PENELOPE

Liam’s directions were clear—turn right past the entryway, second hallway, third door. But still, I found myself tiptoeing like I’d broken in. Which, technically, I had. Into his space.

The penthouse was… quiet. Not dead-quiet, but quiet. Warm lights glowed against the smooth ash-colored walls.

But what caught my eyes first was the POP, the grand pristine white ceiling design, it was sleek and very geometric, it had soft gold lights tucked into each corner like a hidden treasure. I remember one time when Christian and I had followed his friend Alan, to go get something nice for his wife, Naomi in Greece.

While Alan was dealing with the payments, Chris and I had sat down together just criticizing just how awful the POP of that store was. It was so awful, so not straight. It pissed Chris so much he almost made a call to have the shop closed down.

Had to tell him it wasn’t any of our concern, and he shouldn’t be shutting down a business because of their poor POP.

So it’s nic

PENELOPEIt had barely been a full day since Christian got home. He was still moving like someone had unplugged and rebooted him. Which was fair—being stabbed probably rearranged your organs and your attitude.Definitely the attitude.Liam had walked in not long after breakfast with a smirk and a mission. “Ryuji wants a feast,” he said. “He called this morning. Said it’s long overdue and he insists you bring your best work. His words. Not mine. And it’s cause to celebrate that Christian is still alive.”I raised a brow. “Feast? As in a full-blown celebration? He’s alive, yes but a full-blown celebration? Do the Japanese go out of their way like this?”“As in you’re baking, I’m shopping, and Christian’s staying his ass put until further notice. And yes, they actually go out of their way.”I rolled my eyes. “Tell him I’ll do it. But he’s covering ingredients. Imported butter isn’t cheap.”“Already said he would.” He said with a sly smirk plastered on his face. “Told me to tell you to ma

CHRISTIANThe first time I woke up, it was her voice I heard. It was faint, soft. Like she was talking from underwater—or maybe I was the one drowning. The words came in broken echoes, but I caught enough to bleed from the inside.“…I didn’t mean it. About Alex… I was just mad… I love you…”Her hand was on mine. Her head resting near my arm. Her warm scent cut through the sterile stench of antiseptic. I wanted to tell her I heard her. That I didn’t blame her. That she could scream all the awful things in the world and I’d still want her more than my own fucking pulse. But the blackness pulled me under before I could make a sound. When I came around the second time, the ceiling was blindingly white and too still. A slow, rhythmic beep pulsed beside me—machine, not heart. Though both were working harder than they should be.Pain radiated from my side like a dull saw blade. My ribs ached. My throat was dry. But I was alive.I blinked, slowly turning my head to the empty chair I saw her s

PENELOPEThe knock came soft at first, then firmer.I stirred groggily, my neck was a bit stiff from the angle I’d slept in. I’d fallen asleep with my head resting on Christian’s arm, my body curled slightly into his side. The hospital smell was still in the air, even though the air conditioner did its best to get rid of it, but underneath it—I could still smell him.The door opened, as I blinked my eyes, trying to adjust to the morning light that streamed through the windows. I had forgotten to close the other side before sitting back down beside him last night.“Mrs. Hilton?” a nurse said gently, stepping inside. “Sorry to wake you. Just need to check his vitals.”At the same moment, the door opened a bit wider and Liam poked his head in. His shirt was ironed now, his face was freshly shaven, he looked completely different from the disheveled man I saw last night.“Hey,” he said, giving me a small smile. “Didn’t mean to wake you. I just got back.”I sat up, quickly brushing the slee

PENELOPEThe sliding doors flew open before I could stop them. The hospital’s lighting hit me like a slap, and my heart was racing so fast it felt like it was trying to outrun time itself.“Hilton,” I said breathlessly to the nurse at the front desk. “Christian Hilton. He was brought in—stab wound—”“He’s in surgery,” she replied gently. “They’re stabilizing him. You can wait down the hall—right side. There’s a lounge.”Surgery.I nodded and turned down the hallway, ignoring the sterile smell of antiseptic that filled the air. I hated hospitals so much, my mum had been to the most expensive of hospitals and yet there was nothing anyone could do to save her.Liam stood when he saw me, his suit jacket was wrinkled, and his hair a mess. He didn’t say anything at first. He just held out his arms.I rushed into them, hugging him. “He’s not dead,” Liam murmured into my hair. “Don’t think like that. They said he lost a lot of blood, but we brought him just in time.”I pulled back, wiping my

CHAPTER SIXTY-FOUR — PENELOPEMy phone kept vibrating violently against the nightstand, yanking me out of sleep like a slap. The room was dark. The digital clock read 3:42 a.m. I reached for it, blinking against the glow, and saw Liam Anderson on the screen.Liam? At this hour?.“Hello?” My voice was groggy, caught between dream and dread. This call better damn be important because I was this close to having an orgasm in my sleep.Yes, I miss him so much to have a dream about him.“Penelope,” Liam’s voice came sharp, and fast. “It’s Christian.”Whatever sleep that was left in my eyes vanished. “What happened?” I stuttered.“He’s been stabbed. It’s bad.” My chest tightened so fast it felt like my ribs were caving in. I sat there frozen for a second, my phone still pressed to my ear, but my legs felt numb. My brain was scrambling, trying to visualize him hurt, alone, maybe dying, and failing. It was too much.“Where is he?” I asked, already flinging the duvet off my body. My hands had
