I watched the omega in front of me. The sun had set into the evening, and the palace was quiet. The room was dimly lit with only the bedside lamps. The omega was on the floor, his eyes half closed, his lips parted. He was fully aroused and completely unable to speak for himself. The half empty cup of tea that had been meant for me sat on the floor next to him. The door opened slowly, tentatively. I waited as it opened and gently closed before I turned on the lights fully. Sylvia froze close to the door, her lips parting. She looked down at the servant, then at me, and disappointment immediately flashed through her eyes. I looked down at her. She was wearing next to nothing, and the tiny robe she had on left nothing to the imagination. "Why? You look disappointed, my lady. Did the tea go to the wrong person?" She swallowed hard. "Alpha, I..." "How fucking dare you, Sylvia?" My voice was low. It never went high anymore. Not after Selena. "What? You think I will end up like him? Waiting for your hands to rid me of the aphrodisiac you slipped in my blood? You think even if I was unconscious, I would want to fuck you?" "You married me!" She yelled, her body shaking, her eyes meeting mine. "Five years. The pack is making a mockery of me. I haven't given birth. I haven't even been touched by the man who openly claimed me." "Claimed you?" I asked, covering the distance, till she had to look up to meet her eyes. Good. It was the dynamic that her father had imposed on me five years ago. "The man who claimed you was your father. I never even married you. I announced you as my mate's cheap replacement and you took that and you ran with it. Maybe go run to daddy once more. Go tell him to use his power to get me hard and ready for you." She raised her hand and slapped me hard, her chest heaving. "I am beautiful! I have a nice body. I am every man's dream! I gave you the security this pack now has. How dare you?" I stepped closer. "Tell that to yourself till someone believes it. You will be banned from anything that comes to me from now on. This is your fifth attempt at drugging me, and if it happens a sixth, Sylvia, I will ruin you. I ruined the woman I loved. You are next to nothing." I grabbed my shirt and walked away, abandoning my room for the study once more. The study was dim, and I leaned on the door for a moment to catch my breath. I turned, towards the smaller door. Before I could stop myself, I pushed myself away from the door and locked it, then walked slowly towards the door. The knob gave way under my hand, and the lights automatically came on. Those pictures still hung on the walls. Still stared back at me and demanded my heart like the woman in them had not so brutally killed my beta and betrayed me. I looked down at the rose sitting on the table. It was the last rose from Beta Ian's burial, still alive, kept entirely so because I fed it my blood and my hatred. My fists clenched tight, my eyes closing. Selena. Damn you. I walked out of the room and locked it, not because anyone ever went there, but because I needed to see the lock to stop myself from reaching in there again. She was a drug. A drug I hated with everything in me. A knock came on the door. "Alpha. It is Beta Sean. I have some urgent news." I rolled my eyes and slipped on the shirt I had grabbed, before opening the door. Beta Sean walked in, and I went back to the chair, my hands resting on the desk. "I hope you aren't reporting to me this late because of the full moon ball?" "No, Alpha," he said. Even the high pitch of his voice annoyed me. Beta Ian's voice had been deeper. "Something had happened at the pack borders. A group of unidentified rogues attacked the soldiers guarding the east border. Two are fatally injured, and one ended up dead." I raised a brow. Another death that I couldn't feel. "When did this happen?" "Around thirty minutes ago. According to reports from the others, the group came too close and the three casualties had told them to back off without escalating. They became aggressive and started to fight. I have sent a few to crack down on the location of the rogues, as they ran off the minute the soldier dropped dead." "Fucking rogues," I said, my chest heaving. "Locate them tonight itself, or none of you are allowed to come back. Once you have their locations..." I closed my eyes. "Wait till the full moon. There is little to no chance that there will be any sort of disturbance then. Wipe them out before they become an actual threat." He nodded. "Yes, Alpha. Do we arrest them or..." "Do you fucking have to ask me that too? How do you treat someone who attacked your pack? Did you even go through any sort of training before you were appointed beta?" He took a step back and gave a small bow. "I apologize. We will cripple their army and arrest the rest. I am sorry." "Leave." He turned away and all but ran out of the study, the door closing behind him again. I hated being this man. This angry, tired man who wished for Selena in his bed as much as he wished for her in a grave. The man who saw that young beta, and only saw a sad excuse for beta Ian. I leaned back on my seat, my chest heaving hard. I hated it. But I couldn't stop. My eyes fell back on the door again, and despite not going in there, I could see everything. Her smile. Her tiny tattoo. The scar. I closed my eyes. Damn you. Damn you. Let me fucking go. But I might be the one still holding on.SELENA'S P.O.V"How is Gabriel doing?" I asked as I took a seat. They had made the best of what they would with the space, and it looked almost like a home."Oh, he is absolutely perfect. He has asked about you all the times I have been to the reforms, which is a little too much considering he has been there less than a month."I nodded, then looked at Amanda who was now sitting on my lap, her smile big."I missed you so much," I whispered, gently caressing her face. "If I had known you were here, I would have come sooner."She gave a small smile, then shrugged in that way that always reminded me of her father. "Aunt Sarah fed me a lot of sweets, but I missed you too."I broke into a laugh. "You betrayer. So you were happy I wouldn't enforce portion control?"She giggled, and I pulled her to my chest, my fingers combing through her hair.I looked up. Alan was sitting across from us, his eyes thin, his lips set in a straight hard line of displeasure.I cleared my throat. "How have you
