AVA-ROSE'S POV

By the time I stumbled back onto Drexel Forest territory, it was a few minutes to five in the afternoon, and I knew I had fucked up.

Badly.

My little trip to Winifred's cabin should have taken no more than six hours there and back, plus whatever time I spent talking to her. I had done it enough times to know exactly how long I could be gone without anyone noticing.

What I hadn't planned on was stopping at a spring for water and somehow falling the fuck asleep.

I had only meant to rest for a few minutes.

The spring was one of my favourite spots in the forest, with cold water flowing between smooth rocks and a large willow tree providing enough shade to hide beneath. After running for hours, my legs were burning, my throat was dry, and every muscle in my body felt like it had been beaten with a stick.

So I drank.

Then I sat.

Then I rested my head against the tree.

The next thing I knew, the sun had moved across the fucking sky.

I nearly broke my neck getting up.

I had been running ever since.

Now, as I hurried through the woods with sweat running down my back and my heart beating hard against my ribs, I prayed Alastor was still asleep.

Usually, he wouldn't crawl out of bed until around five after one of his long nights of drinking, killing and fucking.

Usually.

Today was apparently the day I had decided to test my luck.

I was almost at the pack house when a familiar scent hit my nose.

Sandalwood and cinnamon.

Shit.

"Where the hell have you been?"

I stopped.

Trenton stepped from behind one of the trees with his arms folded across his chest.

Of course.

Of all the wolves I could have run into, it had to be him.

"Good evening to you too," I said as I continued walking.

He stepped directly into my path. "I asked you a question."

"And I heard you."

"Then answer me."

"I don't have to."

His jaw tightened. "Ava."

"Trenton."

"Where the hell have you been all day?"

I folded my arms and stared at him. "Last time I checked, I rejected you, which means where I go and what I do are none of your fucking business."

His eyes flashed.

"It becomes my business when you disappear before sunrise and come strolling back onto pack territory minutes before five."

My stomach tightened, but I refused to let it show on my face.

He knew when I left?

"Have you been watching me?"

"It doesn't matter."

"It does. I need my fucking privacy."

"Not when you are his wife and Luna."

I snarled, and then I stepped around him. I didn't need him to remind me that my life wasn't really mine anymore or that I was Alastor's prisoner.

His hand caught my arm.

Every muscle in my body immediately stiffened.

"Let me go."

"Ava, I'm not trying to fight with you."

"Then you're doing a terrible job."

He released me.

I continued towards the pack house, but Trenton followed.

"Your daughter has been asking for you all day."

I stopped so abruptly that he nearly walked into me.

Rachel.

I turned around.

"Where is she?"

Trenton's expression changed. "In the private dining area."

"With whom?"

He hesitated.

My wolf immediately became restless. "Trenton, answer my fucking question. Who is my daughter with?"

"She's with Alastor."

My heart dropped into my stomach. "No! I have to get to her now."

"Ava..."

I didn't wait for him to finish.

I ran.

"Ava!" Trenton shouted behind me.

I ignored him.

My feet pounded against the ground as I raced towards the pack house. Wolves moved out of my way as I stormed through the front doors and nearly collided with one of the servants.

"Move!"

She jumped aside. "Pardon me, Luna."

I ran down the hallway.

Why the fuck was Rachel alone with Alastor?

He barely spent time with her.

He acknowledged her when he felt like it, bought her expensive things she never asked for, occasionally demanded she sit beside him during our once-in-a-blue-moon family dinners, and reminded everyone that she was the Alpha's daughter.

But playing daddy?

That wasn't Alastor.

My mind immediately went to Rachel's scent.

No.

She wasn't seven yet.

There was still a month left until her birthday.

Her wolf couldn't have awakened early.

Could it?

My wolf pushed anxiously beneath my skin as I reached the private dining area.

The doors were partly open.

I slowed.

Then I heard something that stopped me completely.

Laughter.

Rachel's laughter.

And underneath it was something deeper.

A man's chuckle.

Alastor.

I pushed the door open farther.

Then I froze.

Alastor was sitting on the floor.

I actually blinked because, for a moment, I thought the lack of sleep had finally made me hallucinate.

The Alpha of Drexel Forest, the man who sat on a throne made from the bones of his enemies, was sitting cross-legged on the floor with his back towards me.

Rachel was sitting in front of him.

There were little wooden animals scattered between them, along with half-eaten slices of fruit and a glass of juice that Rachel had apparently forgotten existed.

"You cheated, Papa Alastor!" Rachel giggled.

"I am the Alpha. I don't cheat."

"You did!"

"Prove it."

Rachel laughed again.

Alastor chuckled.

I couldn't move.

I couldn't remember the last time I had heard that sound come from him without somebody else suffering.

For one tiny moment, he didn't look like the monster who had destroyed my life.

He looked like a father playing with his daughter.

Except she wasn't his daughter.

My stomach twisted.

Then Alastor's body stiffened.

The laughter stopped.

I knew immediately what had happened.

He smelled me.

Rachel hadn't noticed me yet, but Alastor slowly lifted his head.

He didn't turn around.

He simply picked up one of the wooden animals and placed it in front of Rachel.

"Rach, look," he said.

My daughter looked towards the door.

Alastor remained perfectly still. "Your mama's home."

