View More"Come on, we're going to be late!" I screamed excitedly as I struggled to put on my shoes.
I was excited about the party we had planned for so long!
"I'm going to leave you, Riley!" I said scowling dramatically.
I bite my lip as I look at my reflection in the mirror.
I look so good…tonight is going to be so fun and memorable.
As Riley made her way down the staircase, a string of expletives flowed out from her lips, leaving me intrigued about her current state of mind.
"Ugh, oh my gosh" Riley exclaimed as she continued down the stairs toward me
The tone of her voice and the words she used conveyed a sense of frustration, anger, or perhaps disappointment. It was clear that something was bothering her, and I couldn't help but wonder what it was.
"What's wrong?" I asked a little skeptical about the interaction.
What is going on with her now?
As she walked away, a sense of helplessness washed over me. I couldn't shake off the feeling that something was bothering her deeply, but I didn't know how to help.
"I'm just worried that I won't find my mate and tonight will be a total disaster," said Riley worriedly.
"You don't have to think about it too much. Just have fun and everything will be fine" I said to her assuringly.
As I walked down the street with her, I couldn't shake off the feeling that something was off.
It was like a nagging sensation that kept tugging at the back of my mind. I tried to brush it off and distract myself by talking to her, but I could tell she was feeling the same way.
We both had a sense of unease but neither of us dared to say anything. It was as if we were afraid to give a voice to our fears as if acknowledging them would make them real.
"Okay, can you tell me who you find attractive today?" she asked, looking at me curiously, scanning me from head to toe.
"I honestly don't know, but I'm open to being pleasantly surprised," I replied, giving her a sideways glance of my own.
My mind was trying to tell me something but soon we were at the party.
We were having our annual claiming ceremony where young wolves who had just come of age and other pack members gathered to celebrate.
The atmosphere was electric with excitement and anticipation as we waited for the new members of our pack to be officially recognized.
The scent of fresh pine and crackling firewood wafted through the air, as we sat around the bonfire. As the sun slowly set over the horizon, casting a warm orange glow across the sky, the elders of our pack began to speak.
They regaled us with stories of past claiming ceremonies, sharing the wisdom and knowledge that had been passed down through generations.
I had undoubtedly been looking forward to meeting my mate for so long.
Most of the pack members had already been there so finding a place to enjoy the festivities wasn't really a problem but my mind was everywhere at the moment.
Riley had already set her eyes on an unfortunate target to spend her evening with.
I chuckled softly as she began walking towards the drinks section where her eyes were following.
“Come find me when the main part of the ceremony begins,” she said as she winked at me and sashayed away.
I scoffed wide-eyed at her. “We just got here!” I said to her back, gesturing wildly.
I shake my head and proceed to look around.
As I stood at that corner, I couldn't help but feel a sense of nostalgia wash over me. The faces of people I grew up with flashed before my eyes, some of them I still talk to, while others have faded into the background of my life.
I was always something of a loner, content with my own company and the company of my thoughts. But my only friend back then was Riley, she was always outgoing and knew everyone.
I remember wandering around the neighborhood with her, exploring every nook and cranny, and meeting new people along the way.
It was a different time back then when the world felt smaller and more intimate. Now, as I stood at that corner, I couldn't help but feel a twinge of sadness for the times that have passed.
But as I watched the people go about their day, I felt a sense of contentment settle over me. It was comforting to see that life goes on, and that people continue to live and thrive, even if we've lost touch with each other.
For a moment, I felt like I was a part of something larger than myself, a small but integral part of a community that continues to grow and change.
Suddenly, I felt a strange sensation from my head to my chest and then I started looking around frantically.
Despite scanning the room meticulously, I failed to identify any apparent reason for the sudden discomfort that had settled in my chest. My frustration began to mount as I continued to search for a clue but to no avail.
I started to huff in exasperation, feeling increasingly helpless and clueless. Just as I was about to give up my search, my eyes fell on a person in the gathering who I never thought I would ever look into.
The intensity of my gaze surprised even myself, as I felt strangely drawn to this person, almost as if I had been waiting for this moment for a long time.
Then he mouthed the one thing that confused and startled me even further.
“Mate”.