ALPHA COLE'S P.O.VThe car came to a slow stop, and I turned, my eyes narrow. The last time I was here, I had just lost everything, and I came out with nothing more than the tattoo on my back.I took in a deep breath as the car door opened, and I stepped out, then walked into the large compound. The compound belonged to the priestesses of the moon goddess, and the central house belonged to the seer."Alpha," said a few priestesses as they ran out to meet me.I turned, my brows raised. "Yes?"They greeted, their eyes darting to my shoes, before one of them stepped forward, her smile small."You are to remove your shoes, Alpha."I tilted my head upwards. "I refuse to."The girl's eyes widened, and she swallowed. "Alpha, these are holy grounds where the moon goddess herself is invoked and...""And what?" I asked, my voice as low as I could keep it. "I refuse to take off my shoes. Should I expect resistance from you?"She swallowed hard, and for a long minute, she looked like she was genu
SELENA'S P.O.V I walked back to the dignitary quarters in a daze, my chest feeling a little too tight for the emotions I was somehow managing to carry inside it.I closed the door behind me once I slipped into the room, and I gently leaned back on the door, my heart ripping open once again. I went to the floor, my knees pulled to my chest as I wrapped my hands around them, fresh tears welling up in my eyes. This felt even worse than missing him. I was able to go five years riding on hate and shutting away everything thay could have been good about us.But having him lie down on my chest and tell me about all of the things we could have done together, including having a daughter, and then having to go back to being enemies the next morning, it killed me inside. How do I start telling him that he had missed his daughter's birth? That he had missed that first cry? That he had missed her first walk and her first laugh and her first crawl and that the first time she said Dada she hadn't b
ALPHA COLE'S P.O.V I woke up to the steady, consistent feeling of soft, small hands pushing into my hair. I moved slowly. The body beneath me was warm, soft, and felt like everything I had been missing all my life.My body felt heavy. I can't remember the last time my body felt heavy from sleep. Well, yes, I could. I had never forgotten. I moved, my hands wrapping around her slim, slender waist. She was warm, mostly naked under me, but this comfort meant more to me than heat."You are awake."I swallowed hard, my eyes closing tighter. "Not yet."She gave a small laugh. "Trying to smuggle a few more minutes in?"I nodded. She adjusted, pulling up the sheets over me. It felt warm. I felt almost like the Cole I used to be. Like the man who could be carefree and didn't have to bother about the wrath of an entire council."You still look the same when you sleep," she said, her voice low and teasing. I should probably tell her that she can't do that. That we are not friends. That she hasn
SELENA'S P.O.V I swallowed hard, tears running down my cheeks steadily. "Cole..." I said as I tried to reach out to him, my heart thumping hard in my chest. He had my name on his spine. My name on his skin like... like I meant more than that one night. He immediately pulled up the robe and moved away before I could touch him. He stood and turned to me. His eyes were glassy with tears, but he was fighting so hard that his jaw clenched. "Cole," I said, immediately getting out of bed too. I covered the distance to him, my eyes darting across his face. "Talk to me. Please.""About what?" He asked, meeting my eyes. "What am I going to tell you that isn't going to make me seem like a pathetic fool right now who is going against everything he believes in?""Why is that a bad thing?" I asked, my chest rising and falling rapidly, my breaths short. "You wanted to know if I could walk over everything that I believed in in order to get to you. Why can't you do the same for me?""Because it got
SELENA'S P.O.V. I waited on the edge of the bed as Alpha Cole got out of the bath. He hadn't objected when I had decided to give him a bit of privacy. My heart skipped a beat as the bathroom door opened, and he stepped out.He looked a little less gaunt, his eyes meeting mine across the space.I gave him a smile. "I forgot water. Is there..."He pointed to the bar, and there was a smaller fridge right under the bar. I grabbed him a bottle, then walked back. To my relief, he was sitting next to the food now, the robe he was wearing open at the front, with only a pair of slacks covering his waist and below."You should eat. I tried my best."I opened the food, then stepped back, sitting on the opposite edge of the bed. "You?" He asked, his voice low.I gave a small smile. "I will grab dinner after you...""No," he said simply. "Go change your dress. There is a robe over there. I am sure you know that."Of course I did.I stood up and grabbed the robe. He did not offer to move or close
SELENA'S P.O.VMy heart dropped straight to my feet as the seer finished talking. These women... these are Isaac's own appointed women. Isaac was trying to discard his own daughter as Luna and then appointed a breeder who Alpha Cole would have no choice but to make pregnant. Once one of Isaac's app
