"You threw me into the snow seven years ago, Alpha Black. Did you really think I came back to warm your bed?" Damien backed her against the mahogany desk, his hands gripping the table on either side of her hips as his breath came short and uneven. "Tell me the girl with silver eyes isn't mine, Celine. Look me in the eye and tell me you gave my bloodline to another man." Celine didn't flinch. She adjusted the lapel of her tailored blazer, her fingers grazing his chest just long enough to make his pulse race before she shoved him away. "My daughter belongs to me," she whispered, her lips curving into a cold smile. "And the only thing you get to do in this room, Damien... is beg." Seven years ago, Alpha CEO Damien Black publicly severed their fated bond and banished nineteen year old Celine over a betrayal she didn't commit. He didn't know she was carrying his unborn pup. Now, his territory sits on the brink of financial collapse, and Celine has returned—gorgeous, untouchable, and holding enough capital to buy his lands out from under him. She isn't alone, either. Flanked by a seductive Lycan king who wants to place a crown on her head and a lethal rogue enforcer who guards her bedroom door, Celine has every intention of watching Damien grovel for his pack’s survival. Damien will bleed, kneel, and tear his own dynasty apart to win her back. But as dangerous enemies close in and buried secrets threaten their daughter’s life, Damien realizes his hardest battle isn't saving his lands. It's making his rejected mate look at him with desire and trust again instead of vengeance before one of the men at her side takes her away forever.

Chapter 1 – The Alpha's Claim

~ Celine POV ~

"Step away from that desk, Celine," Damien said.

I didn't move an inch. I kept my palms flat over the fragile parchment spread across the oak counter. "This deed stays in the lower archives, Alpha. Pack regulation twelve."

"I wrote regulation twelve," he said, walking between the tall rows of steel shelving. "Hand it over."

"You signed it," I replied, looking right into his grey eyes. "The Council wrote it. As the archivist on duty tonight, I need a signed requisition slip before any ancestral territory map leaves this basement."

Damien stopped on the opposite side of the counter. He leaned forward, resting his hands on the table. At twenty-one, he was the youngest Alpha Shadow Ridge had ever known, and nobody in this territory dared question his authority. Warriors dropped their gaze when he walked into a room. Elders watched their tone around him.

I didn't lower my eyes, and I didn't back down.

"Are you really going to lecture me about paperwork right now?" he asked, his voice low and dismissive. "Ironclaw scouts crossed our eastern boundary stream twenty minutes ago. I need the 1842 boundary survey to prove they're trespassing before I order my border patrol to tear down their outpost."

"Then sign the ledger," I said, pointing at the open leather-bound book beside my brass desk lamp. "It takes five seconds. If the Council audits my inventory tomorrow morning and finds an original territory deed missing from the safe, they won't blame the Alpha. They'll strip my rank and throw me out of the pack house."

Damien tilted his head, studying my face as if I were an unexpected obstacle he hadn't planned for. "You honestly believe I'd let the Council punish my staff over a routine record retrieval?"

"I believe you don't even know my name exists until you need an old map," I answered bluntly. "Give me your signature, and the document is yours."

A sharp, humorless smirk touched his mouth. "You've got a lot of nerve for an unranked clerk."

"I'm an archivist," I said. "And you're wasting valuable time while the Ironclaw pack sets up camp on your stream."

"Give me the pen," he said.

I reached for the silver fountain pen resting on the black marble stand near the ledger.

Damien reached for it at the exact same second.

His knuckles brushed against the back of my fingers.

A violent shock of heat tore through my chest. The air vanished from my lungs in an instant. My wolf jolted awake beneath my ribs, howling with a fierce, sudden recognition that made every bone in my body vibrate.

Fated mates.

I ripped my hand back, knocking the silver pen across the blotter. I stumbled backward two steps until my back hit the cold edge of a metal filing cabinet. "No."

Damien froze where he stood.

He didn't blink. His grey eyes darkened as his pupils expanded, swallowing the iris entirely. He looked down at his open fingers, flexing them once into a tight fist, then slowly lifted his head toward me. His nostrils flared as he drew in a sharp breath, catching my scent in the cool basement air.

"What was that?" he asked. The smooth, dismissive tone had vanished, replaced by a strained edge.

"Nothing," I lied, gripping the metal edges of the cabinet behind my back to stop my hands from shaking. "Static electricity from the carpet. Sign the paper and go."

"Don't play dumb with me, Celine." He moved around the counter, his strides deliberate and unhurried. "My wolf just tried to tear through my ribs to reach you."

"You're mistaken," I said, sliding sideways along the shelf to put distance between us. "It's past midnight. You're exhausted and stressed about the border."

Damien closed the gap before I could take another step. He planted one broad hand on the steel shelf beside my ear, trapping me in place. The heat radiating off him made the chilly archive air feel suffocating.

"Look at me," he commanded.

I kept my chin tucked down, staring at the silver buttons running down his dark jacket. "Alpha, please step back."

"I told you to look at me," he repeated, his voice dropping an octave.

I lifted my chin and met his gaze.

He clenched his jaw, his grey eyes searching my face with sharp intensity.

"Nineteen years old. An unranked orphan working in the basement of my records hall."

The blunt words stung, even if they were accurate. "If my status offends you so much, you're welcome to turn around and walk out."

"You think this is about status?" he asked, leaning down until his words grazed my temple. "The Moon Goddess just handed me an unranked archivist when I'm forty-eight hours away from signing a betrothal treaty with the Northern Alpha's daughter."

