Caly and her mom walked into the study, she loved it here, it always smelt of cedar and leather. The walls were covered in leather-bound books on shelves, many of the books were original first-edition copies. Her father collected books, so she developed a love for them, just like him. Many days, she could be found here curled up in the large bay window that looked out over the gardens, reading.  She always enjoyed sitting and reading while her dad worked at the large desk in the middle of the room. Her mom walked over to the desk and pulled a pink box out of one of the drawers. She handed it to Caly, “Happy Birthday, sweetheart.” Caly took the box and opened it, she pulled out a long white-gold chain with a locket at the end of it. Engraved on the locket was a very detailed, and very beautiful rose. She gently opened the clasp and inside were two pictures, one was of her father and brothers and the other was a picture of just her and her mother when she was a baby. “Oh, Mama, it’s beautiful! I love it so much. Will you help me put it on?” She looked up at her mother and saw the tears in her eyes. “What’s wrong?”

As her mother helped her put on the necklace, she said, “Nothing baby, you’re just so grown up. What happened to my baby girl?”

“Mama, I’m still me, just getting older.”

“Did you give it to her yet Cecily?” her father asked as he came back into the study. He noticed the tears in his wife’s eyes. “Is everything alright in here?”

“Yes, honey, our baby girl is just growing up into a beautiful young lady.”

“Nah, she will always be our baby girl. Here, let me take a quick picture of two of the most important ladies in my life and we can add it to the locket later. Are you two ready? Ok? One, two, three, cheese!” he pulled out his phone and snapped the photo that would capture this moment forever. They stood next to each other and smiled happily, not realizing this would be the last picture they would ever take together. “Come on pumpkin, you owe me a dance,” her father said, and took her hand leading her into the ballroom.

After Calypso’s dance with her father, she went over to Naomi who was still surrounded by boys and pulled her outside to the gardens. She had to tell her all about the afternoon and Travis’s gift and note. Naomi was so excited for her friend, “I can’t believe he likes you like you like him! I am so happy for you Cal! Have you seen him yet tonight?”

“No, I haven’t,” --she said sadly, -- “what if he doesn’t show, Naomi?”

“I don’t think you will have to worry about that,” she said with a big smile on her face and pointed over Calypso’s shoulder. “Look.” Caly turned around and as soon as she did, she saw Travis at the entrance to the ballroom with Eli. She smiled ecstatically. He looked like he was looking for someone, then she saw Eli point her out to him, smiling. She noticed that Travis took a deep breath and began to walk towards her across the ballroom. “Go on, what are you waiting for?” Naomi said, giving her a little push back into the ballroom from the gardens. She walked slowly towards him, and they met in the middle of the ballroom.

“Can I um, uh, have this dance?” Travis asked her nervously.

“Of course!” she said enthusiastically. They began to slow dance. Caly felt like she was on cloud nine. He was dressed in a white long-sleeved shirt, with the top buttons unbuttoned and a pair of black slacks, as well as black dress shoes. His hair was slicked back, but a few strands fell over his forehead brushing his eyebrow. She looked up into his blue eyes and got lost in them. She couldn’t believe she was here dancing with him. He looked deep into her eyes, and everything seemed right in the world, this was where she was supposed to be, in his arms for the rest of her life. The song ended and an upbeat one came on, the two of them just kept dancing together, it was like they were the only two people in the world. After about the third or fourth song, Caly had to take a break. “I’m going to go get something to drink and a quick snack from the tables, do you want anything?” she asked him.

“Nope, I have to go talk to Eli for a second.”

“Why?”

“To thank him for convincing me to come tonight, I was thinking about not coming.”

“How come?”

“Because I was embarrassed earlier in the hallway, and I didn’t think you liked me like that. So, Eli came and hunted me down and told me he was cool with us seeing each other and that he just wanted us to be happy. He also happened to tell me you liked your gift and liked me too.”

“I did, and I do,” she said shyly, but confidently.

“Good! I’ll see you in a few minutes, we have more dancing to do,” he smiled broadly, kissed her on her cheek and walked over to Eli. Caly was shocked that he showed such a bold public display of affection towards her, but she was excited at the same time, she placed her hand on her cheek in awe, as he walked away. She raced towards Naomi who was near the tables of food, full of glee and giddiness. “Oh my gosh Naomi, did you see that?”

“See what?” Ryker asked as he walked up to them.

“Nothing,” responded Caly trying to play it cool,  but her and Naomi giggled, unable to control themselves. She noticed Ryker’s fake smile that didn’t reach his eyes, they were still shadowed by whatever happened to him earlier.

