Jessie was five years old at the time her parents died in a vehicle accident. Her aunt, who was left as her guardian, sold her to a wealthy family, who treated her as their own daughter. She had no idea that they had already planned her destiny, which was to marry their only son, Christian Dawson. Her life was perfect until Christian's family declared bankruptcy just before their wedding. In order to help her fiancé to save the company, she took a surrogacy commission from Claire to obtain money quickly because she couldn't get pregnant due to kidney disease. Christian thought Jessie had duped him and abandoned him when he was at his lowest moment. When she returned to Christian after delivering birth, his feelings for her shifted from love to hatred. He married her anyhow, but he slept with other women on purpose in order to exact revenge on Jessie. At this point, Jessie met Claire's husband, Jacob Parker. Jacob married Claire for financial reasons, not for love. He harbored no feelings for her, because he didn't believe in love. However, he needed to find a surrogate in order to meet his parents' desire for an heir. What he didn't comprehend was that Claire's eggs were inedible. Claire lied to everyone about how successful the process was, and she actually used Jessie's eggs. She insisted on Jessie keeping the secret, or she would not be paid. Claire sadly died in a plane crash shortly before Jessie gave birth.

It was a drowsy pink, the kind of fanciful tint that clung with tiny wings before vanishing into the hazy darkness of the night. As the mist rose around the rugged bluffs, waves crashing against the coast could be experienced.I was trying to suppress a smile when I heard a very loud sniffle. At that moment, Grandma was crying into her handkerchief. I looked into the eyes of my best friend Tina and saw the excitement that was radiating in them. As the sun dropped below the horizon, her silver clothing shone like magical dust. Logan, her boyfriend, smiled broadly and gave me a thumbs up. Yes. Jacob’s brother, Logan, was now Tina’s boyfriend, and I had no idea that they were childhood best friends.Next came Jacob’s mom and dad; his mom, who accepted me with all her heart when she found out about Claire, dabbing her eyes, while his dad was smiling wid
Jacob’s P O VClaire started to laugh, her shoulders shaking when I told her how I found out that she’s not Joe’s biological mother. ''You’re also the person behind Jessie's shooting, right?’’Her face turned serious, her eyes glinted with malicious satisfaction.''I will not file another case against you. All you need to do is sign this divorce petition...''She shook her head. ''Do you want to see what you have done to me?’’ she asked instead. ''I have loved you, Jacob, but you said you didn’t believe in love. I came back from being dead, but when I was set to come back to you, you were already in love with someone else!''I couldn’t form a reply. The words withered in my mouth, it was as if I had been struck. I felt myself shrinking in my seat, my head bowing to evade the triumphant sneer on Claire’s face. How could I tell her that I didn’t believe in love before I met Jessie? That Jessie was the one who taught me how to love?''Do you want to see what I have become, trapped in thi
Jacob’s P O VTHREE MONTHS LATERI rose to my feet when the warden brought her in. She was leaning on a cane, and there was a metal brace running up her leg. What happened to her?Did she happen to have an accident? Or probably got into a fight with her fellow inmates? Her dark eyes met mine. Her face was completely devoid of any sign of emotion. She has lost a lot of weight. Her dark hair had been cut short, like a man’s cut, had shaved along the sides, and her face was pale and shrunken.Claire was recognizable.''Claire…’’ I called out softly as she sat down across from me. I sat down as well, laid the documents in front of her. The guard hovered in the background. ''How are you?’’Claire looked at me. Her face was impassive. ''What are you doing here?'' she asked, looking down at the documents, and then looked back up at me.''I… I want you to sign the divorce papers…’’I waited for her to get mad, but instead, she smirked. ''To marry the surrogate?’’''I love her…’’ I said. ''You
Christian's P O V''How are you?’’ Jessie asked, her eyes looking worriedly at me.''I’m…’’ how could I tell her that I wasn’t feeling okay? That I was sorry for everything I had done to her? ''I’m okay…’’There was a silence. Long and painful silence surrounded us.''I’m glad you’re doing okay…’’ she said softly.''T-thank you… for coming,’’ I said, my fingers moved, wanting to hold her hand.''I would have come sooner, but I…’’ she paused. ‘‘I wasn’t ready…’’Why?I wanted to ask her why she wasn’t ready. My mind, however, was clouded by the mists, which made it difficult for me to think clearly and to maintain my alertness.''I love you, Jessie…’’ I heard myself say. I needed to tell her. It was important that she had to hear it. Anything can happen. I could die today. I could die tomorrow. She needed to know that I loved her, that I have always loved her. ‘‘You know that, do you?’’Jessie looked down at her hands, avoiding my gaze.''Please, Jessie… Look at me…’’She said nothing.
