“Lie to me again,” Arthur whispered.

He stepped so close that my back hit the wall. I locked my jaw and held my breath. I couldn’t say a word. If I opened my mouth, he’d hear the tremble in my voice, and he’d know.

His fingers came up, taking my chin in a tight grip and tilting my face up. His eyes moved over my features. The way he stared made my skin crawl. It felt like he was looking straight through my skull, reading every hidden thought I was trying to bury. A cold spike of terror ran down my back.

Slowly, his hand shifted. His fingers hovered barely an inch over my shoulder without touching me. He leaned in, his nose brushing near my skin as he took a short, sharp breath.

The warmth of him pressed against my chest. My nipples hardened… a response I couldn’t control.

A cold chill hit my spine.

He knew. He saw the lie sitting right there on my face, and he was choosing not to call it out. Not yet.

I froze, unable to move.

“My parents are coming,” Arthur said, his voice dropping into a low, quiet threat. “They’ll be staying here for a few days. You had better be on your best behavior, Sophie.”

Before I could react, the sudden, harsh ring of his phone broke the silence.

Arthur pulled back instantly, reaching into his pocket. He checked the screen and went dead still. Whatever he saw was urgent. Without another word, he turned and hurried out, heading straight down the hall toward his study.

He was in such a hurry that the heavy bedroom door didn’t latch. It stayed slightly open, leaving a thin crack of light from the dimly lit hallway.

He had forgotten to lock it.

My heart thudded against my ribs like a trapped bird. I waited three long seconds, listening to his fast steps fade down the corridor. This was my chance. I needed to see how many guards were posted in the main hallway after dark and map out a real exit path.

Barefoot, I crept out into the hallway, keeping low in the dark as I moved along the wall. My heart wouldn’t stop hammering. Somewhere below, a door closed. I froze. Footsteps echoed, then faded.

Up ahead, warm light spilled out onto the floor from the cracked double doors of Arthur’s study. I needed to know if he was occupied so I could move without getting caught.

I reached the doorway and pressed close to the frame, peeking inside.

Arthur stood by his desk with his back to the door. His shoulders weren't tense… his whole body looked relaxed. And his voice was soft, low… dripping with a warmth I’d never heard from him before.

“I know,” he murmured into the phone, his tone gentle. “I miss you too. Just give me a few days to handle my father, baby.”

Baby. Hearing him say that word made my stomach drop.

My chest tightened. There was no doubt who was on the line. Hearing him speak to my sister like that… giving her the softness he never gave me… hit harder than any cruelty. He was capable of being human. Just not with me.

He leaned against the desk, his free hand running through his hair. An easy, genuine laugh slipped from his lips. I had never heard him sound so gentle.

My fingers curled into fists.

Before I could pull back, a heavy palm clamped hard over my mouth, suffocating my gasp. An arm snatched my waist, yanking me into the darkness until my back hit a broad, solid chest.

An icy voice whispered right against my ear:

“You shouldn’t be wandering in the dark.”

  • The Forced Bride   Elena Returns

I spent most of the night thinking about Elena’s return. She had been away for months, but her absence had never changed what existed between her and Arthur. Even while I lived under the same roof as my husband, I knew there was another woman he wanted, and that woman was coming home.By the following morning, Victoria was already busy preparing for her daughter’s arrival. When I came downstairs, she was speaking to one of the house staff about Elena’s bedroom, making sure everything was in place before Elena arrived.“Sophie, could you help me upstairs?” she asked when she noticed me. “I want Elena’s room ready before she gets here.”I followed her, helping to straighten the bedcovers, arrange the cushions, and put a few things back where Victoria wanted them. She seemed unusually cheerful, talking about how much she had missed Elena and how glad she was that her daughter would finally be home again. I listened without saying much, although I couldn’t help wondering how different thi

  • The Forced Bride   A Chance to Be Seen

I became careful about where I went and how long I stayed there. When they finally left, I thought the house might become easier to live in.It didn’t.Arthur returned from his trip, and life settled into the same miserable routine. He continued treating me like an obligation he had been forced to accept, while expecting me to behave like a devoted wife whenever other people were watching. Julian was still around often enough to remind me that I couldn’t let my guard down.I kept my head down and did what I had to do.Months passed that way.My sketchbook remained hidden beneath a loose board at the back of my wardrobe. I took it out whenever I found a moment alone, careful to put it away bef

  • The Forced Bride   A Father’s Kind of Cruelty

By the time I left my bedroom that morning, I had already decided that Julian would not get what he wanted. His threat still hung over me, but I wasn’t going to spend the rest of my life obeying him. I would find another way off the estate, even if it meant waiting for the right opportunity. The house was unusually busy. Staff hurried through the hallways carrying fresh flowers, polished silverware and neatly folded linens. Arthur’s parents were arriving, and everyone seemed determined to make sure the house was perfect before they stepped through the door.A housekeeper handed me a list of tasks. I was expected to check the guest rooms, arrange fresh towels and help prepare the dining room. I took the list without arguing. I had learned that even the smallest refusal could become another reason to make my day miserable.By late morning, a car pulled into the driveway. I was carrying a tray of glasses through the entrance hall when the front door opened.Arthur entered first, followed

At breakfast the following morning, I had recognized his voice when Arthur introduced him as his cousin. Now he was standing behind me again, with one arm wrapped around my waist and his palm pressed firmly over my mouth.I grabbed his hand and tried to pull it away, but he tightened his hold, and the pressure forced my lips against my teeth until I tasted blood inside my cheek.“Don’t make a sound,” he whispered, his breath touching my ear.My eyes darted toward the study, where Arthur was still on the phone, completely unaware of what was happening a few steps away. The figure leaned over the bed. Cold air brushed my face, but the scent that came with it was wrong. Not Arthur's sharp cologne. Something softer. Sandalwood mixed with faint tobacco. A warm voice spoke near my ear, low and calm. "Don't scream." I kept still, my lungs locking in my chest. The man studied my face in the dark like he was examining something rare he had already decided to keep. I could hear the dark smile lingering in his breathing. Then he straightened, turned, and left the way he came. The door closed without a sound. I did not move until the house settled completely back into silence. Sitting up, I pulled the sheet tight against my chest and stared at the dark doorway. Every tiny creak of the floorboards made my stomach turn. He had walked into a locked room, stood over me in the dark, and vanished into the shadows like a ghost. I stayed awake until dawn, watching that door with my mind racing. By first light, the heavy lock on the corridor door clicked from th
