Winora’s POV

“Are you going to disobey?” Fenrir’s voice brushed against my ear, low and threatening.

I stood frozen between his arms, my back pressed against the wall, staring at the man who had somehow become both the source of my fear and the reason my heart refused to behave.

His mismatched eyes held mine. Neither offered me a hint of the man who had almost kissed me before pushing me away as though I meant nothing to him. I hated that I remembered that moment.

I hated that I still wondered what would have happened if he hadn't stopped Most of all, I hated that he could stand this close to me and still make me feel utterly unwanted.

“Yes,” I whispered.

His expression hardened. “What did you say?”

“I said yes. I will disobey you.” For a moment, neither of us moved as fenrir slowly straightened.

“You should be careful with your words, Winora.”

“And you should be careful with your demands.” His jaw clenched. I knew I was pushing him. Every instinct screamed at me to lower my eyes, apologize, and avoid provoking the most powerful lycan in the territory.

But I was tired of being treated like a convenient solution to a problem I hadn't created. Tired of elders discussing my future as though I weren't standing in the same room. Tired of wondering whether Fenrir saw a woman when he looked at me or merely a means to secure his bloodline.

“You came here because six old lycans ordered you to sleep with me,” I said. “And when I refused, you threatened to punish me. What exactly do you expect me to say?” His gaze sharpened.

“The pack's future is at stake.”

“Then let the pack find another solution.”

“There is no other solution.”

“That's unfortunate.”

“Winora.”

“What? You want me to pretend I'm honored? You want me to thank you for making it clear that my wishes don't matter?”

“I never said your wishes didn't matter.”

“You didn't have to.” The silence between us was suffocating.

I could see the tension in his shoulders, the way his hands curled at his sides. His wolf was close to the surface, and every sensible part of me wanted to retreat Instead, I lifted my chin.

“I agreed to become your surrogate. I agreed to help you secure your bloodline but I never agreed to surrender my right to choose what happens to my body.” His expression changed slightly.

“You understood the arrangement.”

“I understood that I would carry a child if the ritual succeeded. I understood that your pack would provide for me. I did not understand that you believed you could order me into a physical relationship whenever your elders demanded it.” He looked away. That small movement hurt more than it should have.

“Get dressed,” he said.

I stared at him. “Why?”

“We're going to the council chamber.”

“It's the middle of the night.”

“And the elders are waiting for an answer.”

“Then give them one.” His eyes returned to mine.

“You will explain your refusal yourself.” I almost laughed of course. If I was going to challenge their precious traditions, I would have to stand before the people who upheld them and defend myself.

I would rather face six angry elders than allow Fenrir to mistake my silence for surrender.

“Give me five minutes,” I said as He opened the door and stepped outside.For once, I was grateful that he hadn't argued. I changed into a dark dress, tied my hair back, and looked at myself in the mirror. My hands were shaking.

“You can do this,” I whispered.

I wasn't sure whether I was speaking to myself or the frightened girl I had been before entering this pack but I repeated the words until my breathing steadied.

