"Oh, my God," the girl whispered. She didn't want to keep listening to that story with its typical tragic ending, yet she felt compelled to hear the end of the dark tale her aunt was telling.

"The desperation of our mother, of all of us as a family seeing her so shattered that she couldn't even cope with what was happening to her—in fact, she had always been Mother's most protected and pampered one, the one who fell sick the most and all those little details—that was what made what she was experiencing in that present moment turn into the most difficult situation imaginable."

The woman stopped pacing back and forth and sat down on the empty sofa. She clasped her hands in her lap and looked at her niece with her deep eyes. The niece was visibly affected by what had happened in the past, but now, in the present, she could experience the pain in a more intense way, as if it were something completely brand new. Her heart was tight, and she had a lump in her throat that made it hard to swallow normally. She had never felt such intense pain and was picturing the entire scene of what had probably happened to her real mother. Guilt continued to rise to an uncontrollable level, very hard to measure.

"Who is my father?" she asked through tears, realizing that the man she had been calling "Dad" all those years was nothing more than a lie.

"I haven't finished," the woman said harshly. She continued the story, and the young woman had no choice but to listen. "My little sister did everything she could that night; she fought and resisted with all her might until her body allowed it. However, she died, perhaps a minute after you were born. She looked at you and held you with the little strength she had left, and then she left. Damn it! She had left this world, and it was all your fault."

"I am so sorry for what happened, but I don't think it's fair for you to blame me for a situation I never wanted and wasn't even aware of. I am not responsible for what happened; I am innocent in all of this too. You can't just hate me over a matter I'm involved in, but didn't cause," she told her, looking straight into her eyes, feeling deeply hurt by all of it. She wasn't guilty of what happened—of anything at all. No matter how much the woman vented and threw the exact opposite in her face, she knew she was innocent.

"To me, you are and always will be. You are the only reason my sister is no longer in this life, and besides, you were the only one who should have left this world, not her. Do you understand now why I can't love you? Even so, all this time I've given you everything: an education and a good life. You can't complain. But I can't take it anymore; I don't want to keep looking into your eyes because every time I do, I remember her. It's like I'm looking right at her; you look so much alike, and it affects me too much. You can't keep living here. I am so sorry."

"Isn't Leonardo my father? Tell me. And what you're doing doesn't seem fair. It's not my fault I remind you of Mom. In short, you're kicking me out because I stir up pain in you that shouldn't be there, because you're also my family, I'm your niece, and nothing is going to change that," she spat out, heartbroken, and stood up. The other woman imitated her.

"What were you thinking? Leonardo isn't your real father either. The bastard who got my sister pregnant vanished as if by magic; he just used her, ended up clipping her wings, and threw her to her death. He was just an abuser and a damned coward who didn't have the guts or the courage to show up and take responsibility for what he had done, because he also had to take responsibility for my sister and her baby, but he didn't even have the intention during the time she was pregnant to support her. And truthfully, none of this surprised us. What could be expected of a man like that? Nothing good, of course."

Upon hearing her aunt's admission that Leonardo wasn't her father, she didn't feel perplexed or collapse onto the sofa, shocked by her words, since she was already expecting another bombshell to leave her suspended among crushing ruins. Even so, something inside her was breaking, leaving tiny shards of glass embedded in her skin and opening wounds that ached, burned, and had no cure, because no ointment could heal each of those wounds, let alone close the gasps.

Bitterness mixed with various feelings, shattering her emotions as if it were a glass cup at the edge of a table—well, she was no longer near the edge, but worse still, lying shattered on the floor.

Special? The word carried far too much weight; in fact, it could almost be considered a synonym for the man himself. Yet she hadn't the faintest clue what Ashton was up to."I guess I'll just have to stay in the dark, since you won't give me a single hint.""I think you know. You just need to think a little harder.""I'm doing my absolute best and coming up blank."He kissed her lips once more before pulling away to finish fixing his hair. He wasn't going to budge. As soon as they were ready, they got into the car and set off, utterly unaware that the worst was about to happen.Alicia dropped her phone to the floor upon hearing the news. She hated that something like this was happening and nearly passed out right then and there. Salvatore rushed to her side to steady her."Dad and Hope, they... No, no, no!"Salvatore picked up the phone for her, seeing that she was too choked up to speak."Hello? Can you explain to me what's going on?""Sir, I'm the doctor from..."The voice on the ot

