Chapter 35

Sabine

I was surprised to see my father waiting for us at the lake, where the wagons were still parked. He had already set the fire and placed animal skins around it. It reminded me of the time when I was small and grandpa made all the kids gather around him and listen to his stories.

The dancing flames lit my father’s face and I was able to see sadness present. I didn’t know what to feel or think. A part of me was mad that they didn’t tell me the truth earlier while the other had questions about who I was.

“Sabine,” he whispered softly, when we approached him. “You look beautiful” his words made me smile. I think it was the first time he said something like this.

“Let’s gather around the fire. We can talk while we are waiting for the meat to cook.” Dad pointed to the skewers that were already placed in the fire.
