XXIX. The silver wolf

I follow the scent of peaches that Vladimir leaves behind in the forest. It doesn't take me long to track him down and find him.

He sits on a large rock in front of the lake, hunched over, his elbows resting on his thighs, his back at me. I assume he is watching the lake.

I stay there, watching him for a few moments. I don't even know what to say to him.

“Have you come to enjoy my failure?” he suddenly speaks, taking me by surprise.

I walk up to him.

“Can I sit next to you?” I ask.

He shrugs and moves a little. I sit next to him, watching the lake. For a long while, no one speaks.

I am the first to break the silence.

“What happened?” I ask.

“I don’t want to talk about it.”

I can tell he is upset, but I insist.
