After what feels like hours, even though I know it has only been a few minutes, I finally pull myself away from the log. I need to freshen up after everything that just happened. There is no way I can simply go back to normal after telling Mark something I have barely been able to admit to myself.

The truth is out.

Looking back toward him, I find Mark still sitting where I left him, staring into the fire with a thoughtful expression. Suddenly feeling shy about everything that just happened, I t

  • The Heir's Child   Familiars

"Okay, spill it. What happened?" Raven asks the moment that Mark leaves."We went camping. You knew that." I say sarcastically. "Well, no duh. But...did anything interesting happen? I mean, you two were alone all weekend." She squeals.Pulling out my phone, I turn it on and wait until the phone loads. I can practically feel Raven vibrating in excitement next to me. I just keep ignoring her until I can finally pull up my photos."I took photos of the coolest part of the weekend. I am worried though so I need your advice." I tell her.She looks at me curiously as I hold my phone out for her to look at. She takes it and looks down at the picture of the wolves. Slowly, she flips through each picture and studies them carefully."You found these two in the woods? All alone?" She asks."Yes, I fed them as much as I could for the weekend but I do not like that they are all alone. I do not know why they are alone but I know that something must have happened. I am not sure if they are going to

  • The Heir's Child   Final Wolfy Visit

That night, instead of staying up all night, focusing on the sounds, I allow them to lull me to sleep. I do not take long to fall into a deep sleep. One that is not interrupted. Even when the mother wolf and her pup come to visit.Mark and I have been careful to not leave food out when we are not awake, or near the camp site. So far, this has not caused any issues. Tonight, it still does not cause an issue. It does however open things up for the two wolves. My wolf is aware enough to be able to pay attention to them and know that they are not going to harm anyone. So she allows me to sleep, while she watches the two walk around camp. When they are unable to find any food, they sniff around for a while until they find my trail. Once they do find it, the both follow it until the reach my tent.Outside my tent, they curl up and fall asleep. Almost directly outside of my door. That is what Mark wakes up to find in the morning. That is also the reason that I am so rudely awakened by his y

  • The Heir's Child   Last Night

"Last night camping. Are you ready to get back to life tomorrow?" Mark asks me.I look around our little campsite, I cannot imagine being anywhere else right now. Everything about this weekend has just felt so right and amazing. I have been more at peace than I have in months, maybe even years. What I thought was peace in my pack, really was just my group of friends and the fact that we were at the top. That is not all pack life is though."Definitely not. I might have to come out here again. If I can get permission, of course." I joke."I am sure that I can get you permission to be on this land. I might know some people." He says with a small wink.I laugh as I reply, "Yeah, but my boss is terrible. Who knows when I will get another weekend off. Especially before the baby comes.""I guess that I will have to have a talk with your boss then. That just does not seem fair. Besides, who says it has to be on a weekend?" He asks.I light up at that idea. It might actually be easier for us

  • The Heir's Child   Water

For a few seconds, neither of us says anything.I am still staring at the water in the bottom of the canoe while Mark stares at me like he is trying to figure out exactly what just happened."Okay," he finally says. "That was not a normal amount of water."I bite my lip, trying not to laugh."What do you mean?""I mean, I paddled some water at you. You somehow managed to turn that into a tidal wave." He gestures toward himself, completely soaked."I guess I am just really good with an oar.""That was not the oar."His words make my stomach drop for half a second."What?"He points toward the water between us."I have been canoeing since I was a kid. I know what happens when you pull an oar through the water. That was..." He pauses, looking for the right word. "Different."I force a laugh and shrug."Maybe I just got lucky.""Maybe."The way he says it tells me that he does not believe me.I look away and focus on the lake again. My heart is beating faster now, not because I am afraid

  • The Heir's Child   Lake

Mark was totally right. The lake is amazing. It is quiet and peaceful just like the woods around us.As I look around, I can see lily pads closer to shore with small frogs sitting on top. There are a few down logs that have turtles on them. There are also dragonflies. Hundreds of them. Everywhere. They occasionally land on the side of the canoe and just sit there, along for the ride. Some of the land on the paddle, only to fly off as soon as it gets closer to the water. One even lands on my hand for a moment.I watch it with a small smile on my face as I examine all of the colors. They are all different bright colors that I love to look at. This one, however, is a purple color. As the sun reflects it goes between being a deep purple color and a dark blue. It is amazing to watch the color shift slightly in the sunlight.Looking around, I cannot help but feel the nature surrounding us. I am even more aware of it here than I am in just the woods. That is a little strange considering my

Suddenly feeling shy about everything that just happened, I turn toward the fire and pretend that it needs my attention.I grab another piece of wood and carefully place it onto the flames."Rowan."I turn at the sound of his voice."I want to thank you for feeling comfortable enough to tell me that."He is standing behind me. I am so caught up in my own thoughts that I didn't hear him approach. Even with my heightened senses, I somehow completely missed him."I... I never thought I would tell anyone," I admit quietly. "At least, not anytime soon. Thank y

  • The Heir's Child   Flashes

Flashes. That was all I had.Flashes of light.Flashes of voices.Flashes of movement just beyond my reach.Every time I tried to grasp one of the memories, it slipped away like water through my fingers. My head pounded. It felt as though someone had taken a hammer to my skull and then left the pie

  • The Heir's Child   Future plans

Troy looked far too pleased with himself as we sat around sipping our drinks and talking about all the trouble we'd inevitably get into at college.I still couldn't believe everyone had decided to go.When Lyall and I first made our plans, I'd imagined the two of us facing a new world together. Som

"On a more serious note," Mel said, lifting his empty glass, "one of us has to go get the next round, don't we?"A collective groan went around the table. We all laughed at Mel's expression. His family was ridiculously wealthy. Not spoiled exactly, but definitely accustomed to convenience. If there

  • The Heir's Child   Last Night Out

Knowing I wouldn't be allowed to leave until I promised to be careful, I gave my parents the reassurance they wanted before retreating to my room to finish getting ready. Most of my friends were guys, and I usually blended right in with them. Every now and then, though, I enjoyed reminding them tha
