Niccolo came back every day for a little over ten days.

The details I had buried resurfaced one at a time.

He brought food every day.

Bread the first day, fruit the second, and later canned food, cheese, and hot soup.

I never once admitted out loud that I was hungry.

Niccolo would put the bag down and I wouldn't thank him.

But when he came back the next day, the bag was always empty.

"Why didn't you tell my family?" I asked.

"Tell them what?"

"That I was alone at the vineyard."
