Chapter 8.

last update Veröffentlichungsdatum: 03.09.2026 22:39:12

The vehicle pulls away from the house before I've finished watching Daniel disappear from the window.

"This is where it stops being easy," Isa says, not turning from the front seat. "Elena exists on paper now, banking, leases, a digital footprint that'll survive anyone who goes looking. Cash reserves. A burner for anything that can't wait." A pause. "Direct contact with us stops today. You'll operate alone.”

"Alone," I repeat, and the word tastes exactly like it did the first time she said it.

The car stops outside a high-rise I don't recognize. Isa doesn't get out. She just holds a set of keys back over the seat, apartment, car, both stamped with a fob I don't recognize yet.

"Aren't you coming up?" I ask.

"No." She doesn't explain further, and I've learned not to ask twice. "Everything you need is inside."

Jake climbs out with me, pulls me into a quick, hard hug before I can protest. "Stay safe," he murmurs against my ear, low enough that Isa won't hear it. "I mean it."

I take the keys, and the door shuts behind me before I've even reached the curb.

…….

The apartment is beautiful in the specific way of something built for a person who doesn't exist.

Marble counters. A skyline view. Closets already full of Elena's clothes in Elena's sizes, shoes lined up like a woman who's lived here for years instead of a woman who will sleep here for the first time tonight.

Everything I need. Nothing that's mine.

The burner phone waits on the counter, screen already lit with one message from Isa.

“Rafael is your opening. Use dinner to get closer to the family, not just the man. Don't waste it.”

I read it twice before I put the phone down.

I dig Daniel's handkerchief out of my bag before I've even set down the rest of my things, and press it to my face without letting myself think about it first.

His cologne, faint, familiar, exactly enough to make my throat tighten.

Then it hits me, the wrongness of it, standing in an apartment built for another man's attention while I'm holding onto the scent of the one I actually love. I fold it carefully and tuck it into the nightstand drawer, out of sight, because some things don't survive being looked at too long.

My phone buzzes. Rafael.

Rafael's text lands first: "What's the address to your place, mi amor?" Rafael texts.

I smirk at the screen, thumbs already moving. "You could've had that an hour ago if you wanted it badly enough." I add. "We both know that.”

"True," he replies. "But Elena, I wanted to do this one the right way."

I send it over: "214 Brickell Bay Dr, Miami. Try to earn it twice."

"Marcus will be there at eight," he writes. "Don't be late. I don't like waiting."

"You'll survive."

"Maybe." A pause. "I've been told patience isn't one of my virtues, Cariño. Tonight's testing that theory.”

I set the phone down and let myself breathe for the first time since the car door shut on Selene Vasquez's old life.

I'm still unpacking when my phone rings again, not Rafael this time. A number I know by heart even though I've never saved it.

Mamá

I let it ring twice before I answer. "Hey."

"Mi hija." Her voice cracks trying to sound light. "I've called so many times, I wasn't sure you'd ever pick up again.”

"I've been busy."

"You're always busy." A pause, the kind that used to mean something different before it started meaning everything. "You didn't call on my birthday, Selene."

"I sent the money, Mama.”

"I don't want the money." Her voice breaks fully this time. "I want my daughter. Do you know how long it's been since you let me into anything? I don't even know what city you're in."

"You know why."

"I know you blame me." Her voice is quieter now, worn thin. "I know what happened in that house. I've never stopped knowing it."

"Then why are you still in it?"

Silence stretches long enough that I think the call dropped.

"Because I don't have anywhere else," she finally says, and something in me that's spent years being furious at her nearly breaks at how small she sounds saying it.

"You could have left. I begged you to leave. I was sixteen, Mama, and I begged."

"I know."

"You picked him. Every single time, you picked him." My voice shakes despite everything I've trained it not to do. "And I ran because staying meant something worse was going to happen to me, and you weren't going to stop it."

"Selene—"

"You chose a man over your own daughter mama," I say, and it comes out uglier than I mean it to, "isn't that what you're going to tell everyone? That I abandoned you? You abandoned me first."

She's crying now, and some old, stubborn piece of me wants to hang up before I start crying too.

"I love you," she says. "Even if I don't deserve to say that anymore."

"I know." My voice finally breaks. "I still send the money because some part of me still hopes you'll use it to leave him. I don't know why I keep hoping that."

"Selene—"

"I have to go." I hang up before she can answer, because there's nothing left to say that won't cost more than I have left to give tonight.

I sit on the edge of the bed a long moment, then push my skirt up just enough to see it, the scar, raised and pale along my thigh, the one that marks the exact night everything ended and began at once. The night I ran. The night that led me into six months I don't let myself remember in full. The night Isa found me half-conscious in a warehouse and asked if I wanted to disappear, or become someone who never had to feel powerless again.

I chose the second one. I've never let myself regret it.

I press my palm to the scar and let myself cry, the kind of crying that comes without warning and doesn't ask permission first.

The doorbell rings. I wipe my face fast, check the peephole out of habit before I open it—and go completely still.

