Chapter 3

Auteur: Stars
A week ago, I was attacked by a rogue while I was out. I survived, but I was left with injuries all over my body.

During that week in the hospital, Sebastian only dropped by to check on me now and then before leaving with the excuse that he had work.

So while I had been fighting for my life, he was busy planning a trip with another woman.

Three days later, Sebastian came home. Unlike before, I didn't help him out of his coat or bring him water.

After he settled in, he looked at the empty dining table and frowned.

"Why didn't you make dinner?"

"You came home too late. I already ate," I replied.

His frown deepened.

"I just got back from a three-day business trip, and you couldn't even make me dinner? What kind of Luna does that?"

"The housekeeper can cook for you."

"Chloe, what the hell's gotten into you these past few days?" he demanded.

"Every time I text you, you're cold. I ask what you want, and you won't tell me. And now you won't even cook for me.

"And now you won't even cook."

"You seemed to eat just fine while you were away," I replied, my voice icy.

He paused for a moment, then something seemed to dawn on him.

"So that's what this is about. You're jealous because Vivian and I went on that trip together.

"How many times do I have to tell you? She's my Beta. There's nothing between us except work. Stop being so unreasonable."

Just work?

If that were true, why would he give her a moonstone necklace?

Why did he forget our anniversary because of her?

He could lie to everyone else if he wanted, but he shouldn't lie to himself.

I stood up, not wanting to argue anymore.

"It's late. I'm going to bed. If you're hungry, help yourself to whatever's in the kitchen."

I walked back to my room without looking back.

Over the next few days, I was busy packing my things, while Sebastian worked late almost every night.

We barely spoke.

There had never been many things of mine in this house, so Sebastian didn't notice anything missing.

He simply thought I'd finally become more obedient, more understanding.

It pleased him.

What he didn't realize was that my obedience was born of detachment.

In less than two days, I would be gone.

At dinner, he suddenly said, "Vivian played a huge role in landing this deal with the other pack, so we're throwing her a celebration party. You should come with us."

I paused mid-bite.

"Why would I go?"

"I'm the Alpha, and you're the Luna. If we both attend, it'll show how highly we regard Vivian. She'll be honoured."

So my presence was just there to make someone else look good.

"Fine. I'll go."

I just wanted to see for myself what was so special about this Beta.

When the party began, Vivian was wearing a couture evening gown with the moonstone necklace Sebastian had given her around her neck.

Under the crystal chandelier, it shone so brightly it stung my eyes.

At the party, everyone crowded around Vivian like she was the center of the universe.

They chatted and laughed, talking about things I couldn't follow. I never got the chance to say a word. It was as if I were invisible.

It wasn't until the party was nearly over that Vivian finally walked toward me.

"Luna, don't you take good care of Alpha?

"His stomach's been acting up again. The doctor said it's because he hasn't been eating breakfast regularly. Sebastian is the Alpha of this pack. If anything happened to him, we'd all be heartbroken."

She did not attempt to hide the reproach in her voice.

The room fell silent.

I took a sip of my champagne. "He's not a child. Does he really need me to make sure he eats breakfast?"

Vivian blinked, her eyes immediately welling with tears. "No, I wasn't blaming you. I'm just worried about the Alpha."

"You don't need to worry about his health..."

Before I could finish, Sebastian stepped between us, his face dark.

"Chloe, are you done? It's one thing to act like this at home, but did you really have to embarrass me in front of everyone?

"Vivian was only worried about my health. Do you expect her to be as cold and indifferent as you?"

I stood up and picked up my bag from the table.

"I'm tired. I'm leaving."

I pushed open the doors without a shred of hesitation.

This was the first time I hadn't swallowed my pride just to please Sebastian.

And it would be the last.

Because in one day, I would be gone forever.