They had plans to go to a restaurant that evening, and Ashton had a surprise in store that the young woman couldn't even begin to imagine; she didn't have the slightest suspicion. Meanwhile, once she found herself in the room she used to occupy back when their relationship was still a clandestine affair, she rummaged through the bedside table for some cash she kept there and decided to run to a pharmacy. She filled Alicia in right away to avoid any more surprises.True to form, her friend went with her to buy the test and stayed by her side, waiting out the agonizing five minutes for the result."Oh my god! Months ago I told you to put yourself in my shoes, and now I think you literally did. If you turn out to be pregnant, I am going to scream so loud. That would be wonderful news—both of us expecting a baby!" Alicia smiled."I'm nervous. What if this isn't what your dad wants? God! He's already been through this with you. Do you think he'd want to go through it all over again?""Dad

Time slipped away faster and faster, and Alicia’s belly grew. She looked more radiant and beautiful with each passing day. By now, she and Salvatore had moved into a luxurious apartment in New York City. Even so, the interior offered an unmatched sense of comfort, making it feel worlds away from the suburbs. Everything was calm—the exact kind of calm she needed. That Thursday night, Hope surrendered herself in body and soul to her man, the one she loved.Ashton always knew how to touch every inch of her skin, tracing passion across the contours of her perfect physique. When the act of lovemaking ended, they lay entwined side by side. Then, the young woman drifted off into a thought that kept echoing through her mind. She had been feeling a bit strange lately, and she was terrified that the inevitable might be happening. She always remembered that he practiced safe sex, and she had even started taking the pill. But there was always that tiny chance, just as it had happened to Alicia."

While they debated when to do it, they were fully experiencing Alicia's journey as she prepared in advance for her baby's arrival. Sure, it was still a few months before she gave birth, but she had decided to hurry and get everything her little one would need. They didn't know yet if it would be a boy or a girl, though she had no preference. Salvatore was dead set that it would be a little princess—or maybe those were just his own wishes for a girl. However, he also made it clear a boy would be welcomed with the exact same love."Ashton, what do you think you're doing?" she scolded him playfully. She was washing dishes when he appeared behind her, wrapped his arms around her, and kissed her neck, making her giggle."Don't worry. I just want to feel my woman. Can't I do that?""Not here in the kitchen.""I don't care.""I don't want anyone to see us. If you don't care, I do."Sighing, he kissed her shoulder before releasing her and stepping beside her to watch what she was doing."Are

Alicia decided to invite Salvatore over to the mansion as evening fell and he was free. Hope insisted on leaving them alone, but Alicia earnestly asked her to stay in the living room with them. That way, the young woman witnessed when Alicia told the truth to her partner about her pregnancy."So we're going to have a child, Salvatore. Please hug me, tell me everything is going to be okay," she asked him, taking the initiative herself to step into his arms, and the man embraced her."My love, of course it's going to be okay. I want to stand by you through this process, and you're making me the happiest man alive with this news."She had already told Salvatore; now only her father was missing, who hadn't returned from work yet."I know you're nervous, but trust that everything will turn out fine.""Right, it's not that easy.""I know," he sighed. The two of them were sitting at the dining table when Ashton suddenly arrived. Alicia began to feel even more nervous than before upon her fat

"Of course, sir. I can take care of accompanying her myself.""I appreciate it so much. Please keep me updated on everything. If anything comes up, contact me."When she finished talking to her boss, she walked over to the young woman lying down."Your father says we need to take you to a doctor, and that's the most sensible thing in these cases.""I don't think it's necessary. It was just a faint and nothing more.""I don't agree with you, Alicia. Carolina and your father are completely right. The best thing is for you to see a doctor so you can get a diagnosis.""I'm not a kid anymore. I know you guys have good intentions, but I don't see how it was anything major. Look, I feel fine now," she huffed, crossing her arms in a fit of annoyance."Well, I'm just telling you what your father just informed me.""He's always been way too overprotective of me and you guys know it," she rolled her eyes, and Hope studied her friend's behavior, noting that bad humor had suddenly surrounded her.
