Chapter 6

Question

***

POV: Lia Salvador

I thought I could still flex my wedding dress at some people. It might look so simple, but I truly love it!

Renz made me think so.

However, I am wrong.

I didn’t even have a chance to invite Cali.

If I knew that it would end up like this – I should have asked for the money he spent on this dress and wore that white dress inside my dresser, which I used when I was asked by our neighbor to be her daughter’s godmother.

But then, I realized that this could be a better option.

First, no one could blow up my cover. Better be careful than be caught up with my parents later on.

And second, we will soon get a divorce. It would be hard for me to explain to people how we ended up like that. Of course, no one would ask Renz – but to me, it’s a different case. I don’t want to bug my mind out – thinking of possible reasons to say.

I discreetly rolled my eyes because of my thoughts.

Besides, it is as if this is a ‘real’ wedding. I mean. Yes, we did sign the marriage papers, but not because of love. I would only treat this ‘real’ if there is love between us.

‘Oh, yeah? You don’t love him?’ A part of me commented teasingly.

I grit my teeth – as I drink the champagne on my flute.

‘Of course!’ I retorted back to my mind.

However, my mind is screaming ‘lie’ inside me and it is making me feel so annoyed.

The ceremony is already done.

I am officially Mrs. Lawrence David McGregor.

And we are celebrating at a private restaurant. Renz is talking to the judge, who presided in our wedding a while ago. While I am waiting for him here – almost bored to death.

I try stopping myself from frowning.

“Hey…”

My brows met as I heard someone behind me.

When I turned my head around to see who it was, I saw a familiar man – Joseth Iverson Thompson, my husband’s best friend.

I almost roll my eyes at the mere mention of the word ‘husband.’

I immediately flash a fake smile.

Besides, I don’t even know whether Renz told him about our setup or not.

I should be really careful.

“Oh, hi!” I replied warmly.

Joseth flashes a boyish grin – I grunt in irritation at the back of my mind.

His light blue eyes sparkled with playfulness – something that I knew of. The man is a total player.

Well, I can’t blame those women anyway.

Joseth is a total package – like Renz.

Not to mention, he is more approachable and charming.

However, he is such a jerk who only wants to play with women's hearts. And right now, he is screaming that kind of stench.

I swallow hard to choke my laughter because of that thought.

“I can’t believe we will meet this way, huh? My best friend really married you…” Joseth commented – sounded as if this situation was the most unbelievable thing he had experienced.

‘Believe me, I think the same way…’ I mentally commented on the side.

However, I will not certainly blurt it out.

My smile widens.

“Oh, and why did you think so?” I resorted back – using my most shocked and curious tone of voice.

Joseth clears his throat – and I almost let out a bark of laughter. I got my champagne flute and sip into it instead – trying to hide my hilarity.

“Well… I… I will just keep that to myself.” He replied playfully.

This time, my patience is running out.

My left brow instantly shot upwards.

“I don’t know what you are talking about, Mr. Thompson. Maybe, you can enlighten me.” I told him – trying to sound calm and unbothered, but I know I am failing miserably.

Joseth smirks teasingly.

“Well, your looks. I can’t believe that this is Lawrence’s type of woman. Oh, no offense meant.” He said hilariously.

My blood boils – but I maintain my calm demeanor.

I am still in my disguise. I decided to do so. However, it is backfiring now.

For the past few years, I entirely don’t care about other people’s opinions of my looks. I am certainly not affected by any of it.

However, when I met Renz, everything seemed to change.

And I don’t like it.

“Well, maybe you can tell me what you think he prefers, so I can understand what you mean…” I said menacingly – not backing down at this playboy jerk.

This time, he swallows hard.

Perhaps, he didn’t anticipate my comebacks.

What?

Did he really think I could simply stay still and won’t say a word?

Well, I might dress this way – an old-fashioned woman with thick rimmed eyeglasses, but I won’t let him degrade me. I won’t let him get into my nerves, well, almost… but not quiet.

He was about to say another word when I felt warmth on my left shoulder.

My spine shivers – as I feel the electrifying sensation creeping into my nerves. I almost curse out loud. I clench my both hands – trying to stifle the tickling emotions inside me.

“What are you doing to my wife, Seth…”

It isn’t a question. But it seems to be a warning.

And my hunch is right when Joseth raises his both hands in the air after a few seconds.

It seems like they are both deliberating about something.

I want to roll my eyes at that.

However, inside my mind echoes with something else.

‘He calls me ‘wife’!’

I bit my tongue – trying to stifle my scream.

That only added fuel to the fluttering emotions inside my stomach.

Joseth explains that he is congratulating us. And I have not in my right mind to contradict his words.

“Let’s go…” Renz commanded coldly afterwards.

It is simple and direct.

It is like he is just calling his secretary… his subordinates.

All of the bubbles I built a while ago automatically burst in front of me.

This time, it is crystal clear. I certainly realized that this is what I signed up for. Not the one I am daydreaming about.

I mentally take a deep breath – hoping that the bitterness that took over me will eventually subsides.

But it didn’t.

However, I flash a gentle smile.

Something that I already mastered well in my entire life – and stand up… like a puppet.

“What’s wrong?”

That question hit me so hard.

I give him an asking glare – but all I could see in his deep blue eyes are curiosity.

I don’t know what to say – so, I simply shake my head.

Renz let out a deep breath.

“Well, then, don’t cover your real emotions now. Especially in front of me.”

I was taken aback.

Did he know that I was faking my smile?

The butterflies on my stomach flutter like there is no tomorrow.

And damn! I totally like it.
