KORA’S POV

Today is my 18th birthday, my big day. Today wasn’t just my birthday but the day I will be announced as the heiress of the Hamilton dynasty. I have worked tirelessly since I was 15 years old to be able to earn my spot smoothly. I passed with distinction, I helped out at the office and the list goes on. I powdered my face and smiled at my reflection in the mirror.

I picked up the family heirloom, a gold necklace that has been passed down for generations. I tried to put it on before it was snatched away from my hand.

“Kora, I will not let you wear this,” Lydia yelled at the top of her voice.

“Lydia, not today, please. It is my birthday.” Lydia rolled her eyes.

“You don’t deserve to wear this, after all, we don’t know who the family heiress will be.” I was never interested in being the heiress, her only problem in life was to get the latest outfits and bags. I stared at Lydia, I wanted to fight her and put her in her place but I knew better than to start a fight with mother’s favorite.

A few minutes later the servants came to inform us that the guests were arriving, our parents were already requesting we come downstairs so my birthday party could start. Lydia left with the heirloom before I could say anything. I added the finishing touches to my makeup and adjusted my floral dress.

The ballroom was filled to the brim. I saw some familiar and unfamiliar faces. But in all, I was happy because today is going to mark the beginning of a new journey. I can’t wait to be announced as the new heiress of the Hamilton dynasty. As I walked elegantly down the stairs people seemed to have their eyes on me.

I didn’t particularly think I was beautiful but I wasn’t unattractive either and I knew that because I had already started having marriage proposals from wealthy families, this luxurious lifestyle wasn’t for me but I knew I wanted to become the heiress. I have dreamed about this moment for as long as I can remember.

“Come little ones.” My father called out to Lydia and I. I boiled in anger as I saw the heirloom sitting on her neck. I wanted to protest about what she did earlier but I knew my complaints would go unheard because she was my favorite child. Anytime I tried to complain, I always got reminded of how delicate she was due to her health problems.

“Look at the beautiful necklace daddy.” Lydia showed him and he smiled widely. I felt like screaming and yanking it off her neck.

“It looks beautiful darling.”

“But dad-“

“That’s enough Kora.” I was cut short immediately, he knew exactly what I wanted to say. I nodded in agreement and Lydia hopped away happily.

“Dad, there are so many people here today. I only wanted a few guests.” I said as I walked side by side with my father.

“Well yes, but as you know today is a special day and we wanted the crowd to be as large as possible.” I sighed in exhaustion.

My father took a look at me before tapping on his glass cup to draw people’s attention. It was finally happening.

“First of all I would like to thank everyone for coming here today, I would also like to use this medium to wish, Kora a happy birthday.” I felt out of the world, my heart raced in excitement.

“Thanks, Dad,”

“And now, for the moment and announcement everyone in this room has been anticipating for so long. The heiress of the Hamilton dynasty is…” I closed my eyes and plastered a big smile on my face.

“Lydia.” I dropped and for a moment I thought it stopped beating. Lydia? Why her? I stood there staring in disbelief. As everyone congratulated her, I ran upstairs and shut my door.

“I was stripped off my right on my birthday.”
