"What's wrong babe?" I raised my voice when I heard the sound of something falling from the bathroom. I was currently on bedrest on the advice of the doctor. Considering that in my sixth month of pregnancy, there were premature contractions. So I can't move freely for now. And hearing that loud and sudden sound made me panic. I was afraid something would happen to Charles, my husband. "Charlie?" This was the second call because he didn't answer. I was honestly starting to worry that he had fallen in the bathroom. It was because he hadn't slept well in the past few days. So hearing that, I felt like jumping out of bed. "Babe? If you're okay, please give me an answer," I said, trying to sound a little louder. This time there was the sound of the door opening. Fortunately after that, Charles' face came into view. "Oh thank Godness." I stroked my chest. "What happened inside? Did you fall?" "No," he replied, coldly. I furrowed my brows. "Then what was that about? Oh my bad, can you get me a drink? The water in the glass has run out." Charles didn't respond to my words but he walked over to get some water for me. He handed the glass back to me with a flat face. "There’s something important. I gotta go out for a while." "Where are you going? Who will help me to go to the bathroom if you go?" Honestly, I rarely whine like this. And usually when I whine, he would immediately persuade me. But this time something different happened, Charles didn't persuade me but instead he took the car keys and his thick coat. "Hold on while I'm gone. I'll be back before midnight comes." That was Charles' last answer. Because before I could say anything else, he was already out of our room, in a hurry. There was something strange about him. I could feel it. Actually, I've been aware since a few days ago. And it became clearer when he left right now. Charles became colder. His mind is not here even though his body is with me. I'm not sure the change in Charles is due to work, because he has a myriad of employees to help him with his duties. I'm pretty sure that it was caused by something on his phone. Because once he looks at his phone, he's bound to act up. And he took his phone to the bathroom earlier too. Oh I hate thinking negatively like this. But I also can't deny that I'm suspicious of my husband. Not even something as simple as applying oil from the doctor to my bulging belly did Charles. When he accompanied me to see the gynecologist, he was engrossed in his phone and smiling at something on it. I was ashamed of the doctor and of myself. Because the image I wanted of Charles after marriage was not like that. I imagined him to be a loving and caring man. Unfortunately that was slowly changing. There was no peck when he would go out. No warm hugs when he goes to bed. No more sweet words or talking to our daughter when we were relaxing. I don't know what made Charles change. But I really hope it's not because of another woman. I hope it's not an affair. *** Midnight has already come. Charles said he would come home, but he didn't. And I couldn't wait for him any longer. I had to get up and go to the bathroom by myself in the end. Holding on to the wall, I walked slowly towards the bathroom. Intending to pee and get some oil from the doctor. But just stepping into the bathroom, my foot stepped on something very slippery. Fortunately, I didn't fall because I managed to hold myself up. But what I found on the floor really shocked me. There, the oil I was looking for was lying with its broken container scattered all over the floor. There were no more drops left. There was no hope of Charles applying the oil to my belly. Turns out the loud noise I heard earlier did not come from Charles, but from this thing. But... why he lie? Oh my God. I hope it was just an accident. I hope he just forgot to tell me and when he comes back, he will apologize and explain what really happened. I hope Charles.... "Claire! Open the door!" Charles! He's home! I rushed out while holding my belly. I temporarily pushed aside my pain and fear to go to the main door. I just wanted to greet Charles, hug him, and then ask him a lot of questions. I wanted what was on my mind to be resolved right now. I didn't wanna go to bed curious or angry with him. So I want to…. My hands stopped in the air, my mouth opened wide, and my eyes bulged after opening the door and seeing Charles standing outside… with a woman. She was pregnant too. And Charles rubbed her bulging belly. Meanwhile, the woman seemed to be smiling happily. They looked like husband and wife. They were… very romantic. "Oh Chaz, the door is open," the woman said spoiledly. A second later Charles lowered his hand from that woman. His body straightened while looking at me with slightly rounded eyes. "Claire, what took you so long? Eva has been waiting outside for too long. It's not good for her health and the baby." "Eva?" I asked in confusion. Charles suddenly wrapped his arms around her waist. "Yes, she's an old best friend of mine. She'll be staying here for a few days."CLAIRE"Damn. I hate looking weak in front of others. Especially in front of a woman who's weaker than me."Eva's words kept ringing in my head until now. Until I met Matthew again.Honestly, I was shocked by her confession. I thought she pursued Charles because of wealth, but love? Isn't that too naive? For someone like Eva who lacks nothing, a complete family with very stable finances, it should be enough to make her realize to choose better than Charles.Yes, although I've also done the same thing, foolishly falling in love, but if I'm in her position who doesn't lack anything, I open my eyes wide. It's better to choose another man than Charles. Honestly. But beyond that, I've already said my second request and Eva agreed to it. So whatever happens beyond that, I'll try to ignore it. Even if Eva brings her personal problems into our partnership. If Eva brings up her personal problems, I'll just take them as entertainment. They don't matter to me anymore if it's not my client an
