Chapter 1

Evan Hayes’s latest Instagram Story showed a bank notification.

Fifty thousand dollars.

The transfer came from Claire Bennett. The note read:

Congratulations on becoming an attending. I’ll be there for every celebration from now on.

Comments appeared almost immediately.

That is one hell of a bonus.

Isn’t it Adrian’s birthday today? Looks like Evan is the real guest of honor.

Someone even tagged me.

I didn’t respond. I reopened the transfer Claire had sent me that morning.

Five hundred dollars.

Happy birthday. Love you.

At seven, she had texted to say the hospital had called an emergency consultation and she wouldn’t make it home.

Apparently, the consultation was being held at a rooftop bar.

In Evan’s next video, Claire sat at the center of the terrace, champagne in hand.

I watched her for a few seconds, and my mind slipped back seven years.

After Claire’s parents died, they left behind a table buried under collection notices and an old house the bank was preparing to seize. She stopped going to class and answered no calls.

When I reached her apartment, I found her sitting in the dark kitchen with an open bottle of sleeping pills on the table.

I took the bottle away and stayed beside her until dawn.

Later, I sold the apartment I had only just finished paying off and withdrew my acceptance from an architecture firm in London.

The partner who recruited me asked three times, “Adrian, are you sure?”

Each time, I said yes.

For years, I took small remote design contracts, covered our expenses, helped Claire prepare for exams, and drove to the hospital after her longest shifts.

There was no party when she secured her residency.

She wore a navy coat from a secondhand shop and stood behind the hospital, holding up her new ID badge. A passing security guard took our picture. It came out blurred, but Claire’s smile was brighter than I had ever seen it.

She rested her forehead against my shoulder.

“When I’m finally on my feet,” she said, “it’ll be my turn to take care of you.”

Claire had been on her feet for years.

She had simply learned to take care of someone else.

Laughter burst from my phone.

Evan had posted another video.

A woman approached Claire with a drink. “You’re spending tonight with Evan. Aren’t you worried Adrian will be upset?”

Claire leaned back in her chair.

“He won’t be.”

“You sound sure.”

“Adrian doesn’t like change.” She turned the stem of her glass between her fingers. “He’s comfortable with the life he has. He has no interest in starting over.”

Someone nearby laughed.

“So even when you don’t come home, he’ll still wait?”

Claire didn’t deny it.

“Honestly, if he left me, I don’t think he’d know what to do next.”

The camera shifted.

Evan settled beside her and stretched one arm across the back of her chair.

“If that’s what you think of him, why haven’t you ended it?”

The video cut off.

I locked my phone.

Seven years ago, I had stopped so Claire could keep moving forward.

Somewhere along the way, she had forgotten I once had a direction of my own.

The roast beef on the table had gone cold. Beside it stood an unopened bottle of wine. For dessert, I had ordered a lemon tart from the bakery where Claire and I had gone on our first date. A chocolate plaque on top carried both our names.

It looked ridiculous now.

I dropped the plaque into the trash and photographed the tart without lighting the candle.

Another year older.

Claire called a few minutes later.

“What was that post supposed to mean?”

She didn’t wish me a happy birthday or ask whether I had eaten.

“Nothing.”

“An empty table, dessert for one, and that caption.” Her voice dropped. “Were you trying to tell everyone I didn’t come home?”

“It was just a birthday post.”

“Adrian, don’t do this.”

The familiar impatience had already entered her voice.

“I told you I had work. I let you know in advance, and I sent you money. Do you really need to make everyone think I neglected you?”

Through the call, I heard someone say her name.

Evan.

Claire spoke before I could answer.

“I don’t have time for this right now. We’ll talk when I get home.”

The call ended.

On the bookshelf stood the photograph from the hospital steps. Claire, in that secondhand coat, held tightly to my hand as if she had finally found a way back into her own life.

I could no longer remember when mine had stopped.

I opened my laptop and found an email I had archived a month earlier.

Adrian, the St. Catherine’s Children’s Medical Center project has entered the design phase. We still need a lead architect with healthcare experience. That position was yours seven years ago. If you’re ready to come back, it still is.

Seven years ago, I had turned them down three times for Claire.

This time, I clicked Reply and typed one word.

Yes.

