XXV: Know your place
As soon as the door closed, Cainan spoke, his tone rigid and unfriendly. “What are you doing here?” He finally asked, walking over to his desk adding, “I don’t remember calling you over so you shouldn’t even be here.”
Jasmin stared at him, remembering exactly why she was here and what it was he had done to her, and her cheeks heat. “You didn’t have to call me over, your actions called over.”
His brow rose. “What actions?”
She hissed and rolled her eyes. She couldn’t bite around the bush, she didn’t have the time to. So she cut straight to the reason she was here. “Please spare me the long games, Mr Inferno. You told me days ago that you were going to get back at me for going against your words and doing exactly what I had in mind. And you said when rules get broken, there are punishments and this is it. You’re punishing me for not doing what you told me five days ago.”

“Mr Inferno said he will come over tonight and so, wear this by then.” Felix, Cainan’s driver, said as he handed over the shopping bag to Jasmin, who silently collected it from his hand, looking as confused as ever. Jasmin closed the door and took the package into the bedroom to further reveal it and as she did, she saw the long red elegant gown and it took a lot of effort for Jasmin to not let her mouth drop in beholding it.

The third floor was the dining hall, the crowd of guest filled it up, perhaps even more than she had expected, and again she became unsure of herself. A majority of those present had dates as well, but Jasmin noticed their eyes on her and Cainan as soon as they stepped in. The men all wore black suits and red ties, matching Cainan’s and the ladies were all dressed in red with different designs and styles, and Jasmin felt astonished at some of the sophisticated styles she saw and silently thanked God that Cainan took the time to pick this elegant gown out for her. “Mr Inferno,” a grey-haired man called as he walked towards them. There was a woman about his age with her hands around his elbow. “Mr Doe,” Cainan replied in an acquainted tone and the men shook hands before turning to the woman. “I’m glad you could make it, Mrs Doe. She never loved the spotlight, she always did what she could to avoid it, but life had a twisted way of giving her the middle finger. A few partners of the company came up to meet them congratulating and appreciating Cainan’s leadership of the company for the last eight years, and after shaking hands and after holding a smile on her face for forty minutes straight, she grew weary. “Bored already?” she heard Cainan’s voice, and she snapped out of her zoning. Her mouth twitched to the side. “Yeah, never been so bored around so many rich people before.” she murmured and she meant it. The turn of events today was not what she expected, and she needed to breathe. She needed to be in her own space, and the bathroom felt like the only place she could do that. She entered and close the door before leaning against it. Her eyes flutter and she remained silent, mentally trying to clear her head of all the what-ifs playing around in it regarding Lisa and Xavier. “Did you see her?” a feminine voice asked with a disgusted tone of voice, causing jasmine’s eyes to snap open. “For a moment I thought that wasn’t Mr inferno talking.” “I know right, they can’t possibly be dating. She looks more like a leash if you ask me.” the second voice which had a higher pitch than the first added in agreement. Jasmin didn’t have to be told to know the worthless women at the other stall were gossiping about her and her relationship with Cainan, and just like that, her ‘alone time’ just flew out of the window. &n

The rest hour that passed before the end of the night, she felt the coldness in him, especially towards her; he masked it up as he interacted with the other guest and a few partners, but there was a change in him and she knew it. Cainan handed the farewell speech over to Daniel Howard, one of the top board members, and then the rest, bidding to the General manager Steve Jefferson. He took Jasmin’s hand and quietly led her away towards the awaiting Lexus, and they both got in before the driver drove them off. Jasmin knew this was one of his ways of shutting things away and never revisiting them. He was so fond of doing that, and she didn’t want him doing that to this as well. “I know you have little to no knowledge of art, but thank you for coming with me, Jasmin,” Lisa said as she held onto Jasmin’s hand and walked her through the security checkpoint at the art gallery. “It’s fine, besides this is far better than the plans I had for tonight, which was nothing,” she answered and they goggled together. Lisa had called a few hours ago, asking if she was free to come out with her. She didn’t mean to drag Lisa into her mess, but she had punched Faith without realising that the ladies with her were going to come to attack her along with Faith. A few days later, “And we are here,” Cainan announced as he offered Jasmin his hand and she took and stepped out of the car to see and appreciate the magnificent mansion before her. Well designed that it sent her into a state of awe. She had never been to his place, so when he invited her over for dinner, she accepted without hesitation because she wanted to know where he lived and also because the invitation was long overdue. Though they started dating months ago, Cainan had never found the perfect time to bring her over because of their work and other events surfacing. Today, however, was one day she closed early from work and Cainan thought it was the perfect time to bring her over to his humble abode so they could spend some quality time together.
