The second half started rougher than before. The opposing team must’ve realized I was their biggest problem, because every time I moved, two of them were suddenly there, blocking my path.

Zack skated up beside me during a break. “They’re gunning for you,” he said, breathing hard.

“Yeah, I noticed,” I muttered, glancing toward the tall player with the number 9 on his back. He’d been watching me all game, eyes narrowed like he could sense I was different.

Coach yelled from the sideline, “Maya! Don’t overthink it! Play smart!”

“Got it!” I shouted back, though my heart was racing.

The whistle blew again. I pushed forward, the ice hissing beneath my skates. Number 9 charged toward me at full speed, his shoulder aimed for a hit. I dodged easily—too easily. My movements felt almost… enhanced, like something deep inside was helping me predict every play before it happened.
