View MoreI had never drunk this much in my life.
I had been sitting at that bar for hours, waiting for the pain in my chest to ease. It didn't. So I kept ordering shots and checking my phone, as if Jack might text to say it had all been a mistake.
He wouldn't. He was too busy with his new play doll.I didn't know which hurt more, that I had shown up late to my interview and probably lost the job. Or that the man I loved had been sleeping with someone else the whole time.
"I'm going to forget that jerk," I muttered. "Shit. All I need is a distraction."
And as if the heavens had heard my prayer, someone slid onto the stool beside mine.
He ordered the exact same drink.
I glanced at him. He glanced back. My face heated instantly, and I looked away. When his drink arrived, he downed it in one smooth motion."Another," he told the bartender. Three glasses later, he finally turned to me.
"Why is a beautiful woman like you sitting here alone, looking like the world just ended?" I studied him carefully. His sleeves were rolled up. His tie hung loose, the top button of his shirt undone. His strong hands wrapped around the glass, veins faintly visible beneath his skin. He looked like he had stepped out of a magazine shoot and straight into my worst decision of the night. "Does it matter?" I asked."It might."
I gave a small, humorless laugh. "Let's just say I misjudged someone."
"Boyfriend?" Ex. The word burned more than the alcohol. "Something like that." "He cheated," he said simply. "Men disappoint in predictable ways." "You sound experienced." He smirked faintly. "I observe patterns." The bar suddenly felt smaller. Warmer. He leaned closer, not touching me, just close enough for me to feel the heat of him. "You don't look like someone who begs for love," he said, his voice low."So whatever he did, it wasn't because you weren't enough."
My breath hitched. "Why do you care?" He took a slow sip, his eyes never leaving mine. "I don't." Jack's voice echoed in my head. You're too soft. Too emotional. Too much. I clenched my jaw. "I just needed tonight. To forget." "And what does forgetting look like to you?" The question wasn't innocent. Neither was the way he asked it. "Something reckless." Silence. Heavy. Charged."That's dangerous," he said.
"I know." "And you're sure you won't regret it?" I hesitated. Would I? Probably. But right now, the hurt felt worse than any regret could. "I just want to feel something else," I said honestly. Something shifted in his face. Not softer, but deeper. More serious. He pulled his tie off completely and placed it on the counter, slowly, as if every movement was intentional. My stomach tightened. "What's your name?" he asked. Giving your name makes things real. "Aria," I lied. He nodded slowly, as if testing how it sounded."Aria."
"And you?" "Daniel." Something told me that wasn't the full story. I didn't push. The bartender cleared his throat. "Last call in twenty." Daniel stood and adjusted his cufflinks. Even rumpled, he looked powerful. Controlled. "You coming?" It wasn't a question. It was an invitation. I hesitated for exactly three seconds. Then I stood. The night air outside was cooler, sobering. City lights shimmered in the puddles along the pavement.A sleek black car waited by the curb, expensive and impossibly polished.
Of course it was. Just like him. He opened the passenger door, and I paused. This is the part where you decide who you are. The girl who cries over Jack, or the girl who stops letting people break her. "You can say no," Daniel said quietly. "I won't stop you." He meant it. And somehow, that made it more tempting. I looked up at him, really looked this time. Sharp features. A controlled expression. Eyes that revealed very little and watched everything. Jack was chaos. This man was precision. Which made choosing him even more dangerous. "I'm not the type for random mistakes," I said softly. His eyes darkened. "No. You're not." "But tonight," I continued, "I might make an exception." The corner of his mouth lifted, just barely. Not a grin. Not victory. Something quieter. Something knowing. He stepped aside, and this time, I didn't hesitate. I slid into the car. The door shut softly behind me. This isn't just a distraction, I thought. This feels like the beginning of something I can't control. And that terrified me. Neither of us spoke on the drive. The city lights blurred into streaks of gold and white, and my head felt heavy and warm. Sober me would never have gotten into a stranger's car. But right now, everything felt distant. The heartbreak. The humiliation. Jack. You just need tonight. Just tonight. When the car stopped and I tried to step out, my heel twisted. I stumbled, and strong arms caught my waist. It was the first time he had touched me. He didn't ask. He simply lifted me, one arm under my knees, the other around my back. "Last chance," he murmured. "Walk away if you want." Why did he keep giving me that option? Maybe that was exactly why I stayed. "Do you think I can walk in this state?" I asked. He didn't move. His eyes searched mine for hesitation. "I'm not running," I whispered. He carried me across the quiet parking lot toward a tall glass building glowing against the night sky. A hotel. Of course. The elevator ride felt like a dream. Soft lights. His steady heartbeat under my cheek. The faint scent of his cologne wrapping around me. This is insane. But I didn't tell him to stop. Inside the suite, the door clicked shut, and he finally set me down. For a moment, we just looked at each other. No jokes. No sweet talk. Just heat. I slid my hands slowly to his neck. His fingers brushed my waist, light and questioning. Electric. The rest blurred into warmth and closeness. His jacket slipping to the floor. My breath turning ragged. The city lights watching silently through the glass. For a few hours, Jack didn't exist. The pain didn't exist. There was only heat, and the strange comfort of two strangers choosing not to be alone. Sometime in the early hours of the morning, I fell asleep against him. Sunlight crept across the bed. My eyes fluttered open. Silence. I reached out lazily and found cold sheets. I blinked. The other side of the bed was empty. His jacket was gone. His shoes were gone. Everything. No note. No message. Nothing. I stared at the ceiling for a long moment. Then I exhaled. Okay. It was just one night. A random stranger. A reckless decision. A distraction. Exactly what I had wanted. I got out of bed, gathered my clothes, and dressed quietly. My reflection in the mirror didn't look ashamed. Just normal. Alive. That was all I needed. By the time I left the hotel, I had already locked the memory away. One night. One mistake. One stranger. And that was that. Or at least, that's what I thought.OLIVIA POVThe moment the car disappeared down the drive, my legs gave out.I slid down the kitchen cabinet until I was sitting on the floor, right next to the coffee stain I still hadn't finished cleaning."I might start to believe in fate."I had said that. CASSIUS POVI woke at five. I had woken at five for ten years.By 5:30, I had finished my workout in the home gym I started using after I cancelled my membership. I never had.The kitchen light was on.My housekeeper had resigned a week ago. So I probably had a new one by now. I stopped on the last step, my jaw already tightening. Then I heard a small, panicked voice. "Water at forty degrees. Towels in thirds. Never speak unless spoken to…"I stepped into the doorway. The kitchen smelled of coffee and something faintly floral. I had no business recognizing it.A woman stood at my counter with her back to me, pouring coffee with a hand that was shaking so hard it clinke
OLIVIA POVBy the time the black car rolled out of Cassius Lance's driveway, my notepad had three full pages of rules and my hand was cramping.Water at forty degrees. Towels in thirds. Never enter unless called. Never speak unless spoken to. A whole lot more.I read my own handwriting for the fifth time and nearly laughed. I had a degree in Art History. I could name every Renaissance portraitist from memory. Somewhere between the third traffic light and the fourth, I saw her.A girl stood outside a small photo studio, a camera around her neck and a tripod under one arm. Curly hair in a messy bun.
