If the key is still inside the wall, removing it without understanding the mechanism could damage the listening chamber.”The warrior glanced towards the eastern passage. “I remember putting it there.”“You remember part of it,” Seraphina replied. “We need to know what happened before we start pulling things out of walls.”He looked away, his jaw shifting, but didn't argue.A knock sounded beneath the floor. Then another. The third made the silver-ring child retreat from the table. Its bare feet scraped against the stone as it backed towards the wall.“Don't answer,”
"They had knocked too."The crowned warrior's grip tightened around the table. His eyes remained shut as he tried to hold on to the memory. Every time he reached for it, something seemed to slip away, leaving him with scattered sounds and the uncomfortable feeling that he had forgotten something important.Seraphina watched his face. "You said you recognized the voice. Do you know who it belongs to?"He opened his eyes. "I recognize the sound. I've heard it before, but I can't remember the person's face."Kael moved closer to the door, keeping his weapon ready. "That doesn't prove the voice beneath us belongs to the person you remember."A light knock came from under the floor. The silver-ring child flinched and pressed its back against the wall. Its fingers closed around the ring."Don't answer," it whispered.Nobody had spoken, yet the warning made Seraphina glance at the floor. She turned back to the warrior. "Tell me about the person who stood behind you."He rubbed his injured pa
"That's what Mother said happened," the child whispered. "You knocked, and someone knocked back."The crowned warrior stared at the floor. His expression had changed, but he seemed unable to decide what to ask next."How many times did I knock?"The child rubbed its thumb over the silver ring. "Mother never counted them.""What happened after someone answered?""She said the lamp went out. Then you stopped knocking.""Did she tell you who answered?""No. She said the person inside was afraid."His jaw tightened. "Afraid of me?"The child lowered its head. "She wouldn't tell me."A faint vibration travelled through the corridor. Kael immediately raised his weapon, shifting his attention towards the bedroom."We're not staying here listening to whatever's underneath us.""Wait," Seraphina said. She crouched and pressed her palm against the wooden boards. Moisture had gathered in the narrow gaps between them. The surface felt unpleasantly cold, and she could smell damp earth beneath the
"And now," the child whispered, "it wants you to remember the other one."The crowned warrior remained on his knees, staring at the closed bedroom door.Kael stepped between him and the entrance. "What exactly were you ordered to do?"The warrior pressed his injured hand against the floor. The red marks beneath his sleeve had darkened, but he seemed more troubled by the question."I was told to bring one child home.""By whom?" Seraphina asked."I can't see his face. I only remember his voice.""Was he standing in the room with you?""No. Behind me, I think. I was holding a key. There was a woman with a lamp, and someone was crying behind a door."Kael exchanged a glance with Seraphina."Did the woman know about the order?" he asked."She knew there were two children."The warrior stopped speaking. His eyes narrowed as another fragment surfaced."I think she tried to stop me."A faint scrape came from behind the bedroom door. The child moved closer to Seraphina, gripping her sleeve."
The dragging sound grew louder.Something scraped across the bedroom floor, stopping whenever the crowned warrior moved. The noise came from deep inside the room, followed by a faint bump against the wooden boards. The child stood in the doorway with one hand pressed against its chest. Its face had gone pale, and its eyes kept darting towards the darkness behind it.Seraphina raised the Sword of Dawn."Get away from that doorway."The child didn't move."Come here," she ordered."It knows I'm here.""Then it can know you're leaving."The child shook its head. "It won't let me."A heavy scrape sounded inside the bedroom. The door shifted against its hinges, although nothing visible stood behind it.Kael moved closer to Seraphina. "Rowan, get the children out of this corridor."Rowan signalled the guards. Elara resisted when one approached, refusing to release Cael's hand."I'm not leaving him.""You're both coming with me," Rowan replied. "Your mother needs room to deal with this."Ela
Seraphina reached the eastern sitting room just as Rowan pushed through the doorway.Elara was on the floor beside an overturned table. Cael stood near the fireplace, one hand pressed against his chest, while the healer had retreated into a corner with her medical bag clutched against her stomach. Two guards were trying to hold the heavy curtains away from the windows. There was no wind. The shutters were closed, yet the curtains kept lifting as though someone were moving behind them."Elara!"Seraphina dropped beside her daughter. Elara grabbed her arm, breathing hard, and pointed beneath the table."Something came out."Seraphina drew the Sword of Dawn. "What did you see?""Fingers. A hand." Elara swallowed. "It reached for Cael."Kael entered behind Rowan and went straight to the boy. He stopped before touching him when Cael flinched."Are you hurt?" Kael asked.Cael shook his head."What happened?""I heard Elara scream." His eyes shifted towards the table. "Then the floor moved."
