I twirled in the mirror in front of me with a smile on my face, checking myself one more time as I anticipated Steven’s return. He had been away for a four day business trip and in those four days, I discovered I was pregnant!
Today was our anniversary and it was almost 8pm and Steven should’ve been back by now but he wasn’t.
I quickly sent him a text, asking about his whereabouts as I walked to the dinning to make sure everything was still.
Steven and I have been trying for years to get pregnant but all efforts proved futile. We’ve been to so many specialists and doctors and we’re always told the same thing. That we were fine and in due time would get a child.
Of course I had almost given up hope because Steven’s grandmother had taken to making my life a living hell and at some point had threatened to bring another woman who could give her grandson children but Steven had refused.
He was determined to wait it out with me and finally we were going to have our own bundle of joy.
The front door opened, alerting me of Steven’s arrival as I ran to him, giving him a hug.
“I’ve missed you,” I said, holding him.
Steven chuckled lightly, wrapping his arms around me. He buried his nose in my hair, breathing me in.
“I’ve missed you more my love,” he said, pulling away slightly to capture my lips in a kiss.
Steven kissed me deeply, making my knees go weak and when he finally pulled away, I was dazed by how much his kisses affected me.
“Happy Anniversary baby. Another year to remind myself that I’m the luckiest man in the whole universe,” he whispered to me.
I moaned involuntarily as he leaned closer, leaving deep kisses on my neck. I would’ve loved to stay in his arms and let him shower me with kisses but I had a surprise for him that couldn’t wait so I pulled away from him with a smile on my face.
Steven let out a groan. “Don’t go. I want you in my arms,” he protested, his hands reaching out for me and pulling me closer.
I giggled as I slapped his chest playfully.
“You need to shower and eat too. Plus, I’ve got a special surprise for you,” I said shyly.
Steven wiggled his eyes at me. “Does this surprise have you without your clothes on?”
“Steven!” I exclaimed, blushing profusely.
Steve grinned at me, making my heart flutter.
I walked away from him, smiling as I took out the little socks I had purchased at Walmart and handing it over to Steven.
Steven looked at the baby’s socks, a frown on his face as he accessed it.
“What is this?” He asked.
I bit my lips as I blushed hard.
“Gloria, what is this?” He asked, his tone more firm and stern.
“We’re going to be parents. I’m pregnant!” I said excitedly as I rushed to hug him but Steven took a step back, his eyes moving back and forth between me and the socks in his hand.
“That’s not true,” Steven replied sternly, his jaws hardening as he glared at me.
“Is this some prank? Because it’s not funny Gloria,” he spat out throwing the socks on the floor.
My brows furrowed as I looked at him.
“What do you mean? Why…why would I ever joke about this when it’s been our dream to have our own child,” I said, surprised at the words that came out from his mouth.
“Steven…” I moved closer but Steven took another step back, his hands stretched out as he kept me away.
He was looking down and when he finally raised his head up, he had tears glistening in his eyes.
My heart melted at how emotional he was about us having a baby that I couldn’t help but smile.
“I know it’s a lot to take in. I cried for hours when the doctor confirmed I was pregnant,” I said, placing my hand on my tummy.
Steven glared at my tummy. “How far gone are you?” He asked sternly, his voice cold.
I frowned at his behavior but didn’t speak on it. Perhaps he was still in shock.
“Gloria, how far gone are you!” Steven yelled out this time angrily.
I jumped in fright, my eyes wide at his outburst.
“Two months. The doctor said I was two months pregnant,” I replied frightened.
“Jesus… you’ve been… God!” Steven exclaimed as tears spilled from his eyes.
I was immensely confused and didn’t know what was happening.
“What’s wrong? I thought you’d be happy to know I was pregnant. Why are you acting this way…”
“Because you’ve been lying to me!” Steven yelled in my face.
“How could you do something like this to me Gloria? How?! You’re my wife!” He yelled out angrily.
“Yes I am but I still don’t get it? What did I do?”
Steven glared at me, wiping the tears from his eyes.
“Who’s the father of your child?” He asked.
“What?” I whispered, shocked.
His question was like a knife being plunged into my chest.
“You heard me clearly. Who is the father of your child because I certainly know I’m not the father,” Steven gritted out.
“Are you crazy? What do you mean by that Steven? I’ve never cheated on you if that’s what you’re trying to insinuate. This baby is yours and you know it!” I yelled at him, disgusted that he would think so low of me.
Steven bursted out laughing like a maniac and I wondered what was funny in all this.
“This isn’t funny Steven!” I snapped.
Steven stopped laughing, his eyes glaring daggers at me. He looked like he wanted to skin me alive and for a moment I was for my life.
“But it's funny Gloria. Because I want to know how possible it is that I’m the father of your child when in fact I’m sterile. Huh! Tell me!” He yelled out.
My heart stopped beating as my eyes widened, Steven’s words resonating in my head.
If he was sterile then how was I pregnant?
“That’s not true. I am pregnant right? And the doctors? The doctors said we were both okay.,”
I reminded him.
Steven shook his head. “The doctors said what I wanted them to say. I can’t have children Gloria. That’s why I want to know how it is possible you’re carrying a child?” He gritted out.
I was confused as my mouth opened and closed like a fish. I was speechless and couldn’t find words to express myself.
“No Steven. You have to be joking,” I said.
“The only joker is you Gloria,” tears rolled from his eyes. “ I can't even look at you. You disgust me,” he gritted out.
“You have to believe me Steven. I’ve never cheated on you and could never do that,” I swore as tears pooled in my eyes.
Steven refused to look at me as he chuckled darkly. When he finally did look at me, I wished he never did because he looked at me as if I was dirty to him.
“Get your things and leave,” he commanded.
I shook my head as tears spilled from my eyes. “You..you can’t do that Steven. You can’t just… this is your child!” I argued.
Steven rushed at me, holding me by the arm as his nails dug into my skin.
“Why do I even bother? Everything you have down to the dress was paid for by me. The only thing to do to a whore like you is to put you back in the streets where you belong,” he growled at me, dragging me to the entrance of the house.
I struggled and kicked around as Steven hauled me to the door, throwing me out of the house.
“You can’t just leave me here to freeze to death!” I exclaimed, wrapping my arms around myself.
“You’re dead to me Gloria,” Steve said, slamming the door in my face.
Tears rolled down my cheeks as I banged at the door, hoping he would open up but he never did and that’s when it dawned on me that Steven had dumped me with a baby I wasn’t sure who it’s father was anymore.
It was the middle of July and the weather wasn’t so favorable as I shivered outside in the cold. After banging at the door and screaming Steven’s name with no progress.
Barefooted in the cold, I walked aimlessly wandering what to do. The hospital… I need to go back there and confirm if I was really pregnant.
I had all the symptoms: nausea, a missed period and drowsiness. Definitely, the tests didn't lie. I was pregnant. But who was the father?
I stopp

GLORIA I could hear the monitor beating steadily as I forced my eyes open. The bright atmosphere humbled my sight immediately, and I shut my eyes, breathing heavily as my chest pounded rapidly.I opened my eyes again and I looked around. I was the only one in the room, a cannula was connected to my veins causing me pain. Since I got pregnant, my body has become extremely sensitive to motion. I couldn't move for a moment and I tried to breathe. “Where am I?” I asked myself—but it was obvious that I was in a hospital.