Christian's P O VI could hear footsteps nearby, and the low buzz of voices. Then there was a peculiar silence—but a strange silence, a different kind of silence.Instantaneously, my eyes opened, and I noticed that I was in bed. In a strange bed, sheathed in white sheets. As I looked at the radiator, I noticed that there was a window just above it. I looked out the window, and it was raining.I was surrounded by words that were muffled and at a distance. ''He’s awake…’’ someone murmured.''I think he’s stable…’’ another voice said.I slowly turned my head when a woman suddenly appeared beside me. She was dressed in a scrub, probably a nurse.''You’re in the hospital, Mr. Dawson…’’ the nurse explained. ''The officers have some questions to ask you…’’ She looked up at the tall man beside her. ''Please, make it fast…’’ In a tone that suggested she was not the least bit intimidated by his size, she spoke the words, ''He needs to rest…’’''Hi, Sir…’’ the giant man smiled at me. ''I’m Detec
Jacob’s P O V''I have one more thing to tell you, son...'' Kyle said. ''It’s regarding your… to Miss Sinclaire’s ex-husband, Christian Dawson…’’I waited, fully aware of what he was going to say next.''Mr. Dawson was attacked in his apartment which he shared with your wife…’’ he directed a curious look at me. ''What are your thoughts on the fact that she is still alive and has survived the plane crash? Have you any clue why she chose to stay with Mr. Dawson rather than going back to you and your son?''I gave a slight shake of my head. ''I don’t want to talk about her anymore, and I have nothing to say about her having an affair with Dawson. All I knew was that, he was castrated by Claire, and she is the prime and only suspect…’’ I said flatly. He nodded. ''There is evidence that cannot be disputed supporting the conclusion that Miss Johnson was the perpetrator of the crime. The CCTV footage, and the blood on her clothes, her body, her shoes. But she has remained silent. She has ref
Jacob’s P O VThe whole scene was captured in slow motion, in the bright daylight. For a moment, I shut my eyes, took a deep breath, and remembered him as he stepped out from hiding behind the tree, clad in a black hoodie, billowing at the sleeves. I knew he’d come for her. For Jessie.I had known, and sensed it somehow, and the first thing that came to my mind was to protect her. I remember how time stopped, screeched to a halt, that breathless moment, before I threw myself at him.I remember the sharp metal drilling into me before my body fell to the ground. And when I heard Jessie scream my name, that was the moment when I could finally surrender to the relief, the enormous lightening relief that Jessie was no longer in danger, and I could give in to the pain, the weakness taking over my entire body, the tremor spreading like an unstoppable rash, making me, my whole body tremble.I was filled with such dread. I had taken an enormous risk. I had come so close to losing Jessie, but I
CLAIRE’S P O V''Why did you do that?'' my mother asked, and she appeared to be very elderly and worn out; she had a look of melancholy in her eyes. Her breathing had changed to a rumble. I stared at her sad face, remembering the last time I had seen her, smiling so kindly, so warm at me. ''These things happened…'' she had said after I came back from the plane crash where they thought I was already dead. ''Some marriages are just not meant to be. Don’t mind what your dad has to say…''''Why do you stay with him?'' I had asked her when I found out that he had been hurting her. And he was living with his mistress now, and not with my mom. He only goes home to mom at weekends.''I took vows…'' she had said. ''I believe in infidelity. Your dad is not an easy person to live with, but he’s still my husband, and he gave me you, our beautiful daughter. I understand your dad. I’m used to his ways. We’ve lived together for years, and I would never leave him…’’Poor mom. She loved dad too much,
CLAIRE’S P O VThe detective and the woman spoke to each other in a corner of the interrogation room. My ears filtered out their low whispers as I sank, closed my eyes, nestled into the crook of the plastic chair. The air became peaceful and still, and I floated away from them. With one hand I idly stroked the arm of the chair, the other hand skimmed over my cardigan. Well, it's not exactly my cardigan. Someone made me take off my coat, then my clothes, then made me wear this cardigan and those ugly pants. I couldn’t remember who, but here I was, pinching a roll of skin bulging from my tummy. I was trapped in a police interrogation room, fondling my fat. This was a new low.The chairs scrapped in front of me, quick and crisp. I opened my eyes and looked up. I saw a woman with a pointed nose, wearing a long black coat.''Hold on…'' Detective Reese told me. ''We’re just organizing certain documents…'' this man had a nice, deep rumbling voice. He’s huge, a bear of a man, with red hair an
