KNOX'S POV

Elder James closes the door behind us with the pitch of a sealed coffin.

The private chamber is designed with portraits of previous council elders staring down with judgment frozen into oil paint.

It's the kind of room where careers are destroyed and reputations are buried, where power brokers come to feast on the carcasses of men who made the mistake of showing weakness.

James thinks I'm about to show weakness.

He's wrong.

    KNOX’S POV“She’s the lady of this house now. It falls to her. That’s simply how it is.” I keep my voice even. “But you’ll attend. As the guest of honour. The whole gala will rise and toast you, and it will be a farewell fit for a Volkov. A proper one. Grand. Everything you’re owed for the years you gave this place.” And I mean it, and I need her to hear that I mean it. “That’s my gift to you, Hale. We say our goodbyes at the feast, in front of everyone, with honour and with witnesses. And then you go to your new life with your head held high. But until then—” and here my voice hardens. “—you stay away from Ember.”Her chin comes up.“Away from her.”“I don’t understand everything that’s happened between the two of you,” I say. “I don’t understand why you took her to Celeste’s room. I don’t understand the things she’s told me or the way the two of you look at each other like there’s a war already declared. I don’t have the energy for this, and I’ve made my peace with the fact that I m

    KNOX’S POV“Knox—” It comes out strained.“I told you that one day you’d be free of this house,” I say. “That you’d go out into the world, and it would finally see how clever you are, and it would be sorry it ever tried to make you small. That you wouldn’t have to work twice as hard to be worthy.” I hold her wet, furious gaze. “I meant it then, Hale. I mean it now. That’s what this is. It’s a punishment. It’s not a banishment. This house—” I gesture at it, the walls, the shelves, the grandmother’s crowded things “—this house is another linen press. A beautiful one. The most comfortable one in the world. You finally have what you always wanted: their respect. They don’t whisper about ‘Creepy Hale’ anymore; they bow to the former Lady of the house. I know exactly how intoxicating that tastes, and I know you’d burn the world down before you ever go back to being a joke. But you have spent your whole life being Knox Volkov’s cousin, who runs the house. And you are so much more than that;

  • TRADING MY CHEATING HUSBAND FOR THE LYCAN KING   CHAPTER 367: 72 HOURS LEFT

    KNOX’S POVI go to Hale after breakfast, which is to say after one cup of coffee and most of a second, because I put it off exactly as long as I can justify and not one minute longer.She’s in the small sitting room she’s colonised over the years, the warm one in the east wing with her grandmother’s things crowding every shelf and the permanent smell of dried herbs hanging in the air.She’s at the window with her tea when I fill the doorway, and her whole face opens when she sees me, warm and delighted, the way it always does.“Knox! Up before noon two days running, that’s practically a feast day. Sit, I’ll ring down for—”“Hale.”Something in my voice stops her hand halfway to the bell. She sets the tea down instead, slowly, and folds her hands in her lap, and her head tilts.“That’s your bad-news voice, cousin. You’ve had it since you were twelve. Out with it.”“You’re moving out.”I watch it land. I watch the warmth drain out of her face by degrees, watch her go pale and then very

    KNOX’S POVShe’s right, Phantom says, low and certain, fully awake now. She’s been right since the first night. The house is wrong.“Ember—”“And the wolf.” She turns to me, and now there’s something almost desperate threading through it. “In the fight. With Hale. I know you decided it was a concussion. I know that’s the sensible answer, and Goddess, you love a sensible answer; you’d file the apocalypse under ‘weather’ if you could.” A humourless breath. “But I know what I felt, Knox. I reached for Sapphire—on purpose, controlled, exactly the way you taught me. And she came. I felt the silver start in my hands. And then Hale did something, and it didn’t falter, it didn’t fumble, it stopped. Like a door slamming shut inside me. Sapphire was there, and then she was gone, and I could not reach her, and that’s when Hale put me on the floor.” Her voice cracks at the edges. “And then the blood from her eyes. And the way she looked older after. Aged. Like the fight peeled years off her right

  • TRADING MY CHEATING HUSBAND FOR THE LYCAN KING   CHAPTER 365: SOMETHING BIGGER

    KNOX’S POVI go still. I already have the gist of it—she called me earlier this night, and she gave me the facts straight: my housekeeper had been moving sedated women through the servant tunnels in a hood.One of them had a fresh knife wound. Marjorie had drawn a blade on Reyes and called my fiancée a witch.I stood in the cold outdoors with the phone pressed to my ear and felt the floor tilt under me.I told Ember to do what she felt was right, and I meant it—and then I did not come home for four more hours, because I could not make myself face what waited here“She’s in the holding cells,” Ember says. “I kept her solitary. Where you—where I put her.” Her hand fists slightly in the sheet over my chest. “I keep thinking I should feel something clean about it. Vindicated, maybe. She pulled a knife, Knox. On Reyes. There was blood on those girls, actual blood, and she called me a witch and started screaming about the moon bleeding, and I did the right thing. I know I did the right thin

  • TRADING MY CHEATING HUSBAND FOR THE LYCAN KING   CHAPTER 364: BACK AT 3AM

    KNOX’S POVIt’s past three when I finally give up on the crown for the night and go to her.I shower first, in the dark, because I’ve been in a cold garage and three colder meetings and I’ve got the whole ugly day still on my skin, and I don’t want to bring any of it into that bed.It’s a rule I’ve made without ever saying it aloud: whatever the day is, whatever’s rotting out there in the world with my name on it, I wash it off before I touch her.She gets the clean version. She’s earned the clean version.That’s the whole reason I do any of it, if I’m honest with myself.The councils, the reports, the endless machinery of holding a continent together while everyone else sleeps—I grind through all of it, every night, chasing the one moment I get to walk into that room and find her waiting.A man can carry almost anything if there’s a warm bed and a warmer woman at the end of it. I didn’t use to believe that. I do now.I come out, towelling my hair, and she’s awake.Of course she’s awa