Then I stepped into the corridor.

~~~~
The council chamber was lit by dozens of candles.
Six elders sat around the long oak table, their faces set in expressions of disapproval. Elder Thorne occupied the seat nearest Fenrir's chair, while Elder Morwen watched me as though she had already decided I was guilty of something. Fenrir stood at the head of the table.
He didn't offer me a reassuring glance and I hadn't expected one.
“Winora,” Thorne began, “we understand there has been a disagreement concerning the completion of the ritual.”
“There's no disagreement,” I replied. “I refused.” His eyebrows rose.
“You refuse to fulfill the purpose for which you were brought here?”
“I refuse to be forced into something I don't want.”
Morwen sighed impatiently.
“This is not a matter of personal preference. The Alpha's bloodline must be secured. The ritual requires more than a magical conception.”
“Then perhaps you should have explained that before I agreed to become the surrogate.”
“The details were made clear.”
“Not to me.” Thorne struck the table with his palm.
“You would do well to remember your position.” I flinched, but I didn't retreat.
“My position? I'm the woman you expect to carry the Alpha's heir. I'm the woman you expect to obey every demand without question but when I ask whether my consent matters, suddenly I'm forgetting my position?” Nobody answered as
I turned toward Fenrir.
“Did you tell them I refused?”
“Yes,” he replied.
“And did you tell them why?”
“You objected to the ritual.” I stared at him in disbelief.
“That isn't the reason.”
“Then explain it.” I drew a steadying breath.
“Because your Alpha came to my bedroom and told me that sleeping with him was a duty. Because he made it clear that my feelings didn't matter because I am expected to accept whatever he wants, even after he made me believe for one foolish moment that he might actually want me.” The last words escaped before I could stop them.
Silence fell over the chamber.
Fenrir went completely still.
I wished I could take the words back. Not because they weren't true, but because I hadn't intended to expose that vulnerable part of myself in front of these people.
Morwen broke the silence.
“Your personal feelings are irrelevant.”
“Of course they are.”
“Your responsibility is to ensure the future of this pack.”
“My responsibility is to honor the agreement I made. Nothing more.” Thorne turned toward Fenrir.
“Alpha, this is precisely what we warned you about. You have allowed a human to challenge the authority of this council.” Fenrir's expression turned cold.
“She has challenged your demand. That is not the same thing.” Thorne stared at him.
“You would defend her?”
“I will defend any decision I believe is necessary for this pack.”
“Then complete the ritual.”
“No.” The single word seemed to stop every breath in the room. Fenrir rested both hands on the table.
“The ritual will not be forced. If the council believes there is a legitimate reason to proceed, present it without threats or appeals to tradition. Until then, the matter is closed.” Morwen's eyes narrowed.
“You are risking the stability of your own leadership.”
“Then let my leadership be judged by the decisions I make, not by whether I obey every demand you issue.” Thorne pushed his chair back.
“This discussion is not over.”
“Then we will continue it in the morning.” Fenrir dismissed the elders before anyone could argue further.
I remained where I was, uncertain what to make of what had just happened. He had defended my refusal but I couldn't tell whether he had done it for me or because he couldn't tolerate being ordered around.
Those were two very different things and I had made the mistake of confusing them once already.
~~~~

The corridor was nearly empty when we left the chamber.mI walked several steps ahead of Fenrir, eager to return to my room before he could say something that would undo whatever small victory I had managed to secure.

“Winora.” I stopped but didn't turn.

“What?”

“You shouldn't have mentioned the kiss.” My heart sank as I turned slowly.

“Why? Did it embarrass you?” His expression tightened.

“This isn't about embarrassment.”

“Then what is it about?” He stared at me for a long moment as I waited.mFinally, he said, “You don't understand what you're asking of me.” A bitter laugh escaped my throat.

“That's because you never explain anything. You make decisions, issue orders, and expect everyone to understand.”

“Some things are more complicated than you realize.”

“Then explain them.” He said nothing as I shook my head.

“That's what I thought.” I turned away again.

This time, he didn't stop me.I had nearly reached the staircase when a guard hurried toward us.

“Alpha!” Fenrir immediately turned.

“What happened?”

“The eastern gate, sir. One of the sentries found something outside the perimeter.” The guard held out a small black pouch.

Fenrir took it and opened the drawstring Inside lay a silver ring.

I had seen it years ago, on the hand of the maid who had took care of me when father never cared.

It was the only possession she had left me. I'd lost it shortly before arriving at Fenrir's territory. I had searched everywhere, convinced it had fallen somewhere along the road. Now it was sitting in Fenrir's palm.

“How did this get here?” I whispered as The guard looked at me.

“It was left beside the eastern gate. There was a note with it.” Fenrir removed a folded piece of paper from the pouch, His eyes moved across the writing. Then his entire expression changed.

“What does it say?” I demanded as He hesitated.

“Give it to me.” For a moment, I thought he would refuse. Then he handed me the paper as the message was brief.

Stop the ritual, Stop the search for your mate and tell the Alpha what you know about the child he intends to create.

My fingers went numb as I read the final line again.

“The child he intended to create.” I looked up at Fenrir.

“I don't understand.”nHis mismatched eyes fixed on me.

“Neither do I.”mBut his voice told me something else.

He was frightened and when he looked down at the silver ring in his hand, I realized he recognized the symbol engraved inside it.

“Winora,” he said quietly. “Where did you get this ring?” I stared at him.

“I told you. It belonged to the maid who took care of me.” His face went pale as he closed his fist around the ring.

“Take her to her chambers,” he ordered the guard. “No one is to enter without my permission.”

“What?” I stepped toward him. “Fenrir, tell me what's happening!”

The guard moved between us. I tried to push past him, but Fenrir had already turned away.

“Fenrir!” He stopped at the end of the corridor without looking back.

“Tomorrow,” he said. “I'll explain everything tomorrow.”

Then he disappeared through the council chamber doors. I stood motionless, staring at the empty corridor.

For the first time since arriving at the pack, I wasn't thinking about the elders, the ritual or whether Fenrir wanted me.

