Cassandra sat in the small, cluttered living room, her hands wrapped around a chipped mug of tea she hadn't touched. The warmth of the cup did nothing to chase away the cold that had settled in her bones.

Adrian sat across from her, his face lined with grief, his eyes still red from crying. But there was something lighter in them now—something that looked almost like hope. Like a weight he'd been carrying for twenty years had finally been lifted.

"I want to know everything," Cassandra said quietly. "About my mother. About who she was before... before all of this."

Adrian nodded slowly, leaning back in his chair. "Elena was fierce," he said, a smile tugging at his lips. "She was always the brave one. When we were kids, she'd stand up to bullies twice her size. She'd fight for anyone who couldn't fight for themselves."

Cassandra's heart ached. "She sounds like someone I would have loved to know."

"She would have loved you." Adrian's eyes glistened. "She talked about you constantly. Even before you were born, she'd write letters to you. She'd tell me about the dreams she had for your future—how she wanted you to be free, to be happy, to never have to carry the weight of her choices."

Cassandra's throat tightened. "I found one of her letters. In the file."

Adrian's expression softened. "She always hoped you'd find them. She believed you'd be strong enough to handle the truth."

---

Adrian told her more about their childhood—the games they played, the secrets they shared, the bond that nothing could break. He told her about the night Elena came to him, terrified, clutching a file of evidence.

"She was shaking," Adrian said, his voice low. "She'd uncovered something—a conspiracy involving powerful men, corruption that went to the highest levels. She knew she was in danger. But she couldn't stop. She said she'd rather die fighting than live in silence."

Cassandra's throat tightened. "She was so brave."

"She was. And she was terrified." Adrian's voice cracked. "She made me promise to keep the evidence safe. She made me promise to protect you if anything happened to her."

Cassandra's eyes burned with tears. "And you did. You kept me alive."

Adrian shook his head, his face crumpling. "I failed her. I couldn't save her. I've been running ever since, haunted by the guilt."

Cassandra reached across the table, taking his hand. "You didn't fail her. You did what she asked. You protected me."

Adrian looked at her, his eyes wet. "I should have come for you. I should have raised you. Instead, I let your grandmother take you and I disappeared."

"Gran did what she thought was best," Cassandra said softly. "And you did what you had to do to survive. I don't blame you. I could never blame you."

Adrian broke down, his shoulders shaking. Cassandra moved to sit beside him, wrapping her arms around him. They held each other, the years of loss and guilt finally releasing.

---

After a long moment, Adrian pulled back. He wiped his eyes, his face resolute.

"There's something I need to show you," he said.

He crossed the room, kneeling beside the fireplace. He pried up a loose floorboard, revealing a small, dust-covered box. He lifted it carefully, setting it on the table in front of Cassandra.

"What is this?" she asked.

Adrian opened the box. Inside was a file—thicker than the one Evan had found. Documents. Photographs. Financial records. Everything Elena had gathered before she died.

Cassandra's hands trembled as she reached for it. "This is... this is what she died for."

"Yes." Adrian's voice was quiet. "I've kept it hidden all these years. I was too scared to use it. Too scared to risk your life."

Cassandra opened the file, her eyes scanning the pages. Names. Dates. Accounts. Evidence of corruption that went all the way to the top.

"Marcus Kane," she breathed. "He's at the center of everything."

Adrian nodded. "He's the one who ordered your mother's death. He's been covering his tracks for years. But this—" He tapped the file. "This is what will bring him down."

---

Dante stepped through the front door, his face tight with urgency. His eyes swept the room, landing on the file in Cassandra's hands.

"We need to leave," he said, his voice low. "I don't think we're alone."

Cassandra's blood ran cold. She looked at Adrian, then at the file in her hands.

Adrian's face went pale. "They found us."

Cassandra's grip tightened on the file. "I'm not running anymore. I've been running my whole life. I'm done."

Dante stepped closer, his hands cupping her face. "I know you're not running. But we need to be smart about this. We need to use this evidence, not let them take it from us."

Cassandra met his eyes, her gaze fierce. "Then we use it. Together."

She turned to Adrian. "Will you help me? Will you help us expose the truth?"

Adrian looked at her, at the determination in her eyes, the fire that reminded him so much of Elena. He nodded slowly.

"Yes," he said. "I'll help you. I've been hiding long enough."

---

Dante moved to the window, peering through the curtain. His body tensed.

"Car," he said. "Black. No plates."

Cassandra's heart pounded. "Marcus's men?"

"Probably." Dante grabbed her hand. "We need to go. Now."

Adrian grabbed the file, clutching it to his chest. They moved toward the back door, their footsteps quiet.

A shadow passed by the front window.

Cassandra's breath caught. "They're here."

Dante pushed open the back door, pulling her through. Adrian followed, the file tucked under his arm.

They ran into the woods, the sound of footsteps behind them.
