PENIEL
“No… not Peniel, not my baby,” Mom sobbed, collapsing to the floor, her arms wrapped around Dad’s legs like her life depends on it.
His face twisted with rage, and without mercy, he kicked her in the ribs.
“Mom!” I cried, frozen behind the bedroom window, my voice cracking with fear.
“Shut up!” he roared, kicking her again.
Mom jerked from the blow, but didn’t scream, she was swallowing the pain.
“You useless woman! You think you can stop me, Nadia? You can’t! I swear, I’ll drag that foolish daughter of yours to the Alpha myself!” he shouted, his voice echoing through the house.
Mom coughed, blood spilling from her lips. Her body trembled, but her eyes held determination.
Slowly, she painfully lifted her head. Her face was pale, streaked with tears and blood, and i gasped covering my mouth as I watched her helplessly.
“To keep your title as the most powerful Alpha of our time, you sold your own child as a treaty to a ruthless Alpha? How evil can you be? You monster!” Mom screamed, her voice trembling with fury.
And immediately, a thunderous slap landed on her face. But he wasn’t done, he grabbed her by the neck, lifting her off the ground, choking her. Still, she didn’t back down.
“I… I’d rather die than watch you do this to my daughter,” she gasped, her voice barely audible, her eyes flickering.
Tears blurred my vision, but I couldn’t just stand there anymore. I ran inside, my heart pounding against my ribcage. This wasn’t the first time I’d seen Mom like this, but I’d never get used to it.
“Mom,” I whispered, tears streaming down my cheeks.
She looked at me, her eyes pleading, her trembling hand weakly waving me away. She wanted me to leave, but I couldn’t.
I wouldn’t.
I turned to face the man who didn’t care if she lived or died.
“Dad, please stop! You’re hurting her!” I cried, desperation in my voice. But he didn’t even glance at me.
I wanted to fight him, scream at him, make him feel the pain he’d caused us all these years. But I knew better. He wasn’t just my father, he was the Alpha. The one no one dared challenge.
“Alpha Henry Diego!” I shouted, and he froze.
He froze, with my mom’s body dangling in the air, his hands clasped tightly around her fragile and battered body.
“What did you just call me?” he snapped, his eyes narrowing.
I didn’t answer. Instead, I whispered, “I’ll do it.”
“You’ll do what?” he growled, stepping closer.
I took a shaky breath, trying not to fall apart in front of him.
He was my father by blood, but never for once has he even been a father to me, or a husband to my mom. He was a tyrant I wanted nothing to do with. And the worst part? Everyone in the pack admired me, looked up to me without knowing how often I wished I could trade places with them. Just to have a normal life. A real family.
“I agree,” I said through clenched teeth. “I’ll be your treaty to Alpha Luciano.”
“No… baby, no…” Mom’s cries filled the room as he flung her against the wall, and he stormed towards me, while moved backwards fearfully, until my back was touching the wall.
“You’re not just a treaty, sweetheart,” he sneered. “You’ll be whatever he wants. His maid. His toy. His bedmate.” My heart stopped, and I stared at him, horrified.
“I-I can’t… No…”
He laughed coldly, reaching out to touch a strand of my hair. I could feel his burning hatred digging deep into my soul. How could a father hate his own child?
“You think you have a choice?” he hissed. “Even your mother doesn’t. She’s just collateral damage. Your bags are packed. The driver’s on his way. And when he gets here… you’re gone.”
I shook my head, tears falling freely now. But deep down, I knew, this nightmare was only beginning.
“Think carefully, dearest… or your mother,” he said coldly, pointing at her limp body on the floor.
“N…no, don’t hurt her,” I said fearfully and he smirked,
“Good girl,” he said, patting my shoulder like I was some obedient pet.
Then he smirked. “Make sure you catch his eye. Alpha Luciano isn’t easy to impress, but no man can resist a beautiful woman’s body.”
I felt sick, disgusted at his shamelessness.
“Alpha Henry,” I called, using his title instead of “Dad.” He stopped.
“Promise me she’ll be okay,” I said quietly, barely holding myself together.
“She will… depending on your performance. Now go. Your ride is here,” he said, motioning toward the window.
I looked out and saw the maid loading my luggage into the car.
