Chapter 21

Chapter 21: Her Special Ability

"Prudence just lost the last of their best trackers. All we have right now is Hyrum," said Calgary as we gathered at the pack house with Alpha Quira, her Beta, Ariz, Lynel, Alpha Lawrence and Ahma.

My fingers clasped. The atmosphere around was too thick, probably because we all know that our District is in so much trouble.

Mayhem had no trackers for two decades now while Claivan was never given any. Trackers are special types of wolves who can sense anything even when it was miles away. They were born with the strongest senses. Some show their abilities early like Mom, some were late bloomers.

Zenios' tracker was my mother that's why even when she was only a Beta she-wolf back then, she would always work hand in hand with Alpha Lawrence because she was very significant to our pack.

I saw Alpha Lawrence straightened his back. "If Nadine was able to sense Luhence while everybody else didn't, maybe that's because she inherited Nimpha's abilities."

All eyes focused on me when I lifted my head to look at Alpha Lawrence. I was surprised that he didn't shame me in front of everyone, as if for the first time, he was able to see me more than his great love's daughter.

"Nadine? Do you think you are a Tracker?" Lynel asked while everybody kept their eyes on me, waiting for me to respond.

I nervously rubbed my palms on my thighs. "I'm not so sure."

"We can do some tests to find out if she is," said Alpha Quira before she dragged her Beta, Lynel, and Calgary outside.

They spoke for a few moments before the three left. When they disappeared into the woods, Alpha Quira went back inside, her cold pair of chocolate eyes landed on my direction.

"Find Calgary as soon as you can."

"But..." I clenched my hands. "What if I'm not a Tracker?"

"At least give it a try. You've been wanting to prove yourself for years." Alpha Lawrence looked at me. "This is the time to do that."

We remained staring at each other for a few moments until I finally gained the courage to do what Alpha Quira asked. I stood up and went outside where they all followed me. When we reached the woods, I took a deep breath and let Auror come into the surface. As soon as we balanced in my mind, we began searching through our intuition.

It was hard. All directions have that same familiar scent, so when I realized I couldn't do it, I looked over my shoulder and was about to tell them that they were wrong about me. But Alpha Lawrence gave me a nod, as if he was telling me to believe in myself.

I didn't know why that simple gesture of the man who despised me all throughout my life, gave me the motivation to prove myself. It helped me have faith in my own ability, and as soon as I focused again, I shut my eyes and tried to connect myself with nature.

I removed my shoes and started taking slow steps. It felt magical, as if for the first time, I was able to connect my own feet to every single root beneath the ground. Each one was linked to another, giving me the ability to feel where Calgary, Lynel, and Ariz were standing at.

The wind blew hard, the scent I was looking for began to be stronger than the other two. When my eyes opened again, I let all my other senses take me to Calgary.

They followed me as I made my way to Calgary's spot. My lips stretched widely as we locked eyes, the sense of pride was written on his handsome face.

"I knew it," said Alpha Lawrence.

"Ariz and Lynel wore Calgary's scent yet she still managed to find Calgary even when Lynel already made him wear a different shirt." Alpha Quira looked at Calgary. "She just needs a little training."

Cal looked at me while his hand was on my lower back. "I haven't trained a Tracker before. None of the other Alphas who ruled Claivan did because we never had one. I don't think I'm the one who should do the job." His eyes turned to Alpha Lawrence. "Lawrence should."

My lips parted in surprise as I unconsciously gazed at Alpha Lawrence's direction. He, however, dodged my gaze as if he was not interested. "Hyrum must be the one to train her. They're both Trackers."

"Hyrum will begin tracking by tomorrow. He won't be here to train Nadine," said Calgary.

Ahma held Alpha Lawrence by his shoulder. "It wouldn't hurt to train her. After all, she still belongs to your pack."

I bowed my head when I saw Alpha Lawrence glanced my way. There was a moment of silence as we waited for his decisions, and when he finally spoke, my eyes widened because I didn't really expect him to agree.

"She better work on her combat skills, too. Yes, she won the selection, but her moves are still too lame." He glared at me as he turned his back on everyone. "Get yourself ready for tomorrow. We'll take a run before sunrise. I won't wait for a weakling."

A part of me felt that he just said those words because he didn't really know how he would treat me nicely. I have known him all my life, and I must say I had already gone familiar with him. This time, he no longer meant everything he just said, and that gave me a different kind of warmth in my heart.

Calgary held me by my arms after everybody left to go back to the village. "You can do this. If you can enhance your ability, our District will be much safer and stronger."

"I hope so," I replied in a breathy way. "What if I just got lucky? What if I only found you because I'm familiar with my mate's scent?"

He flashed a small smile at me. "I don't think that's the only reason. You didn't sense me when you were training by the falls before because you weren't really paying attention to your senses."

Both of my brows raised. "That was you?"

Calgary nodded. "Yeah. I took your anklet because Duke sensed how much of a burden it was for you and Auror to wear."

"Huh. So why were you bleeding that night?"

He anchored his arm on my shoulders as we began walking back to the village. "I helped Lawrence and his men defend the border. After they left, I stayed in case someone else will sneak in. Some hunters came a few hours later but I managed to take them down. I was shot, but instead of walking straight home, Duke brought me to you. He probably sensed our bond and wanted to heal faster."

"Then why didn't you come forward and introduced yourself?"

"Felicity came. I never really trusted her, so did Lawrence."

My brows almost met. "Then why did he keep Luna Felicity if he didn't trust her?"

Calgary sighed. "Because we have a feeling that it was Luna Felicity who ordered to kill your parents. Lawrence promised to make them all pay for murdering your mother, and the best way to keep watch to his suspect is to stay with her as close as possible..."
