ELOWYN

I woke up to my hair being pulled almost painfully. I opened my mouth to scream in pain, but someone quickly clamped their hand over my mouth, stopping the sound from escaping.

I turned desperately towards the bed, determined to cry for help, but the bed was empty.

And then I was dragged like a petty prisoner out of the Alpha's bed and into the corridor of his chamber. There she was waiting, her eyes filled with so much rage that if she were a witch, she would have set me ablaze just by looking at me.

I looked wildly around for signs of Kieran. Where had the alpha gone?

The hand over my mouth dropped, and the sharp tug on my hair finally receded.

I turned to glare at the fool who had dragged me, only to realize it was the guard from yesterday.

How dare he? When he could have simply tapped me awake?

"Why did you—"

Smack! A loud slap cut me off mid-sentence. My head snapped to the side, and I held my cheek, tears spilling instantly. The humiliation of being slapped in front of

CHAPTER TWENTY TWO ELOWYNI held Betsy until her cries subsided and the only sound that came from her was small hiccups. Her trembling had lessened, but she still clung to me like a frightened child. When her body finally relaxed, I guided her gently toward the hay bale. We both sat, the dry straw crackling softly beneath us. Betsy stared miserably into the distance, her eyes unfocused. I stayed beside her in silence. I didn’t know what to say and didn’t know how to offer words that could stitch up the hurt in her heart. All I could do was sit close enough that she would feel less alone.“David has been my only friend,” she whispered after a long silence, her voice low and sad. “If anything happens to him, I’ll never—”“Don’t say that,” I cut in quickly, resting a hand on her back. I could hear the desperation in her voice, and it scared me. “David looks strong. I am sure he’ll be able to keep the enemies off his back. We should continue to beseech the goddess to keep him safe.”“She

CHAPTER TWENTY-ONEAt my words, David turned to regard me, his dark eyes settling on my face with quiet curiosity.“Sorry about that,” he said gently, his voice carrying a natural warmth that immediately softened the air. “And who might you be?”“Her name is Elowyn, and we share the room,” Betsy answered quickly, almost too quickly, before darting toward me. Only then did her eyes land on the spilled drink at our feet.“Oh shoot,” she whispered, her hand flying to her mouth.I bent down, picking up the now empty container, and when I straightened, I turned to give Betsy a knowing stare. She fiddled with the embroidery on her dress, cheeks flushing red as she looked at me apologetically. “So sorry. I guess I was just… a little excited to see David.”“It’s alright,” I murmured, softening my tone. I shifted my attention to the man still standing nearby. “It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance, David.”His lips quirked in the faintest smile. He inclined his head politely. “The pleasure

ELOWYN “I’m so sorry for your loss, Betsy,” I said in a tone I hoped carried the weight of my sympathy.Betsy gave me a sad smile, and even though her eyes glistened with unshed tears, she didn’t let them fall.“It’s fine,” she whispered. “I have made peace with their passing, and I know they are happy wherever they are. Besides, they’ve got each other.”I looked at Betsy, who was staring into the distance, that same small sad smile still resting on her lips. She was so strong for this. Stronger than I thought anyone her age could be.She turned back after a few seconds of silence and asked, “How about you? Why are you serving at the palace?”I looked around, my mouth half open, unsure of how to answer. My throat tightened.Betsy must have misread my hesitation, because she got up quickly. “Take the stool,” she said, gesturing toward the seat she had just vacated. Then she perched herself on a hay bale beside me, arranging her skirts carefully.I eyed her long blue gown. “Are you sur

CHAPTER NINETEENELOWYN Betsy stepped towards one of the goats, and I watched, expecting the white-feathered animal to run away like Papa’s own liked to do.But shockingly, the goat stood still, allowing Betsy to slip her hands between its legs and press its large hanging pink breasts.Betsy had already placed a silver bowl underneath, milking into it. She made it look so easy. But I knew better.“See?” She turned to say to me. “It’s really easy.”I shifted from one foot to the other. “Does that mean I should try?” I asked.Betsy nodded. “You should definitely try.” She grabbed a milking stool and made herself comfortable on it, waiting.I stepped forward, heart pounding as I eyed the goat with suspicion. I could see the goat eyeing me from its periphery.I paused, unsure whether to step forward. Papa’s goat had once kicked me so hard in the shin I had been left limping for days.“Does she make you uncomfortable? You don’t have to milk her today if you’re not in the mood,” Betsy said

ELOWYNI dragged my feet down the hall, dropping my head in shame as a few of the older maidservants passed, looking at me with nothing but disgust.I was still in the short dress from yesterday. And right now, in the bright eyes of the day, I felt utterly ashamed to be caught wearing something like that.I moved really fast, wrapping my arms protectively around my chest to hide what little decency I had left until I got to the room that I'd been assigned yesterday.Thankfully, the room was empty. I looked around the room, taking in the dirty walls that looked like they were in desperate need of paint and the old curtain. The only available bunk yesterday had been the bottom bunk. And thankfully, Betsy was the one who occupied the top bunk.I dropped onto the bunk and wiped the last of my tears away. I quickly removed the indecent dress and pushed my finger through the soft, sheer cotton, ripping it in two.My heart pounded hard in my chest as I looked down at the ripped dress in my h