"Get me a coffee," I say.Lucía looks at me for exactly one beat too long before she nods and goes.I turn to the window, taking in the view Rafael built for me, and wait. She returns with the coffee in four minutes, sets it on the desk, and positions herself near the door with the particular posture of someone waiting to be dismissed or needed, whichever comes first.I lift the cup. Take one sip. It's sweet. Too sweet, the kind of sweet that suggests someone decided what I'd like without asking.I set it down."It's too sugary," I say. "I don't want it."Lucía stares at the cup."Return it," I say. "And when you're done, I need everyone in the finance department in the boardroom. Ten minutes."She takes the cup and leaves, and I open my laptop and give her the full ten. They're all seated when I arrive — twelve of them, ranged around the long table with the careful arrangement of people who have been told to be somewhere and don't yet know why. Lucía stands at the front, near the pr

The morning after an argument that wasn't finished has a particular texture.Rafael moves around the room getting dressed the way he always does, with the ease of a man who belongs in every space he occupies, but there's a tightness to it today, something held in reserve. He tries twice — once when he hands me my coffee without being asked, setting it on the nightstand with a pointed silence that is clearly an overture, and once when he touches my shoulder as I stand at the mirror and I step away before his hand can settle. He lets it go. For now.I know that ‘for now’ has a shelf life, and I move through the routine of getting ready with the precise efficiency of someone who is not going to be the first one to speak.……..Upstairs in the mansion, in the room Enzo and Camila share, the morning has gone sideways in a different direction entirely."I'm going insane," Camila says, from the bed, staring at the ceiling. "I wake up. I eat. I sit in this house. I sleep. Wake up again.""You

I'm off the bed before I've fully decided to move, yanking the wardrobe open, pushing through the shelf where I keep the things that are mine and not Elena's, and my hands find the pill packet before my eyes do."What are you doing?"Rafael's voice from the bed, confused, propped on one elbow, the warm and disheveled version of him that I can't afford to look at directly right now."Taking my pill," I say. "I missed yesterday.""And it can't wait until morning?""No." I pop one through the foil, reach for the glass on the nightstand. Empty. "There's no water.""Elena." His voice shifts. "If we have a child—""We're not having a child, Rafael."The silence that follows is the kind that has weight."Why not?" He sits up fully now, and something in his voice has changed, something tighter underneath the confusion. "We're together. You live here. You work with us now. You know everything about this family — things that could get you killed if you walked away. And still you look at me like

But he does. He does it again, and again, until my legs are shaking and I'm gripping the sheets with one hand, and my whole body is coiling tight, tighter—He stops.I make a sound of protest, almost a sob, and he pulls his fingers away and rolls me onto my back, and he's over me now, his body caging mine, and I can see him in the dim light from the window, his face stripped of all the careful control he wears like a mask."Not yet," he says. "Not like this.""Then how—"He answers by lowering his head to my neck, mouth open, teeth grazing my pulse, and I feel his smile when I shudder. He works his way down, unhurried, his tongue tracing the hollow of my throat, the line of my collarbone, and his hands are pushing my top up, and I lift my arms to help him get it off.He looks at me. Just looks, for a moment, his eyes dark and hungry, and something in his expression makes my chest ache."Quédate quieta," he murmurs. (Trans: Stay still)"Rafael—""Quieta." He presses a kiss between my b

"Elena." Rafael's voice."Sorry," I say. "Sorry, what?""I said the wine's good tonight." He's looking at me with that careful attention again, the one that's slightly too accurate. "You've been somewhere else all evening.""I'm here," I say. "I'm right here."The front door opens.Adriano walks in with his jacket slung over one shoulder and his shirt open at the collar in the particular way of a man who has spent the last several hours doing something that required more precision than dinner and has since shed the effort of appearing contained."There he is," Enzo says. "We were taking bets.""On what?""Whether you were coming back tonight."Adriano takes the seat at the end of the table, and a staff member is already moving, and Valentina stands before anyone else does and speaks to them, asking for his plate to be brought.I watch him. He finds my eyes across the table almost immediately, the instinct of it involuntary, and then reads something in my face and looks away first. He

Rafael's office at the end of the day looks different, ordered, unhurried, the view still catching the last of the light, but he moves through it with a tiredness he isn't quite hiding.I watch him fold a document into his briefcase, straighten his jacket on the back of his chair, and pause at the window for a moment that isn't about the view."¿Estás bien?" he says, without turning. (Trans: Are you okay?)"Yes," I say. "Just tired.""I know." He comes to me, puts one hand against my jaw, tilts my face up. "Es mucho para el primer día. Ya casi terminamos." (Trans: It's a lot for a first day. We're almost done.)He kisses my temple, picks up his briefcase, and we leave together.……..The mansion receives us the way it always does, warmly, efficiently, the staff appearing at exactly the right moment without being summoned."Dinner will be served shortly," one of them says."Is everyone home?" Rafael asks. She folds her hands. "Yes, sir. Señorita Camila is upstairs with Señor Enzo. Señor