"Then ignore it," I said, pressing my back flat against the steel shelves. "Pretend it didn't happen. Go upstairs, sign the contract with Lady Veronica, and secure your northern border."

Damien let out a harsh, dry laugh that lacked any warmth. "You think an Alpha can just ignore his mate?"

"I think you're practical enough to do whatever protects your pack," I replied, forcing my voice to remain steady. "The elders want a union with the North. They'll never accept me as your Luna. You know the pack laws better than anyone."

He reached out, his fingers catching my chin in a firm hold. He didn't squeeze, but his grip left no room for me to pull away.

The spark leaped between our skin again, sending a sharp tremor down my spine.

"You don't get to tell me what I will or won't accept," he said, his eyes locked onto mine. "And you certainly don't tell me to go marry another woman."

"Damien—" I said.

"Say that again," he interrupted, his thumb brushing lightly across the curve of my lower lip.

I froze. "What?"

"My name," he murmured. "You've called me Alpha since the second I walked down those stairs."

"You are the Alpha," I whispered, trying to ignore how fast my pulse was hammering beneath his touch.

"To the rest of the pack," he said. "Not to you."

I swallowed hard and pulled my face away from his hand. "This is dangerous, Damien. If Elder Vance finds out about this—"

"Elder Vance answers to me," Damien snapped.

"For now," I countered, crossing my arms over my chest to build a wall between us. "Until you break your arranged betrothal and give him an excuse to challenge your leadership. You took the Alpha seat six months ago after your father died. You don't have the political allies to survive a civil challenge from the high families."

Damien took half a step back, folding his arms. He studied me with a flicker of genuine surprise breaking through his hard expression. "You read the Council minutes."

"I catalog them," I told him. "I know which elders hold territory debts. I know the North controls thirty percent of our grain supply through the winter passes. You can't afford to make enemies of them."

"I can afford whatever price I choose to pay," he said. "I didn't ask for a mate tonight, Celine. But I have one now. And I don't surrender what belongs to me."

"I don't belong to you," I shot back, stepping forward. "We touched a pen. That doesn't make me your property."

Damien leaned in until his shadow fell over me. "It makes you my mate. And if you think I'm going to let you hide down here in the dark while I pretend to court some northern heiress, you're out of your mind."

"What's your plan, then?" I asked, looking up at him. "Walk into the Council chamber tomorrow morning and announce that you're ditching the northern army for the girl who files property taxes?"

"If that's what it takes," he said without flinching.

"They'll ruin you," I whispered. "And they'll execute me for treason. They'll claim I used dark magic to seduce the Alpha."

His expression darkened with fury. He reached out and grabbed my wrist, pulling me away from the shelves until I stumbled against his chest. His grip was warm and unyielding.

"Nobody touches you," he said, every word sharp and deliberate. "Nobody threatens you. Not Vance, not the Council, and not the entire Northern Coalition. Do you understand me?"

"You're twenty-one, Damien," I said, looking up into his stubborn eyes. "You think you're invincible. You aren't."

"I don't care about being invincible," he replied, his voice dropping into a rough whisper. "I care about keeping what's mine."

He didn't wait for me to argue. He slid his hand to the back of my neck, tangled his fingers in my hair, and pulled my mouth to his.

The kiss wasn't gentle. It was demanding, fierce, and full of all the arrogance he carried as Alpha. But beneath the anger, a desperate hunger flared between us, pulling me in until my fingers gripped the lapels of his jacket. My wolf surged forward, answering his claim with an aching need that destroyed every logical thought in my head.

I kissed him back. I parted my lips, tasting him, letting the forbidden heat between us chase away the cold air of the basement.

When he finally broke the kiss, we were both breathing hard. He rested his forehead against mine, his thumb stroking the sensitive skin beneath my ear where his mark would go.

"Tomorrow night," he murmured against my lips, his warm breath fanning across my skin. "My private villa in the southern woods. Outside the pack perimeter."

"Damien, no," I breathed, shaking my head. "We can't do this."

"You're coming," he said, leaving no room for argument. "We're going to figure this out together. But you're done hiding from me."

Before I could answer, a loud metallic thud echoed from the top of the iron stairs.

Footsteps began descending into the basement.

"Alpha Damien?" Elder Vance's voice echoed through the stairwell, sharp and demanding. "The border scouts are waiting at the eastern gate. Did you locate the 1842 deed or not?"

Damien didn't panic. He moved fast, grabbing the disputed parchment off the counter with one hand while stepping smoothly between me and the doorway.

He adjusted his jacket, his cold Alpha mask returning in an instant.

He looked back at me over his shoulder, his grey eyes burning with an unspoken promise.

"Sign the ledger tomorrow, archivist," he said, loud enough for the old man to hear.

Then he turned toward the doorway just as Elder Vance stepped into the room.

"I have the map, Vance," Damien said coldly, brushing past the elder without breaking stride. "Deploy the enforcers."

Elder Vance didn't follow immediately. He stopped at the desk, his suspicious gaze scanning the disheveled papers, the knocked-over pen, and my flushed face.

"Is there a problem down here, Brooks?" Vance asked, his eyes narrowing.

I forced a calm breath and picked up the fallen pen. "No, Elder. The Alpha just collected his records."

Vance lingered for three long seconds before turning toward the stairs. "Make sure you lock the vault when you leave tonight."

I stood frozen in the silence against the desk, clutching the silver pen as the iron door clanged shut at the top of the stairs, my lips still burning from Damien's kiss.
