The red laser dot locked squarely over Isabella’s heart for less than a tenth of a second before Nathan moved.

With terrifying, superhuman speed, Nathan tackled Isabella off her feet, his broad body completely enveloping hers as they hit the hardwood floor just as a high-velocity tungsten projectile shattered the triple-paned bulletproof glass of the penthouse balcony.

CRASH!

Spiders' webs of fractured glass exploded across the study. The high-altitude wind roared into the room, sending papers and holographic displays fluttering wildly into the darkness.

Nathan rolled, pinning Isabella beneath his heavy, muscular frame, his hands cradling the back of her head while his storm-grey eyes scanned the night sky through the shattered window frame.

"Miller! EMP protocol!" Nathan roared over the howling wind, his voice a low, terrifying growl of pure lethal fury.

Chief Miller slammed a heavy tactical briefcase onto the desk, firing a directional high-frequency electromagnetic pulse directly out toward the balcony.

The military drone’s optical lens sparked violently. Its twin rotors seized, and the black aircraft dropped like a stone, plummeting forty-five stories into the dark void of Fifth Avenue below.

Silently, the penthouse’s emergency steel blast shutters slammed down over the balcony window, sealing the room in heavy, reinforced security.

Silence returned to the study, punctuated only by the heavy, ragged breathing of the guards and the sharp smell of ozone.

Nathan didn't move off Isabella immediately. He remained hovering over her, his long fingers cupping her jaw, his eyes searching every inch of her face with intense, frantic obsession.

"Are you hurt?" Nathan demanded, his baritone trembling with a rare, terrifying edge of raw panic. "Isabella, look at me. Are you touched?"

Isabella looked up into his burning grey eyes, her heart hammering against her ribs, but her mind remained razor-sharp. She reached up, her hands sliding up his broad chest to cup his neck.

"I'm unhurt, Nathan," Isabella whispered softly, pulling his face down to press a fierce, reassuring kiss against his tense lips. "You caught me."

Nathan let out a long, ragged breath against her mouth, his forehead resting against hers as his fingers tangled in her dark hair, anchoring her against him with bruising tightness.

"He tried to take you in front of me," Nathan growled softly into her skin, his eyes turning to liquid ice. "That was his last mistake."

Evelyn Hayes stepped out from behind the reinforced mahogany desk, her face pale but her eyes fixed on the metal projectile lodged deep into the mahogany wall behind where Isabella had been standing.

"It wasn't a sniper round," Evelyn realized, stepping closer to inspect the metallic cylinder.

Nathan stood up, pulling Isabella gracefully to her feet by her waist, keeping one arm locked around her side. He walked over to the wall, yanking the heavy tungsten cylinder out of the wood with one hand.

At the tip of the cylinder sat a micro-hologram projector.

A small, high-definition projection flared to life in the palm of Nathan’s hand, displaying the face of Lord Victor de Valmont—the Grand Master.

"A primitive display of reach, my dear niece," Victor’s suave, aristocratically cruel voice echoed into the room. "Just a reminder that no glass tower in Manhattan is tall enough to keep you out of my sight. Tomorrow morning, at the United Nations General Assembly, the curtain rises on the final act."

The projection dissolved into red static and died.

Isabella looked at the blank projector in Nathan’s hand, a slow, radiant, terrifyingly confident smile spreading across her features.

"He's afraid, Nathan," Isabella said smoothly, her hazel eyes blazing with sovereign power as she adjusted the lapels of her silk blouse. "If he had the power to stop us, he wouldn't be firing warning shots through window frames. He knows tomorrow is his execution."

Nathan turned to her, his dark smirk returning, wild and lethal. He stepped into her space, pulling her flush against his chest, his lips brushing the curve of her jaw.

"The UN complex opens at eight AM," Nathan whispered, his deep voice carrying the absolute promise of war. "Miller has secured diplomatic credentials under the French state delegation. Tomorrow, Madam Chairwoman, we don't just take his grid..."

"We take his head," Isabella finished softly, sealing his vow with a lingering, passionate kiss under the emergency lights of the locked-down penthouse.

The battle lines were drawn. The final showdown in New York had arrived.