He gripped my hand, and his tears finally fell. "Chloe, I'm sorry. I know I was wrong. After you left, I realized how much I love you. I can't get used to life without you. Please come back. I'll treat you twice as well, I promise."I yanked my hand free and took a step back."You don't love me. You just can't stand losing the maid who took care of you. Leave. I don't want to see you right now."I walked around him and headed straight home.He followed me to my apartment but didn't come upstairs. He stood outside all night. The next morning when I left for work, he was gone. After Sebastian left, my life settled back into peace. For a long time after that, I heard nothing from him. Then one day, I came across a news article on my phone. Sebastian had fallen into a deep depression. He had neglected the pack for so long that everything had begun to fall apart. One pack after another ended its partnership with his. Projects ground to a halt, and the pack sank deep into debt. The pack memb

I quickly adapted to life at the company. Every day was spent running experiments and writing reports. It was busy, but incredibly fulfilling. My life was meant to be limitless, not tied down by a tiny stone. One day on my way home from work, I came across a familiar figure.Sebastian stood a few steps away from me, travel-worn, his eyes rimmed red.He looked at me as though he'd finally gotten back the treasure he'd thought he'd lost forever."Chloe, I finally found you."Seeing him again, I felt nothing at all.I gave him nothing more than a passing glance before walking right past him, as though he were a stranger. He suddenly grabbed my wrist and pulled me back to face him. He'd lost a great deal of weight and looked utterly exhausted. A few strands of gray streaked his temples, and his eyes had sunk deep into their sockets. It was as though he'd aged ten years overnight. This wretched appearance was nothing like the polished Alpha image he once had."Chloe, I know I was wrong. I r

Suddenly his phone rang.Thinking I had changed my mind, he answered excitedly."Alpha, all the paperwork for the Luna's departure from the pack has been processed. Is there anything else you need us to handle?"Sebastian was bewildered. "What departure? Who left the pack?"The officer repeated cautiously, "The... the Luna."Sebastian's eyes went wide. He had assumed that even if I broke the mate bond, I would at least stay in the pack. And as long as I was in the pack, he would find me eventually. He never imagined I would actually leave the pack entirely."Who approved her departure? How could you make that decision on your own?"They had never seen the Alpha this furious. The clerk on the other end was trembling. "During that period, you delegated some of your authority to the Beta. She was the one who approved it."Vivian?Something clicked, and he immediately sent Vivian a mind-link.The moment the link connected, Vivian's irritated voice came through."Where did you go? How could

He found a small vial in the trash. He sniffed it carefully, and his face went pale.It was the mate bond potion. He finally understood the source of that sudden, unexplained pain. He finally knew why he hadn't been able to reach me through the mind-link.I had severed our mate bond. The realization sent him collapsing onto the sofa. He stared at the empty house.Only now did he realize how few things in this house had ever been mine. So few that a single suitcase was enough to hold them all.Only then did he realize how deeply he'd grown used to having me by his side. Without me, it felt as though a part of him had been torn away.A tear slid down his cheek. The bitterness and pain threatened to consume him.Sebastian called my best friend, Megan."Where's Chloe? Do you know where she is?"Megan scoffed on the other end. "Isn't she your mate? You can't even keep track of your own mate, and you think we'd know where she is?"Sebastian buried his face in his hands, his voice shaking. "C

The moment the plane landed, I spotted a familiar figure in the crowd."Elena!" I called out to her warmly. She smiled and took the suitcase from my hand."I'm so excited that you accepted my invitation. The top student in our School of Pharmacy is finally joining my company."Three months earlier, I'd received an invitation from Elena, a senior from my university. She had just founded a pharmaceutical company and wanted me to come work for her, offering a generous salary. But at the time, all I could think about was building a life with Sebastian, so I turned her down.Even after that, Elena reached out several more times, but I never gave her a definite answer.Until I saw the moonstone necklace Sebastian had given Vivian on her Instagram.Only then did I realize that everything I had been holding onto meant nothing to Sebastian.I reached out to Elena again and accepted her offer. This job gave me the courage to walk away.Elena arranged an apartment for me. Sebastian didn't come home until noon the next day.He reeked of alcohol, with a faint trace of perfume lingering on him.I recognized the scent immediately. It was Vivian's perfume.I was packing my bags.He saw me but didn't ask where I was going or what I was doing. He just gave me a cold look and said, "Go apologize to Vivian tomorrow."My hands froze over my suitcase. I stared at him in disbelief. "What did you just say? You want me to apologize?""That was Vivian's celebration, and you had to ruin it with your childish jealousy. She feels terrible now. She thinks she offended you, and she's been crying ever since."Go apologize to her tomorrow.""I'm not apologizing." My voice was calm but firm, leaving no room for argument.Sebastian tugged at his tie and dropped onto the sofa, irritated. He pulled a small box from his pocket and opened it to reveal an exquisite moonstone necklace."I won this necklace at an auction. Isn't this what you've always wanted? Just apologize, and I'll
