Chapter 9

Kairos stopped in front of Spencer's driveway, but I remained nailed on my spot, not wanting to move even an inch. I badly want to bite on my fingernail as my anxiety starts getting the best of me.

What would I say if they asked me why Kairos would want to move in with him after they left us together for less than two hours when Rory had been following him around like his golden retriever, and yet he didn't even pat her on her head once as a form of showing his affection? What should I say? That Kairos probably fell for my charms? We all know that I don't have charms and best believe that they know entirely about my background, though they won't say it straight to my face. I think they would eventually find out that I fucked with their daughter's husband.

"Rory, we're home," Kairos said, which snapped me back to reality. I glance at him. He is already waiting for me outside of his car. I subtly swallow a lump in my throat before I unbuckle my seatbelt. Two steps away from the front door, it suddenly opened. Nicholas barged in with his face full of worry.

He darted his eyes straight at me, and all that I could do was smile at him and try to communicate with him through my eyes.

"Nicholas, you look so worried about your sister. I wonder why is that?" Without taking his eyes off Kairo Maximus Lancaster. Nicholas snatched me from my fiance.

"I got your message, and that won't be possible, unfortunately. We're marrying Rory off, so as much as we can. We'd love to have her with us until your wedding day," he said. Nicholas stared straight into Kairo's eyes like he meant to challenge his authority and dominance.

My head started to spin as I thought of an idea of how I could ease down the tension between the two of them when Niklaus Spencer walked in on us.

"Darling, your home... and Kairos," he mumbled—Niklaus glanced at Nicholas's hand, which was holding my wrist.

The oldest Spencer sighed, bringing me and Nicholas' attention toward him.

"Darling, I told our maid to pack up your favorite stuff like what your fiance wants. I'd prefer you to move in with him starting today," he said. Nicholas quickly turned his head on his father. I saw how protest quickly filled his eyes, but his father flashed a warning look that stopped him from speaking.

"It's settled now? I am taking Rory home after dinner," Kairos announced. Niklaus invited him to come inside and continue their conversation, leaving Nicholas and me behind.

I lowered my head and made sure that my eyes were pasted on the intricate embellishment of the Jimmy Choo pumps that I had on my feet. I was waiting to hear something from Nicholas, and when he remained silent. I looked upon him with my own will.

"I don't know what I did," I lied. Nicholas breathes deeply. I can sense his frustration. His father sees nothing wrong with what's happening, but I am sure that he thinks otherwise.

"It's just a week. I won't do something to mess up this wedding deal. I swear. He won't find out that I am fake." He stared at me. His eyes softened a bit before he nodded his head. A sign that he finally agrees with what is happening.

"Isla, I need you to tell me every single thing that will happen while you're living with him so I can tell my sister about it once we find her," he told me. Nicholas's eyes softened even more after he stared into mine.

"Why?"

I shake my head at him and smile. "Finally, someone calls me by my real name today," I told him, which made him chuckle.

"I am not supposed to call you by your name. It was a slip of the tongue, but I am glad it made you happy."

Nicholas guided me inside the Spencer mansion. This family reminded me that Kairos and the Lancasters are more affluent and influential than they are, and now I am starting to wonder if Kairos's house is way bigger than this or if he is one of those bachelors who prefers to live in a penthouse.

We were going down the stairs that led to the European-style pool of the mansion, where Niklau brought Kairos as they talked about their things. I fixed the strap of my bag, and my eyes briefly went to my ring finger, and I realized something that made me grab Nicholas to stop him from walking. He stared at me with confusion flowing down from his eyes after I showed him my hand where I was supposed to be wearing an engagement ring.

I think Kairos didn't notice that I wasn't wearing an engagement ring since he didn't ask about it, or maybe he can't be bothered.

"I don't have an engagement ring. Where is Rory's engagement ring?" I asked him.

"She doesn't have one." I gawked at him from where we were standing. I can see Kairos standing meters away from the pool. In front of him is Mr. Spencer, who is busy discussing something with him, but Kairo's eyes and attention aren't with him now, but with me.

"What do you mean she doesn't have one? I am sure that Kairos can buy her one. Multiple engagement rings if Rory wants to."

"That was Rory's last string." My eyebrow cross at his cryptic words.

"As far as I know. Rory is asking for an engagement ring from Kairos. He didn't get her one, but he handed her his black card, saying that she should get one for herself. Kairos said that he is too busy to get her an engagement ring," Nicholas said and once again. I find myself staring at Kairos.

That jerk. I think I can teach him some lessons with my newly acquired information.
