Sofia believed that love meant sacrifice. She gave her heart, her body, and even her future to the man she married. But the day she gave birth—bleeding, terrified, begging for help—she realized love was never supposed to hurt like this. Her baby was taken. Her cries were ignored. Her body felt like it was dying, and the only person who was supposed to protect her stood across the room… with another woman in his arms. Her mother-in-law tried to strangle her. Her husband told her to pack up or find her own way home—like she was nothing. But Sofia isn’t done. Not yet. She may be broken. She may be grieving. But she’s still breathing. And now, she has nothing left to lose.

Chapter 1

Chapter One.

THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED.

The walls of the hospital looked like it was moving, my sight blurry, my eyes closing gradually.

The nurses were running in opposite directions and the doctor was hitting my thighs.

My strength is failing me " Save me, lord". I whispered.

Please, Samuel ….Please, save my baby".

My hand reached for the man I called my husband, but he moved away before I could grab him, and tears streamed down my cheek.

Darkness threatened to overpower me, and I fought with all the strength in me to keep my eyelids open that cursed night. A night that the hurtful memories clung to me like breath.

Then like a wave, the pain hit me blowing me off balance.

It felt like a thousand needles being pierced into my body from the inside out. My whole body shivered, then the weight of something above my strength made me wail harder.

I pushed. Twice as hard as I did the first time.

I felt the baby's head….But I never saw what she looked like…I was deprived of the joy of holding her in my arms as a form of relief from the pain I felt, birthing her.

Alexander turned to the doctor, whispered a few words, I tried to read his lips, maybe get a hint or anything but darkness swallowed me, the voices gradually faded away.

I woke up hours later.

My body ached, and an IV) infusion was running through my arm.

My lips are swollen.

And the crib beside me…my baby wasn't there.

Mrs Ariel, my mother-in-law, sat at the end of the room — her face cold, unbothered.

A figure sat at the edge of the door.

"My baby".

"Where is my baby?". Those were the exact words that fell out of my mouth.

Her expression was stone-cold, arms crossed like a queen awaiting my disgrace.

"Where is she?". I tried to sit up, but my abdomen sent a sharp pain like a sharp knife cutting through already injured skin.

"You have always been bad luck". Ariel spat.

"Mother". I was startled, the hospital walls felt different, I was no longer in the theater, with a chronic smell oozing out.

"Oh save it _". Ariel snapped.

Ariel charged at me, strangling my neck, with me gasping for breath.

"Die already, you idiot ". Ariel kept on using force as tears poured freely from my eyes.

I tried to climb down from the bed but I felt a sharp pain in my abdomen causing me to scream amidst the struggle from the grip of my mother-in-law who was on a mission to destroy me.

My voice alerted the nurses as the door burst open. Nurses rushed in, Ariel released her grip and walked out, composed herself nothing happened.

Why was she doing this?

"Where is….where is my baby?". I asked the nurses gasping for breath.

The doctor entered, checking the IV line like I was some kind of sick patient under intense care.

"Please…" I begged, my voice hoarse. "Give me my baby…"

He paused.

And I saw that look.

The same one the police had when they told me my father had died.

That look that comes before your life changes forever.

"No," I said, shaking my head. "No, no, no—don't look at me like that!"

"I'm sorry, Mrs. Herdezn," he began, eyes dropping.

"No. No!" I ripped the IV from my arm and clutched his coat. "You said the baby was close! You told me to push!"

I pounded his chest. The nurses didn't stop me. He didn't stop me.

Until I collapsed, sobbing on the cold hospital floor.

My child. My baby.

Gone.

The doctor tried to comfort me but it was useless, I was broken….beyond repair.

"Why didn't you kill me alongside my baby?". I asked that night.

"Mrs Herdezn we tried our best…….I'm sorry".

"No, you didn't, you did nothing". My body trembled with grief as I resumed back to hitting his chest.