“Have you seen Eli anywhere?” Caly’s question interrupted Seraphina's thoughts.“No, not since this morning when your father sent him and Derrick to go and check the northern perimeter of the territory.”“Why? Is something wrong?” Caly asked worriedly.“No, no, no,” Seraphina lied, “it’s just routine,” she tried to respond convincingly. She was a terrible liar, Seraphina thought to herself. I can’t tell her there was another incident, that he, Derrick, Gavin, and Jaxson went to investigate. Otherwise she would want to go too, and put herself in danger while investigating it. Gavin made me promise not to say anything to Caly about the small attacks around the territory, although this recent attack was much bigger than the rest, and it made her very uneasy. Caly is stubborn just like him and would want to get involved in the possible fight, if there was one. Right now, was not the

Calypso scanned the yard, the walls, the training area, and the gardens looking for her brother Eli, who always helped her get through the day, but he was nowhere to be found. “That’s strange,” she thought, “he’s usually nearby, ready to help me if I have a panic attack.”“How are you doing today, sweety?” came Seraphina’s voice from behind her. Caly spun around and saw a very pregnant Seraphina waddling towards her, she was due any day now. It still bothered Calypso knowing that the baby would be her new step-sibling, since her father and Aunt got married last year. Caly knows they were only related through marriage, and once her mother died that was severed, but it still bothered her that her aunt is now her step-mother. She still catches herself calling her aunt at times. Part of her is glad that they are finally happy after the loss of her mother. She thought about what her best friend Naomi said

  • The Everwood Pack: Calypso   Chapter 20: Present Day

Present day…For six years she hasn’t wanted anything to do with it at all. Not the celebrations nor the parties, the joy, the excitement, the gifts, not even the birthday wishes, none of it. For her, this day just brought sorrow, pain, and an overwhelming sense of grief and guilt. A birthday is supposed to be one of the best days of the year. For Calypso Everwood, since she was twelve years old, it is one of the worst days every year. Today she turns eighteen, but nothing has changed for her, the day hasn’t gotten any better over the years, it has remained the same. All the hurt and pain is still there consuming her, she still has nightmares, still feels the grief and pain of her loss, as well as guilty as hell about it. Everyone tells her it’s not her fault that her mother died, they say she did everything she could, she even saved her brother Garrett’s life at the time. Despite what everyone tells her, she still

She raced back towards the house, she was almost to the main gardens when a very large, and very powerful dark brown wolf attacked her mother from the right flank, taking her down immediately, with a high pitched whine. The wolf opened his large jaws, ready to chomp down on her mother’s neck. Caly didn’t know what to do, she turned around, and jumped at the wolf on top of her mother. As she jumped, she changed into a beautiful all white wolf with bright blue eyes. She knocked the dark brown wolf off of her mother with all her body weight and scratched it across it’s left eye. The wolf howled in pain and backed up. She then went back to her mother and stood over her protecting her. She lay unmoving on the ground. Caly didn’t know what to do so she howled out for help, at the same time she reached out to Ryker through the mind link. “Ryker! Shadow! Someone, anyone help, my mom is hurt badly, she is not moving.” Caly watched as

  • The Everwood Pack: Calypso   Chapter 19

Calypso had never run so hard in her entire life, when she reached the main house, she transformed back into her human form and searched frantically for Dr. Santos the pack doctor. Each pack has their own doctor who treats the whole pack, some have more than one. If anyone from the pack went to a human doctor there would be too many questions, so it was safer to have their own. She saw Eli and Travis talking together, in the ballroom, she ran up to them out of breath. “Have either of you seen Dr. Santos? It’s an emergency.”“Caly, what’s wrong? You have blood on the side of your head,” Eli said.“And the back,” Travis noted, concerned.“I’ll tell you on the way, I need Dr. Santos, now.”“I think I saw him in the hallway talking to Carmen Blackthorn,” her Aunt Seraphina said, overhearing the urgency in her voice. Caly rushed out to the hallway and found Dr. Santos with Mrs. Blackthorn, j

Within a matter of seconds, five more wolves jumped out of the woods. She recognized the wolves as her brothers, Jaxson, Garrett, and Braxton, as well as Bastian, and finally her mom as they surrounded her and Ryker, preparing for a fight. All at once the men that had appeared changed into wolves and a bloody chaotic fight broke out. The sounds of snapping, snarling, and growling filled the woods, and Calypso's ears. The odds were not in their favor, it was eight Rogue Hunter’s against the six of them. Caly wished more than anything that she would change now so that she could help, but it didn’t happen. Both her mother and Ryker were standing over her, their backs to each other protecting her from both sides. Jaxson, Bastian, Garrett, and Braxton were fighting the rest as best they could. Suddenly, Caly could hear the mind linked conversations between everyone, it was all jumbled and she couldn’t make out who was talking but she just listened.“There are too many of the
