The next morning, while we ran the wall’s perimeter for what felt like the millionth time, I could feel his eyes on me before I even saw him.

Rowan.

The weight of his presence was suffocating, and I felt as though I couldn't breathe. As my breathing became more erratic, I almost tripped over my own feet.

“Eyes up,” Nolan said quietly, appearing at my shoulder as if he knew exactly what was the matter with me, “Keep your breaths to the count of three. In. Out.”

I followed his lead, letting his calmness ground me.

Breathe in for three steps, out for three, my focus entirely on my feet and my breathing.

I didn’t look toward the parapet, and I didn’t break pace as much as my body wanted me to.

“Good,” Nolan said when we hit the stairs. “Don’t hand your attention to anyone. Not even a king.”

I swallowed.

“He’s not…”

“Not the enemy,” he said mildly. “I know, but he’s clearly not a stable influence on you either..no matter what your heart tells you.”

I nod silently and follow him to the t

Nolan stood in the middle of the training yard with a clipboard in his hand. The rest of us circled him, sweat dripping from drills, the dirt still fresh on our palms.“We’ve got orders,” he said. “I’m taking a unit north to the border pack. Anyone chosen leaves tomorrow at first light. This is a field test, not practice. If you aren’t ready, step out now.”No one moved. He started calling names. Warriors first, then omegas who had been training longer than me. His pen scratched as he marked them down. When he paused, I stepped forward. “I’ll go.”A ripple went through the group. Someone let out a low whistle. Another snorted, “She won’t last a day.”“Shut it,” Nolan snapped without looking up. His eyes came to me instead. He didn’t look surprised. Just steady. “You’re already on the list.”The words made my chest tighten. “I am?”He nodded once. “But don’t celebrate yet. It isn’t final. You’ll stand in front of the Omega Leader, and you’ll stand in front of the King. They cleared you

I leave the chamber and the quiet outside is a welcome relief from the politics that drained my days.I walk quickly and I do not slow down. If I slow down, I think, and if I think, I go to her, and if I go to her, I will break the rules that I set myself..I take the back stairs that lead to the yard and stop two floors up where the window overlooks the training lines. Nolan is in the dirt with the ladder squares. His movements are crisp and exact, as expected of my Gamma. He resets the pattern without looking at it. He has done this enough times to be able to do it blindfolded. The trainees stretch and shift. A few try to look like they are not watching the parapets. I know who they hope to see and I know when posture turns into performance. She is not out there though. Relief comes first, then disgust at myself for feeling it. My wolf bristles at the weakness."She should be with us," he says. "Always with us."“She will be with Nolan,” I think. “It is safer.”"It is not enough," h

“The transition has been steadier than we expected,” my appointed supervisor says as his fingers shake on the stack of papers he brought to impress me. “Marcus’s uncle stepped in as steward. There’s been no organized pushback.”“‘No organized’ is not the same as ‘none,’” Elder Keane says. He sits forward like he wants to bite. “What did they do that was not organized.”“Isolated challenges at the gate,” the supervisor answers, eyes on his notes. “One fight at rations. Two arrests. No fatalities. The steward held the line.”“And Marcus?” I ask, cutting through the room. The supervisor freezes. The scrape of a chair stops. No one breathes.“I asked about Marcus,” I say again, because the man is slow.“His title was stripped,” the supervisor says. “He went quiet. He doesn’t attend his council. He doesn’t see anyone outside his family. He’s in seclusion.”Coward."Weak," my wolf growls, restless under my skin. "He hurt her. We should have ended him."“Tell me about the outsiders,” Elder V

Word of the Luna Game spread like wildfire through the palace and its citizens.Servants whispered in corridors, voices lowered but urgent, like gossip alone could change their place in the world. The east hall was being transformed daily, long banners stretching down the stone walls in crimson and gold, ready for the arrival of the daughters of ranked families from every pack under the kingdom’s protection.Crates arrived in a near constant stream, carried in under heavy guard as if jewels and silks were worth more than blood. Dresses, jewelry, ornaments — gleaming promises of wealth and status. Slowly but surely, unfamiliar women began to appear in the gardens with their mothers. They walked slowly, talked even slower, and practiced smiles that looked like traps.I told myself none of it mattered. I told myself I was fine. But the truth dug sharp under my ribs.Maybe Nolan saw it, because he worked us harder that week than he ever had before. Or maybe it was all for show — a way to

We started running at the perimeter wall at dawn. Nolan wanted two circuits the first day, three the next, and by the end of the week, my lungs felt like they’d been set on fire, doused in water, and then twisted dry. Everything hurt.“Try to breathe on the third step,” Nolan said, pacing me as I ran, his stride easy at my side. “In for three, out for three. Rhythms can save lives.”“Tell my legs that,” I panted.“Tell them yourself. They listen to you, not me.” He half smirked backWe finished at the ladder squares, and he watched my feet like a hawk as I moved through the agility training. When I had finished, his eyes dropped to my feet, and he shook his head.“You look at your feet too much, it slows you down. Keep your eyes up and trust your body.”“My body and I are on terrible terms.” I forced out between gulping breaths of air.“Make friends with it then,” he said, deadpan, and clapped me on again. When I fumbled a pattern of squares with my steps, he didn’t sigh, and he didn