The early morning sickness, to the joy I felt when I was announced pregnant, it was all gone.

"I do not want the baby". Alexander had said the moment we left the hospital that fateful day.

"You're kidding right,". I rubbed my stomach smiling.

"I wish I were". Samuel said shutting the door on my unborn child, our unborn child.

"I want to see my baby," I whispered, my voice hoarse, my hands trembling.

"Mrs. Herdezn, you don't have to—" The nurse said.

"I am the mother of that child," I cut her off, my gaze hollow. "My last wish is to see my baby." My lips pale, heart restless.

The doctor hesitated, then signaled to the nurse. As they stepped out, the younger nurse stayed behind, holding me, gently trying to steady my shaking body.

Minutes passed.

Ariel reentered the room, her heels clicking, phone pressed to her ear like nothing had happened.

Then the nurse stepped in, cradling a tiny bundle.

Ariel froze mid-sentence. Her eyes locked on the baby — and twisted with disgust.

Ariel froze. Her expression twisted.

"And where are you taking that dead thing to?" she hissed, stepping in front of the nurse like a vulture.

"She requested to see her baby," the nurse said softly.

"Mother," I begged, my voice breaking. "Please"

"Take that thing away," Ariel snapped, waving her off like filth. A useless mother would birth a useless child."

"Mother, I want to see my baby!" My sobs broke the wall, voice broken, throat raw — but Ariel didn't flinch.

The nurse turned, carrying my baby out.

Ariel hissed and turned her back on me.

I tried to rush at the nurse as she walked out of the ward but the other one held me back as I wept profusely.

No one deserves to be treated like this.

"Mother….." I called out my heart filled with pain and guilt.

"Why?".

"Why do you hate me so much?".

"What did I ever do to deserve this!". I screamed at the top of my voice at the face of Ariel.

That was the first time I raised my voice at her despite all she had done to me.

Ariel never liked me, I tried everything but she was hell bent on hating me.

"You know I never liked you, I wonder what Samuel sees in you". Ariel hissed and continued with her call.

She tried dismissing me like always, like I was a maid in the hands of her and her son.

But that night I lost it, I looked at her, my heart filled with rage and disgust.

I was hurt, broken, and frustrated.

Even if the world turned it back on me, Mrs Ariel and her Alexander were supposed to stand solidly behind me, silly of me to think that.

"I loved you……," I sobbed, mucus dripping as I sank to my knees.

"I made sure that you lacked nothing."

"I went all out for you." I bit my already pale lips hard.

"Oh please, stop adding some importance to nothing". Ariel tossed.

"I went out of my way to love you and your son"

"And this is what I'm deserving of?".

"Leave already". Ariel said with no form of remorse, as the nurse hurriedly ran out.

"Have some manners and stop disgracing your entire family _ this is a hospital, not a damn marketplace". Ariel yelled.

Talking about disgraced, Ariel could be mistaken for a chief maid in my father's mansion, but I brought this upon myself.

"Disgrace?!" I asked her, in shock, it was coming from a woman I had picked from the street.

"Of course, that's who you are_ you had just one job but you failed woefully at it". Ariel spat.

"Mother_" but I was cut short before I could finish.

"Hold it right there, don't you ever call me that you fool". Ariel said disgusted as she walked to her seat.

I sat still for some minutes then I finally broke the silence.

"You disgust me."

I hadn't planned to say it — it just slipped out, raw and plain.

Ariel turned like lightning and slapped me across the face.

I held onto my cheek not in shock but in numbness.

"Have you lost your manners?" She yelled.

"Do not ever in your wildest dreams, talk to me in that tone". Ariel ordered.

"Do you understand?"

Fresh tears dripping down my face, this was the life I picked for myself.

"Answer me, do you understand?". Ariel yanked my ear.

"Yes_yes". I managed to say.

She tried to hit me again but stopped mid-air at the sound of a loud voice screaming her name.

"Mother enough!". The voice sliced through the room like lightning.
