Lena's POV

"Say that again."

Silence on the line. Then the voice repeated itself, slower this time, like it understood that I needed to hear it twice before my mind would accept it.

"Lena. It is me. I need you to not hang up."

I did not hang up.

I also did not speak for a full ten seconds which was apparently long enough for Darion to put his hand on my arm and for Julian to look up from his screen and read something in my face that made him go very still.

"You are dead," I said finally. My voi

Lena's POV"How many.""Two vehicles," Julian's voice came through the earpiece, sharp and clipped. "Coming in from the north road. Fast. They are not slowing down."Darion already had my arm. "We move now.""Soren," I said, turning.Soren was already at the back of the building, pulling open a door I had not seen, set into the stone wall behind a heavy shelf. Old. Deliberately hidden. The kind of exit that had been built by someone who always planned for the moment everything went wrong."There is a passage," Soren said. "It runs under the tree line. Comes up two hundred meters east of the compound road." Soren looked at me directly. "I built it when I built this place. Thirty years ago. Nobody knows it exists.""You built this place," I said."I built it for exactly this," Soren said. "Go."Darion went first, pulling me behind him, one hand locked around mine in a grip that was not asking for input. I did not argue because the sound of the vehicles outside had become visible through

My voice came out strange. Not shaking. Just strange, like it belonged to someone standing slightly outside the room."I am not dead," the voice said. "I have been careful. Which is different.""For a century," I said. "You have been careful for a century.""Yes.""Without telling me."A pause. "It was not safe to tell you. Telling you would have put you at risk and you were already carrying enough." Another pause, and something in the voice shifted, something older and more tired coming through the c

Lena's POV"Julian.""I know.""How long do we actually have."He looked up from the screen with the expression of someone about to say something I was not going to enjoy. "Petra's call went through at five forty two. If they mobilize immediately we have four hours. Maybe five if the international coordination takes longer than expected.""It will not take longer than expected," Darion said from across the room. "They have been running this operation for twelve years. The coordination is already done. They were waiting for a signal.""And Petra gave it to them," I said.Nobody answered because nobody needed to.I looked at the table. Carla's files, Petra's extracted information now sorted into Julian's system, the counter broadcast documentation we had spent forty eight hours building. Everything we had was right here and we had one night to make it impossible to bury."Tell me what we need," I said.Julian pulled the main screen toward him. "The fourteen country documentation needs t

Lena’s POV"Do not call ahead."Julian's hand was already moving toward his phone. He stopped."If they hear us coming they move," I said. "Or they destroy what we have left there." I kept driving, faster now, the pale dawn hardening around us. "We go in silence.""Lena." Darion's voice from the back seat had a quality I had not heard from him before. Not anger. Something underneath anger, something that sounded like it was costing him effort to keep contained. "What do you want to do when we get there?"I did not answer immediately. The road moved under us and the file sat open on Julian's lap with that name on the page and I was running the last weeks backward in my head with new eyes, hating how much of it was rearranging itself. The safehouse compromise. The Purge knew our location within hours of the broadcast. The timeline accelerated at exactly the moments we had moved. Not a leak. Not a trace.A person."I want the truth first," I said finally. "Before anything else. I want t

CARLA'S POV"You are staring at me again.""I am assessing the route.""The route is a straight road, Darion. You have looked at me four times in the last three minutes."He kept his eyes forward. "I am multitasking.""You are worried.""I am always worried when you walk into situations designed by people who want you gone." He glanced at me sideways, brief and burning. "That is not new information."The car moved through the early morning dark, Julian driving, me in the passenger seat, Darion directly behind me in the position he had chosen without discussion and was clearly not moving from. The route to the facility was forty minutes of empty road and tree cover and the specific silence of three people who had already said everything that needed saying and were now simply moving toward the thing.I watched the road and thought about Carla Voss. Eight months sitting on whatever she knew. Eight months of silence after walking away from something she had spent years building inside of.

"They want to meet."The room went completely still.Darion's hand left mine. Not pulling away, repositioning, the specific movement of someone whose entire body had just shifted into a different kind of attention."Say that again," he said."The Purge," I said. "They want a meeting. In person. Forty eight hours. Neutral location of their choosing." I set the phone down on the table slowly. "They said if I do not agree by midnight they will accelerate the operation to tomorrow morning."Julian was already at his laptop. "Who called?""Senior operative," I said. "Did not give a name. The line was clean, not traceable back to anything I recognize." I looked at Julian. "Can you identify it?""Give me twenty minutes," he said, and he was already working, fingers moving fast, the focused efficiency of someone shifting into a mode I had not seen from him before, sharper than his usual precision, something closer to urgency underneath it.Darion was looking at me. "You are not going.""I hav