I sighed and I turned to leave, but he called out again. “Dear… make me proud.”
I wanted to spit in his face, cursed the day I became his daughter, Instead, I walked away, knowing I had no power against him.
I got downstairs and I walked to the car that was waiting for me, the driver opened the car door. I climbed in, and he drove off.
I stared at the house until it disappeared from view. My heart felt heavy as I couldn’t stop thinking about my Mom. How would she survive with that monster? Would I ever see her again?
The questions haunted me the entire ride.
When we arrived, I stepped out and looked around. The mansion was massive, far grander than my father’s. Every inch screamed wealth and power.
No wonder he sold me off. He couldn’t defeat Alpha Luciano like he had with other packs, so he offered me instead.
A treaty to boost his image. And now… I belonged to someone else.
“This way, ma’am,” the driver said, leading me into the towering mansion.
As I stepped inside, my eyes widened. Nearly twenty young women stood scattered across the grand hall. I lingered at the back, wondering if they too had been sold off by their fathers like I had, and a small part of me felt relief that I wasn’t alone.
Then, a movement caught my eye.
A man began descending the staircase, draped in a long black robe. Beside him was a woman in a red floral gown. Their faces were hidden weren’t visible at first, but something about the way he walked demanded attention and I couldn’t look away.
As he stepped into the light, his face came into view, he was manly and tall, broad-shouldered, with piercing blue eyes and dark curls that fell partly over his face. He looked almost unreal, like something carved from the moonlight. But beneath that beauty, I could feel the dark aura enemating from him.
And as I continued staring at him, my breath hitched as his blue eyes ran into mine. It was surprising that despite the crowd he noticed me. I shook slightly as it felt like there was a magnet pulling the both of us together.
Something I’d never felt before.
“Mate! Mate!” a voice echoed in my head, jubilating, while I stood frozen, stunned. This couldn’t be real.
But it was.
“Arghhh!” I screamed as sharp pain shot through my head and legs.
I collapsed to my knees, gasping. My eyes darted around until they landed on a guard standing close, gripping a whip.
“How dare you!” The guard shouted, his eyes burning with fury.
I blinked, confused. What had I done?
Then I saw it…everyone else was kneeling, heads bowed before Alpha Luciano. I’d been so lost in thought, I hadn’t noticed.
I closed my eyes, panic rising in my chest, I knew what this meant. My father wouldn’t forgive me if I messed this up.
“Please, Lord…” I whispered under my breath.
“You worthless girl! Take her to the dungeon!” the woman beside Alpha Luciano snapped. Her voice was cruel, like she enjoyed watching others suffer.
“No, please! I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to…” I tried to explain, but the guards didn’t care. They grabbed me roughly, dragging me across the floor.
Tears welled up in my eyes. I hadn’t even been here an hour, and I was already being punished. What would I tell my father? What about my mom? Would she be okay? I felt dizzy, overwhelmed by fear.
Then, a voice cut through the chaos.
“Stop. Take her to my room.” Immediately everyone went silent.
My heart skipped. “His room?” I repeated the words in my head, stunned.
Why? What did he mean by that?
