Adrian’s POV

“Since when do you smoke?”

I jumped at the voice, throwing the cigarette on the floor and stomping on it while trying to maintain an innocent expression as I turned to Briar.

“Briar, you are here,” I uttered a bit too cheerily. Selling myself out.

Briar gave me a once-over. “I didn’t realize you smoke.”

I chuckled awkwardly, patting my hair down to gather my thoughts. “It’s not a usual habit. I only do so when I am restless.”

“Exercise when you are restless, why smoke?”

“It k

Adrian’s POV“Remind me to never trust your words.” Briar fumed playfully at me. Even though my leg aches like crazy from that silly run, it was worth it. Getting that kiss just made my entire day. Her presence here most importantly. “It wasn’t that bad, you know?” I teased. “Mr Sterling, you are bleeding.” Stella noticed when she brought a glass of water. I stared down at the bandage around my calf. Briar hurried forward to check it before throwing me a stern gaze. “Can you see now, Adrian? I can’t believe you. You are just like your son. Didn't you say it doesn’t hurt anymore?” I bit back the wince making its way up my throat when she tried to check the bandage. “I thought it wouldn’t matter.” “I am sure you knew it would. Stella, please help with a first aid box.” She requested. “You need to focus on getting better, Adrian.” I snickered. “It’s just a slight wound.” “You know it isn’t. Your life is not just yours alone, you have a son that you are required to be there for.

Briar’s POVMy palms got sweaty as I stared at the house, questioning myself if I should be doing this. I couldn’t shake off the thought of Adrian being in an accident and still trying to show up for his son while I was being judgmental of him. All day, I kept rebuking myself for doing the same thing I questioned him for. When I got home, I mentioned it to Gina, and she admitted she knew. Thinking I knew and just didn’t want to meddle in it. I insisted I knew nothing about it and she directed me to check his texts again. It turns out I didn’t read any of it all the way through. He had mentioned being unwell in the first text about sending his driver. The follow-up messages had updates on his health status. I was always blinded by the content of the first few lines, so I ignored the rest of the texts. I feel so disappointed in myself. A knock on the car window, jolted me out of my thoughts. I pressed the button to reveal Eric smiling at me. “Hey, Briar. You won’t see him if you stay

Briar’s POV“I can’t believe this!” Rissa laughed her head off, holding onto her stomach in effect. She is so annoying. I didn’t reach out to her over the weekend to talk about Liam’s confession as I wanted to analyze it on my own. But the moment we arrived at work, I dragged her to the break room to ramble on to her. And now I am regretting my decision because she chose to find it funny. “I still don’t think there is anything funny in what I just said.” I hissed. Rissa sniffled, “What would you have me say? I can’t imagine how uncomfortable that chair must have been for you two. But I am impressed that he finally summoned the courage to express himself.” I furrowed my brow, “You knew?” She shrugged. “I think you were the only one who couldn’t see through him. Or you chose to ignore it.” Guilt tugged at my chest. “None of that matters now. What do I do to keep him from pushing too hard?” I asked. “Do nothing.” She said, stirring her cup of coffee. “Nothing?” “Yes, nothing.”

Briar’s POVI sucked my teeth at the message on my screen. Adrian is unbelievable. Why start something he can’t finish? When he said he wouldn’t be available to pick Knox up from school, I thought that could happen. And since he sent his driver with Knox regarding the sudden change, I didn’t mind. But it’s been three consecutive days and now he is saying his driver might be the one doing the drop-offs every day now. He should have just kept to himself if that was the case. So much talk of wanting to show me he has changed. I feel silly for believing him. I can’t have my son getting disappointed for no reason. I dialed his line waiting for it to get answered. But a lady answered. “Hello, I want to speak to Adrian,” I said. “Mr Sterling isn’t available right now. He will reach out later.” The lady replied. Before I could say anything else, she ended the call. I tightened my grip around my phone in annoyance. Such rude behavior. This is all Adrian’s fault. He is lucky it is the week

She sneered at me before rolling her eyes. “Do as you please.” I sniffed, dipping my hands in my pockets while staring at the skyline. Yesterday had been quite hectic. When I arrived at work this morning, things seemed smoother; I went to all my meetings and felt restless afterwards. Prompting me to come to the rooftop to ease the tension. I didn’t expect Briar to talk to me, seeing how she had ignored me this morning when I picked Knox up. “What

Adrian’s POV“How did the session go?” I said into the phone. There was a pause on the other end. “I can hear you breathing Ava.” “I am sworn to patient confidentiality. Why not ask her yourself?” She sounded stressed. “Dr. If she was going to tell me, I wouldn’t be having this conversation. So just give me something to work with.” I insisted, pacing the office back and forth. “She will get better.” “That’s all?” “Adrian!” She groaned. I could imagine the wrinkled brow on her forehead appearing. “Please, Ava. My life depends on this.” “That’s a cheap lie.” “I know you don’t believe me. All I am asking for is a chance. Please.” She went quiet for a while that I thought she had hung up. “I think we had a good time today. But it will be nice if she has people she can count on around her. She doesn’t seem to be the type to express herself too much.” She paused abruptly before letting out profanities. “Now that is a breach of contract and I should be punished for this. Get off my

Briar’s POV“Congratulations, Mrs. Sterling, you are six weeks pregnant.” The doctor’s words played repeatedly in my head making my toes curl in excitement. Briar’s POVI finally made up my mind. Atlanta to Inglewood by road will take me two days to reach. But it is the best option for me. I cannot afford to have my movement tracked by Adrian. Briar’s POVAs the rain thundered against the window, my chest tightened and tears flowed nonstop. It’s been two months of darkness in my life. Briar’s POV“Why can’t I visit?” Mum yelled from the other end of the phone. I held the phone away from my ear, cursing inwardly. “Mum, please. I am stressed.”“That is not the response I seek.” She snapped. Inhaling sharply, I rubbed at my growing belly gently with my free hand. It’s been over
