. Good morning, hope your writing goes well, don’t let architecture articles defeat you.It had quickly become part of her routine. She placed the phone back on the nightstand and sat up, stretching slowly.“Relax,” she told herself. “He probably just slept in.”Still, the quiet felt unusual.Across the city, Adrian was already a