I was thinking about the message that had somehow found its way into the heart of a lycan king's territory.

Someone knew who I was.

Someone knew what Fenrir intended to do and whoever had left that message was determined to stop it.

    The first thing I did after Fenrir disappeared behind the council chamber doors was check whether the guard was still outside my room as I searched my belongings for the silver ring my mother had left me. It was gone. I checked beneath the mattress, inside my drawers, and even between the pages of the book I'd been reading before Fenrir came to my room the previous night. Someone had left the ring at the eastern gate. Someone had known enough about my mother to send a warning to the Alpha. And Fenrir had recognized the symbol engraved inside it. What frightened me most wasn't that a stranger knew about my past. It was that Fenrir knew something I didn't. I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at the pendant resting against my palm. The crescent moon and four tiny stars glimmered in the morning light. “Who were you, Mama?” I whispered. She had died when I was young, leaving me with more questions than memories. I'd spent years suffering under my step mother. Instead, here I

    Fenrir's POV The council chamber smelled of old parchment, burnt wood, and the suffocating weight of tradition. I stood at the head of the long oak table, fists planted on the surface, staring down six of the oldest, most insufferable lycans in the pack. "The bloodline must be secured," Elder Thorne rasped, his voice like gravel scraping against bone. "The ritual was a formality. The magic ensured the child would take. But the act itself, the physical union must be performed to solidify the bond between sire and surrogate. It is tradition. It is law." "The child is already conceived," I said flatly. "The surrogate is pregnant. The line is secure." "The line is half secure," Elder Morwen countered, her sharp eyes glittering. "The child grows, but the pack grows restless. They whisper that their Alpha refuses to claim his surrogate. That he is weak. That he cannot perform his most basic duty." My wolf stirred, a low growl rumbling in my chest. They dare question us? "The p

    Fenrir's POVThe door slammed behind her, and I stood there like a fucking statue, towel wrapped around my waist, cock hard enough to cut glass, and my wolf howling in my skull like a lovesick pup.“You let her go” my wolf purred.Shut up.“She was right there. Her scent……goddess, her scent like rain on wildflowers…” I said shut up.I dragged a hand down my face, trying to will my body back under control but It didn't work. Nothing worked not when it came to her.Winora, Her name alone was a splinter under my skin. She'd barged into my chambers like she belonged there like I belonged to her and I'd nearly ruined everything. Nearly pinned her against the wall, dragged those sheets from her trembling hands and buried myself inside her until neither of us could remember our own names.“You were going to kiss her.” My wolf continued as my thoughts went spiral.I know. My wolf prowled beneath my skin, smug and insufferable. “Looks like someone's in love.”I snorted, grabbing the shirt f

    The moment his eyes landed on me dark, unreadable, burning with something I couldn't name. I should have turned around and fled. Forgotten the sheets. Slept on the bare mattress. Anything but this but my feet were rooted to the floor. He just stood there, shirt still tangled around his arms, watching me like I was the one who'd done something wrong. Which….technically, I had. "The sheets," I managed, voice coming out embarrassingly breathless. "I just……,I left them here earlier. When I made your bed." He tilted his head. "You made my bed." It wasn't a question. "I….yes. The servants were busy and you'd just come back from the fight and” I was rambling. Stop rambling. "It doesn't matter. I'll just grab them and go." I moved toward the bed, refusing to look at him, refusing to acknowledge the heat crawling up my neck. The sheets were folded neatly at the foot of his bed of course they were, because I'd folded them myself and I grabbed them, clutching them to my chest like a s

    "YOU DARE?" Xena's shriek echoed through the corridor like a war cry. I stopped walking, closing my eyes for half a second. Should've kept going. But it was too late. She was already in front of me, cheek still red from my slap, eyes blazing with humiliation and rage. "A rankless wolf," she hissed, jabbing her finger at my chest, "slapping me? Do you have any idea who I am?" I didn't flinch. "A pain in my ass?" The servants lingering in the hallway gasped. Xena's face twisted. "I am fenrir’s closest friend ," she snarled. "I have rank. I have blood. You're nothing but a…." "Rankless?" I cut her off, stepping closer. "I'm your Luna." Xena laughed. It was loud and mocking, echoing off the walls like she wanted everyone to hear. She threw her head back, clutching her chest like I'd told the funniest joke she'd ever heard. "Luna?" She wiped a fake tear from her eye. "Oh, that's rich. You? Luna?" She gestured at me, up and down. "You're not his real mate. You're nothing but a pla