By the time the carriage rolled through the gates of Drexel Forest, Alastor hadn't spoken another word to me, and I hadn't spoken to him either.I sat as far away from him as the carriage allowed, holding the torn front of my dress together while his threat replayed in my head for what felt like the thousandth time. You and him are dead.Him, as in Trenton. He suspected us, and I didn't know how much he knew or how long he'd been suspicious. Apparently, I hadn't been as careful as I thought. Ten years of sneaking around with Trenton, and perhaps all it took to expose us was the way I referred to my own daughter. My daughter. Not ours.Mine."Stop thinking so loudly."I turned my head towards Alastor. He was staring through the window as the carriage moved past the sleeping cottages scattered throughout the pack. His reflection stared back at me in the glass, and although his face was calm, I could see the faint red still lingering in his eyes."I wasn't aware you could hear thoughts n

  • THE UNSUBMISSIVE LUNA: THE RISE OF THE SHEWOLVES   19: Our Daughter

My stomach turned as I watched Pussy swallow Alastor's cum.I felt sick, but more than anything, I felt disrespected. He had made me sit there and watch another woman pleasure him with her mouth as though humiliating me was the final item on his agenda for tonight, and judging by the satisfied smirk on his face, he had enjoyed every second of it.Kennedy had been pacing inside me the entire time. The mate bond was eating my wolf alive, twisting jealousy and anger through my chest even though I wanted nothing from the bastard sitting across from me. For once, though, I didn't care what the bond wanted. All I kept thinking was that in a few days Alastor would leave for his hunting trip, and I would take Rachel and disappear from his life.I almost smiled imagining him returning to Drexel Forest and discovering us gone. I wished I could hide somewhere just long enough to watch that arrogant smirk disappear from his face.Maybe I'd even leave him a note.~Dear Mate From Hell,Fuck you.I

"What do you mean she should take me to Mount Hecate?" Ashley asked."I'll explain later, Ashley," Opal said as she carefully helped her back onto the tiny bed. "Right now, I need to take the Luna to her Alpha. We've already been here too long."Ashley looked between the two of us, clearly confused, but I didn't have time to explain something I didn't completely understand myself.Especially since I had a few questions of my own.We left Ashley crying in her room, and the second Opal closed the door behind us, I followed her down the corridor. For the first few minutes, we walked in silence. Opal moved quickly through the confusing hallways while I stayed close behind her, trying to memorize the turns in case I ever needed to find my way out of this damn fortress again. Then she started talking.Or, better yet, she talked and I listened."I know you're wondering how I know about your plans," she whispered, glancing over her shoulder. "But Winifred didn't betray you. I was there this m

I was too shocked to even speak. The Vampire King. For a moment, I just stared at Roland's daughter while trying to understand how one father could stand downstairs celebrating the future marriage of his son while keeping his own daughter locked away upstairs because she refused to be sold to another man.And I thought my family was fucked up."He's gone again," Roland's daughter suddenly whispered, glancing towards the door. "You have to go."I heard the fading footsteps too, but before I could move, someone knocked softly on the door.I jumped, and Kennedy immediately rose inside me, ready to tear through my skin if necessary, but then the scent reached my nose.Herbs.Magic.Witch.I knew exactly who it was.Roland's daughter hurried towards the door and opened it just enough to see outside."Opal, what are you doing here?"Opal slipped inside and quickly closed the door behind her. The coast was clear, at least that was what I told myself. I didn't hear any scuffling outside the door, which meant Dwight was maybe looking for me on another floor.I still made up my mind to stay put for a while longer, just in case he was quietly waiting for me outside the door.'It smells like death in here,' Kennedy pointed out. 'I don't think we're alone.'She rose inside me.I turned slowly to take a good look at my surroundings, and I had to place my hand over my nose. It smelt like sickness and pestilence in here.My eyes adjusted to the darkness as I slowly moved away from the door.I could sense the racing heartbeat now."Who's there?""Please, you shouldn't have come here."I froze. It was a young woman.I hadn't noticed her when I'd rushed inside because the room was almost completely dark, with only a thin strip of moonlight slipping between the heavy curtains. She sat curled up on a tiny bed with her bare feet tucked beneath her and her arms wrapped around her knees. Rachel. My sweet little girl who still sucked her thumb when she was tired, who believed witches turned annoying people into frogs and who had spent part of the carriage ride asking why her mama and papa didn't kiss enough. They were standing here discussing her future like she was a piece of land being traded between kingdoms. Worse, this monster was already looking pleased by the idea that one day she would belong to him."That will never happen," I said.RJ's attention snapped towards me, and he studied my face for several seconds before smiling."You must be the Luna.""I'm Rachel's mother.""Then I suppose we'll be family.""No."His smile faltered slightly as I stepped towards him."You will never be her family. I don't care what agreement your father made with Alastor, and I don't care what either of them promised you. Rachel will never marry you."The room gradually became quieter around us, and even Roland stopped laughing.RJ's red eyes seemed to brighten as he looked at me,

I wasn't always this unhappy. I was a happy child who grew up in a happy home. Memories of my childhood were what kept my belief that happiness existed. I slipped out of my heels and quietly pushed the door open. The room was a little dark, but my were-vision assisted me with finding my way around the pink room. I stepped on something sharp. I swallowed my yelp and paused, waiting for the sting to subside. I peered down and removed the Lego piece a
