Chapter Seventy Five: Fragile

“Who…who are you?”

The words didn’t just echo in Caesar’s mind. They stabbed straight through his heart and left a hole.

He gripped Julian’s shoulders, his fingers digging in. “Julian, look at me. Don’t you remember me?”

For a terrifying second, Julian just stared back. Blank. Lost. A stranger in his lover’s eyes.

Then Julian’s face twisted.

He winced, a sharp gasp escaping his lips as his hands flew to his temples, fingers tangling in his hair.

He squeezed his eyes shut, a low groan of pure pain ripping from his throat.

Caesar’s own breath stopped. He was losing him all over again.

But then Julian’s eyes opened. Slowly. The fog was gone, replaced by a familiar, weary light.

They focused on Caesar’s face…on the devastation written there…and a flicker of recognition sparked, followed by a soft, fond exasperation.

“Caesar…” Julian whispered, his voice thin but his smile so fragile and real it made Caesar’s chest ache. “Why do you look like you’ve seen a

Chapter Eighty: The UltimatumThe heavy oak doors didn’t just open. They exploded inward, slamming against the walls with a sound like a gunshot. Caesar didn’t walk in, he invaded the room. He was a storm in a tailored suit, his face carved from ice and fury. His eyes, dark and burning, swept the room, dismissing the guards, everything but the man behind the desk.“Where is he?”His voice was low. Too low. It was the quiet, deadly hum of a blade being unsheathed.Don Alessandro didn’t even flinch. He sat behind his mountain of a desk, swirling amber brandy in a crystal glass. He looked up, and a slow, triumphant smirk spread across his face. It was the smile of a spider watching the fly finally hit the web.“Cesare. My son.” The words were a mockery of warmth. “It’s been too long. I see it only takes stealing your pretty songbird to get you back in the cage.” A low, grating laugh followed.Caesar took a step forward. The guards along the walls shifted, hands moving toward weapons.

Chapter Seventy Nine: Aftermath and The CollapseJulian stood by the hospital window, but he wasn’t really looking out. His reflection in the glass was a ghost…pale, tired, haunted. Behind him, the real reason for his visit lay in the bed.Sebastian was perfectly still, whiter than the sheets, lost in a forest of tubes and wires. The only signs of life were the slow, stubborn blip on the heart monitor and the mechanical whoosh-hiss of the ventilator breathing for him.Aiden was in his usual chair, pulled so close his knees touched the bed. He held Sebastian’s limp hand in both of his, talking in a low, steady stream. “...and the rain finally stopped. Your cactus might actually get some sun. You’d like that, right? I even bought that stupid show you like on Blu-ray. We can binge it when you get bored of napping.”It was a ritual. A prayer. Every time Julian came, he found Aiden like this, weaving a net of everyday words to try and pull Sebastian back to the world of the living.Juli

Chapter Seventy Eight: Too Early For That Victory. Ryan’s eyes bulged, the horror in them sharp and real. His throat was raw from the scream he’d just let out…a scream of pure, betrayed fury. He stumbled back, clawing at his neck where the needle had gone in. But it was too late. The fast-acting poison in his own syringe was already working, turning his muscles to stone. His legs gave out. He slumped hard against a crate, his body going rigid. His mouth worked, trying to form words, to curse them, to beg, but only a choked, wet gurgle came out. He was awake and aware but he was utterly, completely helpless.Sebastian stood over him, a cold, satisfied smirk on his face. No words were needed. Ryan could see it all now…the lies, the setup, how completely he’d been played.Julian got to his feet. He brushed the warehouse dust from his clothes, then wiped the theatrical smear of fake blood from his temple. He looked down at Ryan, and there was no pity in his eyes. None. Only a deep,

Chapter Seventy-Seven: The Trap and Crack in Time. Sebastian pushed the door open way past midnight, the click echoing too loud in the quiet apartment. His knuckles were split and bleeding, dried blood crusted under his nails, dark circles carved deep under his eyes like he hadn’t slept in days. He looked like hell, felt like it too, every step heavy with secrets he couldn’t say out loud. Aiden was waiting up again, leaning against the kitchen counter with a mug gone cold in his hands. Worry was written all over his face, the same worry that never left anymore. He didn’t ask about the bruises…he’d stopped asking weeks ago because Sebastian never gave real answers, just shrugs and half-smiles that hurt more than lies. Instead, Aiden’s voice came out soft, careful. “Are you really alright?”Sebastian didn’t answer with words. The weight in his chest was too heavy, guilt and fear choking him. He crossed the room in three strides, cupped Aiden’s face with those bloody hands, an

Chapter Seventy Six: The Clock is TickingThe air in the hospital room was so thick with secrets it was hard to breathe. Julian could feel it. He sat propped up against the pillows, forcing a smile, teasing Peter about some stupid old memory. But every laugh felt hollow.Every move he made was watched. When he shifted to reach for his water cup, Caesar’s hand was already there, wrapping his fingers around it first. When he tried to sit up a little straighter, wincing at the ache in his ribs, Enzo was there in a second, nervously fluffing and rearranging his pillows. They were treating him like a bomb about to go off.“Will you all stop hovering?” Julian finally snapped, the cheerful mask cracking. “I can breathe on my own, you know.”Caesar moved closer, his smile tight. “Just… take it easy, my love. You’re just recovering.”“Take it easy? While they’re still out there? No.” The anger felt good. Better than the suffocating worry in their eyes. “Ever since I woke up, you all look at