HALEYI took a breath, closed my eyes and called to my wolf.It hurt because the change came slower for me. It always did.My bones ached as they cracked and reformed. My skin stretched and burned as fur pushed through. My face lengthened, my teeth sharpened. For a few seconds I was neither human nor wolf, just pain and change.I felt myself drop to the ground, my spine curving, my senses sharpening. Then it was over. When I opened my eyes, I stood comfortably on four legs and the world looked different. Brighter. More detailed. I could smell everything. The trees. The grass. The dirt.I shook out my fur, getting used to the feel of it again. It had been a while.Rhea's wolf huffed, then stood up and turned and ran into the trees.I followed. We ran hard and fast, weaving through the forest like shadows. My wolf moved through the forest like she was born to it, leaping over logs, dodging branches, her paws barely touching the ground.Rhea set a brutal pace, leading the way. Her grey f
HALEYI turned to leave. My legs barely worked. They felt like they belonged to someone else. I managed to make it to the door, then stopped.“What about her?” I asked, not looking back at Olivia's body.“What about her?”“She deserves a burial. A proper grave at least.”Kael laughed again. “She deserves whatever I feel she deserves. Which is to rot. And she will. Right here. As a reminder.”I didn't say anything else. I just nodded and walked out of the room, down the hall, out the front door.Slow and steady, like I wasn't terrified out of my mind.Behind me, I heard the cabin door close.I kept walking.I breathed in the smell of clean, fresh air, stumbling away from the cabin, my feet moving on their own. The cold air hit my face and I sucked it in greedily, trying to scrub the smell of death from my lungs.I walked fast, not looking back, not stopping until I was deep in the forest. When I was far enough that I couldn't see the cabin anymore, I finally stopped and leaned agains
PENIELLuciano stepped closer, until we were toe to toe, his hands reaching up to cup my face. “I can't lose you, Peniel. I can't.”“You won't.” I reached up and touched his wrist. “But I have to do this. If there's even a chance…”“There's always a chance. That doesn't mean you take it.”“I'm not the same girl who got kidnapped before.” My voice was firm now. “I've trained with Rhea. I've fought. I've survived. I can do this. I can face him.”“Name one thing worse than Henry.”I thought about it. “Kael. Julie. The Angel.” I shrugged. “They're all monsters. The only difference is Henry is the one who made me.”“Face him alone? In the middle of nowhere? That's suicide.” Luciano shook his head. “I won't risk you.”“You won't be risking me. I'll have warriors with me.”“He said to come alone.”“Then don't let me go alone.” I looked at him. “You can have warriors hidden. You can follow me. He said come alone, but he won't know you're there.”“Besides, its obvious he said that because he's
PENIELThe gardens were really quiet these days.To be honest, I liked them like this. Peaceful. No servants rushing past. No warriors training nearby. Just the flowers and the bees and the warm sun on my face.I sat on a stone bench near the rose bushes, a book open in my lap that I wasn't really reading. My mind kept drifting, too full to comprehend the words on the page. But it gave me something to do with my hands.I thought about Luciano. The recent way he looked at me sometimes, like he was afraid I would disappear if he blinked.I thought about Haley, out there somewhere, playing a dangerous game. I thought about Preya, still in that bed, still not waking up.I thought about my father. The thought made me shiver even in the warm sun. Henry. Out there somewhere. Planning. Waiting.I pushed the thought away and tried to focus on the book.I heard the crunch of gravel as someone walked towards me but didn't look up.Until the shadow fell over me, blocking the sun. I raised my he
HALEY“N-no. I did what you said. I got close to her. I did everything.”“Did you?” The knife pressed harder. I felt another sting, more warmth. “Because from what I hear, you've been very cozy in that infirmary. Eating their food. Letting their healer fix you up. Getting real comfortable in that pack.”“I was playing the part. Like you told me to.”“Playing the part.” He laughed. It didn't sound nice.“And yet here you are, alone. No one followed you. No one's watching or peeping,” He paused. “Its almost like they trust you.”My heart pounded so hard I thought it would burst. “They don't trust me. They watch me every second, every hour of the day. I had to sneak out just to get here.”“Is that so?”“Yes. Please. I'm on your side. I've always been on your side.”He smirked, “Not with that dead body you won't.” I whimpered, my eyes going to the body, then quickly bouncing away.I couldn't look at her again. I stared at the floor, tears dripping off my face. The knife stayed on my throa
HALEYI pushed the door open. It swung inward with a long, low creak. Darkness stretched out, thick and oppressing. The smell hit me first. Decay. Blood. Rot. It was dark inside. The windows were covered up with boards, letting in only thin strips of fading light. I could see shapes. A table. Some chairs. I reminded myself that I wouldn't go into that room. The room where it happened. I'd leave the message if Kael wasn’t there and get out fast. No need to linger more than necessary.I stepped inside, one foot over the threshold.Took another, then one more.Fast. Too fast.An arm wrapped around me from behind. Cold metal pressed against my throat. A knife.I froze. My breath stopped.“Well, well, well.” The familiar voice sang in my ear. “Look who decided to come back and pay dear old me a visit.” He mocked.Kael.I couldn't move. Couldn't breathe. He pressed the knife harder against my throat, I hissed, feeling it nick the skin lightly.“Kael,” I said, his name calling out like a
