Chapter 2

The moment the royal emissary finished speaking, a dead silence descended upon the hall. Everyone had gone pale with fright and was holding their breaths fearfully.

Dad was about to say something more, but the royal emissary had already turned to leave. Outside the window was a sea of black—the royal guards of the Alpha King.

This time, there really was no escape for us!

Some people started to cry softly as despair loomed heavy over everyone's heads.

Sweat beaded Dad's forehead, and his voice had even changed pitch due to his overwhelming anxiety. "Just who exactly is the Alpha King's fated mate? If we still fail to find her within the hour, we're all going to die!"

Just as everyone was thinking desperately of a plan, Jenna suddenly exclaimed, "Dad, I just remembered something! The night the Alpha King stayed at our house, I think I saw him heading in the direction of Annabelle's room!"

That piece of information had everyone stunned.

Dad's head whipped around as he questioned, "Annabelle?"

"Yes!" The words tumbled from Jenna's lips with increasing speed. "Maybe…we should ask her? She might know something!"

As though they were clutching at their last lifeline, Dad immediately rushed toward my room with the other members of the family.

When they entered, I was lying limply in bed, looking frail and weak.

Dad practically lunged toward my bedside before he asked anxiously, "Annabelle, did the Alpha King come to your room when he was here to inspect our territory?"

I nodded. "He did."

Hearing that, Dad was so agitated that his whole body was vibrating. He pressed, "Why did he seek you out? What did he say? Hurry up and tell us, as this involves the lives of everyone in the pack!"

I thought back to that night, then raised my eyes to look at him. In an extremely calm voice, I replied, "He said he specifically came to our pack this time for me."

The instant I said that, everyone's eyes bulged out of their heads in shock, and they looked at me as though I had gone crazy.

Malia was the first to shriek, "For you? How could that be possible! You're a useless piece of trash who doesn't even have a wolf spirit, so how could you possibly know the Alpha King?"

I coughed gently, but that was still enough for blood to rise up my throat. I said emotionlessly, "I do know him, and the reason why I don't have a wolf spirit is also because of him."

As everyone watched in shock and disbelief, I slowly recounted how I met Jayden, the Alpha King.