CLAIRE“How did you know?” Eva’s voice trembled. I bit back my smile. I knew even more than that. I did some digging into Eva’s background after I returned home from my miscarriage treatment. The reason was that I didn’t believe she was just Charles’s best friend.Especially since, during the time Charles and I were together, I never knew Eva existed. So I was really curious to find out everything about her. That’s when I discovered the fact that Eva was the daughter of a murderer. Fifteen years ago, Eva’s father, a wealthy man, founded a new real estate company. The company was a huge success. But sadly, that wealth wasn’t gained in a legitimate way. He acquired it through fraud and by murdering his business partner, who had co-founded the company with him. Consequently, all the assets were seized by him and Margot’s family. There wasn’t much news about it. In fact, there was almost none. And I stumbled upon it by accident. At the time, I was digging deep online until I finally
CLAIRE“Hey, Claire! I’m here to buy you.”Shhh, here she is again. Who else but Eva? Even without looking, I already knew whose voice was behind me. “Oh, sorry—I mean, I’m here to buy your design.” She placed the check right in front of my face. “See, Charles gives me anything I want. I don’t know why it’s different with you.”The boutique was packed right now. And Eva seemed intentional to come during a rush hour. Because she did the same thing yesterday. That’s why I didn’t snap at her. I chose to take a deep breath first, then face Eva. I turned slowly with a smile I’d carefully crafted. I leaned in close so only she could hear me. “Maybe because you’re for sale. Just like I said yesterday.”“I’m sorry, but if that’s true, I don’t care anymore. What matters to me is… that I can buy you for my business.” She looked me up and down. “It’s so much fun having you under my thumb.”I pointed my hand at the 3 o’clock position. “Please give this to the staff over there for payment. After
CLAIRE“Oh my God! Are you serious? I heard you right, didn’t I?”Matthew’s smile widened. This time he even shook his head. “I’m not lying, Claire. Everything’s settled. And you’ll have your rights back. You can be happy with whoever you want after this.”I had no idea how to process this good news, so all I could do was jump up and throw my arms around Matthew’s neck. Meanwhile, Matthew wrapped both his arms around my waist, making sure I wouldn’t fall. “Your suffering with Charles will soon be over, Claire,” he whispered softly in my ear. That moved me deeply. Honestly, I’m so happy because I finally no longer have to lower my self-respect for a man who can’t appreciate me. And what still surprises me to this very moment is that all of this happened because of Matthew’s help! The man I ignored for the sake of my soon-to-be ex-husband. That’s why, as a way of showing my appreciation, despite the agreement that I would marry him, I gave him a quick kiss on the cheek. “Thank you
CLAIRENo doubt what Eva did caught everyone’s attention. In an instant, everyone—from customers to employees—looked over at us. Perfect. Now we’re the center of attention without me having to lift a finger. Why do I think this is a good thing? Because I can embarrass Eva without having to start it myself. I can teach her that if you dare to act, you must dare to take responsibility.I looked at the checks scattered on the floor. I kicked aside the one covering my foot with my other shoe.“I could even buy everything in this boutique, including you!” Eva pointed a finger at my face.I just smiled sweetly as I stepped on the check near me. “I thought you’d throw money at me. No cash, huh? Well, guess the rumors about Charles going bankrupt are true.”“What? I’ve never heard those rumors. Don’t talk nonsense! Just tell me your price!” Eva’s voice grew louder as her anger flared up. She picked up all the checks and clenched them into a fist. She then stood up again and tapped them aga
CLAIREHonestly, I couldn't stop smiling ever since I got out of Matthew's car. Whether it was because I was desperately craving affection or simply because he was so sweet, those words kept echoing in my head. It was like a broken record that kept playing—unable to be stopped, yet too precious to throw away. I felt seen and valued for who I truly am. I didn’t have to be someone else to earn love. And nothing felt more relieving than that.I think Matthew is the cure I’ve been searching for—and he’s meant for me. The only question is how I’ll keep him from turning into poison down the road.Oh, the feeling…“The styles in this album do not suit me. I want a custom design made for my maternity photos.”My steps halted on the last stair when I heard that voice. My eyes fell on the woman currently standing at the door of the VVIP room. Her voice boomed, unlike when she was at home. She is the woman who is so precious to Charles right now, Eva.Oh God, what else does that woman want to
CLAIREAs I opened my eyes, I saw Matthew holding Charles' hand in the air. His eagle-sharp eyes stared at Charles like his prey. "I can just as easily destroy Ashford Group as destroy your last name."Charles laughed. He then looked at me. That soft looking face, anyone if they saw it, would defin
CLAIREHe was Matthew Alaric Kingsley, the man I had rejected in high school because I loved Charles more back then. And now, he reappeared. Unbidden and suddenly in front of me, helping me."What's going on with you, Claire?"That deep voice entered my ears like a high-speed train that unceremonio
CLAIREI tried to act normal but my feelings couldn't lie. I loved Charles and that's why it hurt so much to see him prioritize his best friend over his own wife. I still remember what Charles said, that his best friend in his life was very important. But I never thought that the best friend he
CLAIREWait, wait, wait. Didn't I hear him wrong? Charles is bringing his pregnant best friend home? To our home? And she even has a special nickname for him? Chaz?“I don't know if you have a female best friend, Charlie,” I said.“Now you know,” answered Charles."This isn't right, Charlie," I s
