Chapter 133: A New Ally

The Council’s envoys came into the square at dusk.

There were four of them and they were in gray coats and they had a herald in front of them with a paper in his hand and they stopped in the middle of the square and the whole of the pack stood around them.

“Alpha,” the herald said. “I am the herald of the full Council of Alphas and I have a paper that orders the keeper of this territory to be surrendered to the Council at once.”

I stood on the steps.

“Read it,” I said.

He read it. It said the full Council of Alphas had ruled that the curse was a Council matter and the keeper was Council property and the keeper was to be taken to Boise and held until the Council had decided what to do with him.

“The keeper is not Council property,” I said. “The keeper is a wolf of this territory and the mate of the Alpha and the father of my child.”

The square moved.

The herald looked at me.

“The Council does not recognize a keeper who is mated to a Luna,” he said. “The Council recognizes a cursed wolf.”

“Then the Council is wrong,” I said. “And the Council has been wrong for eighty-five years and the whole of the territory knows it and the whole of the north knows it.” I stepped down off the steps. “So the keeper is not going anywhere and the Council can send its envoys and its companies and its four thousand wolves and the keeper is going to stand in that circle at the full moon and the curse is going to break and the land is going to go back to the pack.”

The herald stood in the square.

And then a wolf came out of the crowd.

She was old and she was small and she had gray hair and she was wearing a dark coat and she was not one of the envoys and she was not one of the pack.

“Alpha,” she said. “My name is Margaret and I am the Alpha of the Walla Walla pack.”

I looked at her.

“You are Halloran’s cousin,” I said. “You are the one who took the name when he left.”

“I am Halloran’s cousin and I am the one who took the name when he left,” Margaret said. “And I have been the Alpha of the Walla Walla pack for twenty years and I have been on the Council of Alphas for fifteen and I voted against the chief clerk in Boise and I have been paying for it ever since.” She put her hand in her coat and took out a paper. “And I have a thing to say to this square and to these envoys and to the full Council of Alphas.”

She turned and faced the herald.

“I am the Alpha of the Walla Walla pack and I am of the founders’ line and the Luna’s line both,” she said. “And I have read the founders’ record and the register and the crates and the whole of it and I have been in the Council chamber when the chief clerk read out the claims.” She held up the paper. “And I am going to testify in front of the full Council of Alphas that the Council has been taking land from Lunas with forged claims since 1902 and that the chief clerk has been signing them and that the eleven Alphas of the north have been using the curse to keep the territories afraid.”

The square was silent.

The herald looked at her.

“Alpha,” he said. “You are on the Council.”

“I am on the Council,” Margaret said. “And I am going to resign from the Council and I am going to testify against it.” She looked at the whole of the pack. “I have been a wolf of the founders’ line for sixty years and I have been keeping my head down and signing the paper and telling myself that the decision was not mine. And then a Gamma in a wheat pack stood up in a square and told the whole of it and the Council called her a rogue.” She put the paper down. “She is not a rogue. She is the Luna. And I am going to stand in that circle at the full moon with the whole of the Walla Walla pack behind me.”

The square broke into noise.

And then the herald said, “The Council will hear of this.”

“The Council will hear of it,” Margaret said. “And the Council will hear of it from me.”

The herald turned and walked out of the square with the three envoys behind him and the whole of the pack watched them go.

I came down the steps and stood in front of Margaret.

“You are Halloran’s cousin,” I said.

“I am Halloran’s cousin,” she said. “And I am not Halloran. He wrote the letter and he has confessed to it and he is in a cell and he is going to answer for it. I did not write the letter and I did not know about the letter until the tribunal and I have been trying to find a way to answer for the whole of it ever since.” She put her hand on my arm. “Alpha. I am not asking you to forgive the founders’ line. I am asking you to let the founders’ line stand in the circle and give the land its drop and answer for what it did.”

I looked at her.

“You are the fourth line,” I said. “The Walla Walla line. And I have been looking for the Walla Walla line since Walla Walla.”

“I know you have,” Margaret said. “And I have been hiding from you because I was afraid of what you would find.” She put her hand in her coat and took out a box. “And there is a thing I have been keeping since 1954. My mother gave it to me and her mother gave it to her and it has been in the Walla Walla pack since 1891.” She opened it. “It is the founders’ seal. The original. The one they used to forge the boundary deed and the trial claims and the whole of it.”

The square was silent.

I took the box and opened it and there was a seal in it. It was brass and it had a handle of wood and it had a mark on it and the mark was the circle with the line through it.

“The founders’ seal,” I said.

“The founders’ seal,” Margaret said. “And there is a thing about it. The founders’ seal is not a Council seal. The Council has been using it for eighty-five years and the Council has never had the right to it. It is a founders’ thing and it belongs to the founders’ line and the founders’ line is standing in this square.”

I put the seal in my jacket.

“Then we have the seal,” I said. “And we have the register and the crates and the stones and the deed. And we have the whole of the north and the whole of the Luna’s line and the whole of the founders’ line.”

And then June came down the steps with a wire in her hand.

“Wren,” she said. “The wire is from the full Council of Alphas. The Council has ruled that the hearing on the curse and the keeper and the whole of it will be held in this territory at the full moon. And it says the whole of the Council is coming.”

I stood in the square.

“Then the whole of it is coming here,” I said. “And the whole of it is going to be decided in one night.”