“Let's get out of here” Riley said as she practically dragged me out of the room. I could not make myself walk faster than the pace I was going. I was completely and utterly stunned, what could've possibly made him react that way? Did I do something to him? “Why would he say that?” I whispered to myself as I was being dragged out. “Because he and every other person in this pack have officially lost their minds” she exclaimed walking furiously away from the pack house. I shake my head in confusion, “Wait what?! What the hell Riley?!” I asked, frustrated. She stopped mid stride, whipping around to face me and she shot me a frustrated look. “What is wrong with you?! Can't you see what's going on? You're in fucking danger here. We have to go!” She said, her eyes bulging from its sockets. I looked back at the pack house in dismay. This might not be the ideal time to grill her about what she knows but I will. So to ease her stress, I nodded my head slowly, letting her pull me away f
I looked at Riley in surprise, things had started to get scary in familiar territory and I wasn't feeling really safe anymore.I remembered what Riley told me just this morning about the weird things going on in the pack.“We just want to see Alpha Christian, there's no need to throw names at her,” Riley said to the guard. She was very irritated at the behavior but was restraining herself, so was I to be very honest.A lot had changed since we had gotten captured by Derek and his men. The time away had caused the pack’s mentality to change. Most of them at least, I hoped that a few still had their common sense amongst them.“This is absurd. I'm a proud member of this pack!” I exclaimed in defiance when he stubbornly stood in our way.He scoffed, “You're really testing my patience right now, do as I say and turn around before I do something nasty” he growled.I flinched back in disgust, his face had turned ugly. Any single ounce of patience I had left evaporated at the sight of it.“We
“What?” I all but yelled at her. Several people turned to look at me with judgement on their faces but I didn't really care.Riley tried to shush me but I wasn't having it right now.“Please tell me you're joking” I said pleadingly.Even as I said it, I knew it wasn't a joke. This was really happening before my very eyes.“I'm not joking. I don't know what the reason is but he refused to tell anyone you're his mate” she said, whispering the last part.I stayed silent, I knew exactly why he hadn't said anything to anyone. But now it was putting us into trouble.“Why would they give him that kind of ultimatum though? What is going on?” I asked incredulously.I shook my head wildly looking from left to right. Something wasn't right. First they made him a rogue, now he's back they're making him be with someone that is not his mate.“They said…. And it's very ridiculous…if he hasn't found a mate, he has to choose someone and make them Luna” she said exasperated.I was stunned, I tried to t
“No, that's nonsense!” I said, my eyes flashing with anger. What in the hell did she mean by punishing? And I wasn't born from a human. This was definitely nonsense.“They're wrong” I shouted, turning back to walk back towards my house.I wasn't hearing any of this nonsense anymore, but she stopped me.“Hey! Don't just storm out, I– I am just trying to help you, don't go” she said forcing me to halt in my tracks.I sighed heavily, she was right. I didn't mean to be rude to her, it just came out of nowhere. It hurt me deeply to hear that about my dad. They were wrong. They had to be wrong. If they were right then why wouldn't he tell me?“Look” she said, trying to steer me to a tree where we could sit for a while.“We can't know for sure if these rumors are true or false,” she said, shaking her head at me.“I'm sorry I shouted at you” I said solemnly, looking down at my feet.I heard her chuckling, but she didn't say anything immediately.“Why don't you just ask him? It's time you knew
My father had tried to distract me throughout our meal, bringing up conversation after conversation of what happened during the time we were hiding.I had entertained him up until I noticed he was finding it hard to breathe as he talked. This bothered me a lot. I wanted to know how serious his health issues are.I wanted to know why he was also keeping it from me, it's not like I wouldn't find out eventually.I didn't know how to go about the conversation and it was beginning to feel like a burden on my chest.“Dad,” I said suddenly, cutting him off as he spoke. He looked at me sharply, probably noticing the change in my countenance.“Are you going to tell me what's wrong with me? Do I have to beg? Tell me, please. I'm sure I can help” I said pleadingly. He looked at me with eyes filled with sorrow. His lips quivering a bit as he continued staring at me.But just like that the look was gone and he was back to his cheery self.“You don't worry about this old man. I will be good before
I ran towards him hurriedly, almost tripping on myself in the process. The minute I came in contact with him I felt tears that had been bottled up for the longest time spill out immediately.I missed him so much, just the thought that I wasn't going to be stuck in some house or cellar for the longest time gave me cause to squeeze him even more.“Oh dad” I said, crying on his shoulder like a pup that had been ripped from his mother's breasts.“My baby. Oh Celeste. I thought I had lost you forever” he said, gently patting my back over and over again.Fresh tears threatened to pour out at the sound of that but I maintained my cool. Coughing, I let go of him slightly and just looked at him.He seemed to have aged a lot since the last time I saw him. His weight had greatly reduced and he had worry lines on his face.I frowned, taking in his composure and stance to detect any signs of illness or maybe it was just fatigued.“Dad?...” I began to say but he waved me off and just took my hand.