I stood to leave, but Claire remained in her seat.“Adrian.”I stopped. She looked at me.“What did you love about me back then?”The question caught me off guard.“Do you remember when you first started medicine?”She went still.Of course she remembered.Back then, Claire had almost nothing. She studied for weeks before every exam, celebrated the first time she completed a case report on her own, and kept going even when hospitals rejected her and professors told her she wasn’t ready. Some months, she barely knew how she would pay rent. But every morning, she got up and tried again.“I loved that version of you.”Her eyes reddened.“You were exhausted, but you never thought anyone owed you anything. If someone helped you once, you remembered it. When you got your first hospital position, you told me that one day, it would be your turn to take care of me.”I looked at her.“Later, you got everything you wanted. Somewhere along the way, you started treating my staying as something guar

Claire didn’t move toward the door.“Is this because you think something happened between Evan and me?”I looked at her.“I saw what he posted.”“You saw his posts?”Claire’s face went pale.A few days earlier, a mutual friend had forwarded Marcus several screenshots from Evan’s private account, and Marcus had sent them to me.They weren’t hospital photos. There was breakfast in a hotel room at two in the morning. Claire asleep on Evan’s sofa. Claire on his balcony wearing his jacket. One post had a single line beneath it:She always comes when I call.I held out my phone.Claire looked through the screenshots one by one. By the time she handed it back, there was no color left in her face.“I…”She stopped.“If I told you I lost perspective, would you believe me?”I almost laughed.“There were times I drank too much,” she said quietly. “I let things go further than they should have.”“But you never planned to leave me.”Her eyes lifted.“I didn’t.”“That doesn’t make it better.”Her ey

Claire was quiet for a moment before speaking again.“I know why you’re angry.”I said nothing.“It’s because of the money I gave Evan, right?”Her voice softened, as if she had finally found the answer.“He had just finished training. I wanted to reward him properly. The five hundred I sent you was only a birthday gesture. We’d been together seven years. I didn’t think money was something we needed to measure.”I leaned against the glass wall outside the conference room.A month later, she still thought this was about five hundred versus fifty thousand.“So?” I asked.“So I admit I didn’t handle it well. If it bothered you, I can make it up to you.”I almost laughed.“How?”“Whatever you want. I can buy you something, transfer money, even help with your place in London—”“Claire.”I cut her off.“Do you really think I left because Evan got more than I did?”The line went quiet.“I never cared about the number,” I said.“Then what do you care about?”“You should know.”She didn’t answe

By the time I landed in London, I was exhausted.Someone from the firm was waiting at Heathrow and drove me to a small apartment near the office. It had one bedroom, a narrow kitchen, and a desk by the window large enough to spread out a full set of drawings. After unpacking, I opened the old drawing case I had brought from home. For the first time in years, those tools no longer felt like reminders of what I had given up. They felt like mine again. My phone rang just as I finished showering.Claire.The moment I answered, she said, “You actually left.”Her voice was low, worn down by anger and exhaustion.“I told you to wait until I got back.”“I never agreed to.”“Adrian, Evan was in the emergency department. He needed stitches. I couldn’t just leave.”“I know.”“That’s not the point. We hadn’t finished talking, and you went straight to the airport.”“We had finished.”Then I said, “Claire, we’re over.”“I never agreed to that.”“You don’t have to.”Her breathing changed.“Seven year

“Why?”Claire stood in the kitchen as if she genuinely couldn’t understand. For two days, she had explained why she celebrated with Evan, helped with his apartment, knew his door code, and thought my life was stable enough.Yet the moment I decided to leave, she wanted to know why.“Because I don’t want this anymore.”Her expression tightened.“Because I missed your birthday?”“No.”“Because of Evan’s apartment?”“No.”“Then tell me what this is about. Adrian, we’ve been together seven years. You can’t suddenly end it and walk out with a suitcase.”“This isn’t sudden. You just never thought any of it mattered.”I had no interest in listing every late-night call, every excuse, every time she chose Evan and then told me I was overthinking it.If a relationship needed evidence to prove it was already broken, there was nothing left to save.“I’ve made my decision.”“I don’t agree.”I almost laughed.Claire stepped closer, slipping into the firm tone she used whenever she expected people to

“I’m going over for the project launch.”I took my phone back and kept my voice even.“The title comes with the assignment. I need to meet the team and get through the first stage.”Claire kept watching me.“How long?”“I don’t know yet.”I didn’t tell her the contract was for two years. I didn’t tell her I had no return ticket. This wasn’t the first time I had considered going back to full-time architecture.Over the years, the London firm had reached out more than once. Every time I seriously considered it, Claire found a reason staying made more sense.I had been away from a major firm too long. Starting over would be exhausting. Her career was here, and there was no reason to disrupt our life. Each time, I stayed. She never said she couldn’t bear to lose me.She only convinced me that leaving made no sense.Claire’s expression eased slightly.“You’ll come back when the project is done?”“We’ll see.”She clearly disliked the answer, but Evan cut in before she could question me again
