Anne’s POV

The note remained in my hand long after I had memorized every word.

Ask who changed the orders before Silvermoon fell.

Someone knew the truth about the massacre. Someone knew the original report might no longer be safe. And whoever had slipped the message beneath my door knew I was investigating.

I folded the paper and hid it inside the lining of my dress.

Then I looked toward the door.

Caelan had forbidden me from entering his private study. Naturally, that was exactly where I neede

  • The Alpha Who Killed My Mate    Chapter 11 – The Night His Father Died

Anne’s POVThe photograph felt heavier than it should have.I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at the two people standing in front of the old stone structure. My mother. And Theron Blackthorn. The man who had raised the Alpha King.I turned the photograph over again, hoping there might be something I had missed. The date was still there, written in faded ink. Twenty-three years ago.My mother had been standing beside a man from the family that would eventually destroy ours. Why?And why had she never mentioned him?A knock interrupted my thoughts.I quickly slipped the photograph beneath my pillow."Come in."Lydia entered carrying a tray of food. She placed it on the small table near the window, then glanced at my face."You haven't eaten.""I'm not hungry.""You haven't been hungry since yesterday.""Perhaps I'm tired of eating in a place where I can't even open a door without someone watching me."Lydia lowered her eyes.I regretted taking my frustration out on her. She hadn't ch

Anne’s POVCaelan crouched in front of him.“Who gave you the orders?”The man spat blood onto the floor.“You still think this is about orders?”Caelan grabbed the front of his uniform.“Answer me.”The man's smile widened.“Your father warned you. Didn't he? He knew what would happen if the third bell rang.”My fingers tightened around my pendant. The third bell. The symbol. My mother's warning. They were all connected.“What does the third bell mean?” I demanded. The man turned his attention toward me.For a moment, his expression changed. Something resembling recognition crossed his face.“So the daughter inherited the key.”Caelan immediately stood between us.“Don't look at her.”The man chuckled.“You can't protect her from what is coming.”Caelan's eyes darkened.“Who sent you?”The man opened his mouth, but before he could speak, his body jerked violently.A strange sound escaped his throat. One of the warriors rushed forward.“Your Majesty!”The prisoner collapsed.Caelan st

  • The Alpha Who Killed My Mate    Chapter 9 — The Trap at the Eastern Watchtower

Anne’s POVI read the note for the fifth time. The person who changed the orders will be at the eastern watchtower tomorrow night. Come alone. It was either the opportunity I had been waiting for or the most obvious trap anyone had ever set.I folded the paper and slipped it beneath my pillow.I couldn't tell Caelan. He would lock me inside my room, double the guards, and probably destroy whatever chance I had of finding the person responsible for my family's deaths. But going alone was dangerous.I knew that.Unfortunately, danger had never stopped anyone from destroying my life. The following morning, I barely touched my breakfast. My thoughts kept returning to the note, the missing page, and the report bearing Darius Voss's signature.Someone had changed the orders before Silvermoon fell.I needed to know who.A knock interrupted my thoughts.“Come in.”Lydia entered carrying a tray of fresh clothes.“Good morning, my lady.”“Good morning.”She placed the tray on the bed but didn't

And whoever had slipped the message beneath my door knew I was investigating.I folded the paper and hid it inside the lining of my dress. Then I looked toward the door.Caelan had forbidden me from entering his private study. Naturally, that was exactly where I needed to go.I waited until the mansion grew quieter before leaving my room. Two guards stood near the staircase, but neither stopped me as I walked toward the western corridor. The problem was not reaching the study. It was getting inside.Caelan had told me the original report was secured there. If he was telling the truth, the document might reveal who had framed my father. If he was lying, I needed to discover what he was hiding instead.Either way, I wasn't going to sit quietly and wait for him

  • The Alpha Who Killed My Mate    Chapter 7 — The Woman Who Wanted My Place

Anne’s POVThe fear in Caelan’s eyes lasted only a second. Then it disappeared.“Give it to me.”I closed my fingers around the metal piece. “No.”“Anne.”“You murdered my family, dragged me into your territory, and declared me your Luna without my consent. If you want this, give me a reason to trust you.”His jaw tightened.“Trust is a luxury you cannot afford here.”“Neither can you, apparently. You look terrified of a little piece of metal.”His gaze shifted toward the corridor behind me.“We're leaving.”“I'm not going anywhere until you explain what the third bell means.”“Not here.”“Then where?”“Somewhere the people hunting that pendant can't reach you.”I hated the fact that his warning made sense.Someone had followed me into the sealed eastern wing. Someone had threatened me. And Caelan, the man responsible for destroying my family, recognized the symbol my mother had hidden. Before I could question him again, a guard hurried toward us.“Your Majesty, Lady Clara Voss has ar

  • The Alpha Who Killed My Mate    Chapter 6: The Secret Inside Mother's Pendant

Anne's POVThe threat should have frightened me.Instead, it made one thing clear.Someone in Blackthorn knew I was getting close to the truth.I folded the anonymous note and hid it inside my mattress. Then I returned to the window, watching Darius Voss until he disappeared into the mansion. My mother's warning echoed in my mind.If Caelan takes you, find the traitor within. She hadn't written that message without a reason. She had known something about Blackthorn, perhaps even something about Caelan himself. But why hadn't she told me before the wedding?I looked down at the silver pendant in my palm. The crescent moon was worn smooth from years of handling, and its tiny compartment was almost impossible to notice unless someone knew where to look.I pressed the hidden latch again.Nothing happened.I tried pushing it from the opposite side. Still nothing.Frustrated, I examined the pendant more carefully. A thin line ran around the crescent's edge, separating its front from its bac
