Chapter 4

작가: Chelsea
My phone rang. I glanced at the time before answering.

"Donna, still awake at this hour?"

Before I could reply, she added in a leisurely voice, "Waiting for the Boss? He's still here with me, you know."

I leaned back in my chair, my expression unchanged.

When I failed to react, the woman on the other end of the line began to lose patience. She let out a mocking laugh.

"Actually, I've always found something rather strange. Everyone says the Boss loves you so much."

She chuckled softly.

"However, why is it that whenever he has to make a real choice, he always ends up choosing me?

"The Guardia was one example. Your mother's brooch was another.

"Now that something has happened to me, he's suspended your authority over family affairs before he's even finished investigating."

She paused.

"Donna, I honestly can't see how much he supposedly loves you."

Her attempt to drive a wedge between Rhett and me was painfully obvious.

She and Rhett had grown up together, and she had been in love with him for more than a decade. She had always believed I had stolen him from her. In her mind, if I were out of the picture, she and Rhett would finally be together.

When she finished speaking, I let out a cold laugh and hung up.

My suitcase lay open beside the bed. I had less to pack than I expected: a few photographs my parents had left behind, my essential documents, several books I often read, and a handgun for self-defense.

As for the jewelry, gowns, and accessories Rhett had given me over the years, I left every last piece behind.

At the very bottom of my vanity drawer sat the box containing my wedding ring. I sat there for a while, staring at it.

Seven years ago, Rhett had slipped that ring onto my finger himself. Holding my hand in front of everyone, he had declared,

"From this day forward, her orders carry the same authority as mine."

Now, in that very same estate, I could not even issue a single order under Donna's name without his approval.

I removed the ring and placed it back in its box.

On the desk in my study, I laid out everything connected to the family, one item after another. At the very bottom lay the divorce papers.

At five in the morning, the car my assistant had arranged pulled up to the back entrance right on time. The driver loaded my suitcase into the trunk.

"Donna."

I turned and glanced at the estate one last time.

"Don't call me that anymore."

He stared at me in surprise, but I was already getting into the car.

At nine that morning, Rhett was still in the South District.

His underboss, Felix, hurried into the room carrying a stack of documents. Rhett was listening to a report about the previous night's accident when Felix approached him.

"Boss, all the personal accounts under Donna's name have been completely separated from the family's finances."

Rhett looked up.

"What?"

"The paperwork was finalized this morning." Felix handed him the documents. "Her personal accounts have also been completely removed from the family financial system."

Rhett slowed as he flipped through the papers.

"When was this arranged?"

"Three days ago."

The room fell silent for a moment.

Then Rhett suddenly looked up.

"Where is Nancy now?"

He pulled out his phone and called me. My number was switched off.

Rhett shot to his feet.

"Get the car ready."

His underboss hurried after him.

"Boss, what about Miss Lauren?"

"Let the doctors look after her."

The car sped all the way back to the estate. The moment Rhett arrived, he headed straight upstairs.

"Nancy!"

No one answered.

He pushed open the bedroom door. The bed had been neatly made, and dozens of gowns still hung in the closet. Not a single piece of jewelry was missing from the vanity.

He stood in the doorway for several seconds. Perhaps, even then, he still believed I had simply gone out.

Then he walked into the study, only to stop short when he spotted Donna's seal lying on the desk. He walked over and picked it up.

Beneath it were the keys and access cards that had once given me authority within the family.

At the very bottom lay a document.

[MARRIAGE DISSOLUTION AGREEMENT]

His fingers stiffened, and the color drained from his face.

The lawyer pushed the pen toward Rhett."All that remains is your signature."Rhett did not take it. His gaze remained fixed on the final page, his brows tightly furrowed."What if I refuse to sign?"The lawyer answered calmly. "She is prepared to proceed with litigation."Rhett looked up at me, his eyes bloodshot."Do you really have to go this far?""Yes."His lips pressed into a thin line, and a flicker of helpless embarrassment crossed his face. I did not rush him.Rhett lowered his eyes, his voice hoarse."I don't know what to do anymore."Hearing those words from him was so unfamiliar that I stared at him for a moment in surprise. His fingers pressed against the edge of the document, and his lashes gradually grew damp."That night in the basement... I went down there afterward. It was so cold inside."I said nothing. His eyes slowly reddened."I knew you were afraid, yet I still did that to you."I lowered my gaze and replied calmly, "That's all in the past."Rh

The next day, when I left the apartment, his car was still parked downstairs. It was there on the third day, too.On the fourth day, when I returned from the horse ranch, I found him standing by the roadside."Have you eaten?"I ignored him.He followed me."Nancy."I was beginning to lose patience."How long are you planning to stay here?"Rhett's expression stiffened."Until you agree to come home with me.""Then you can keep waiting."His expression darkened instantly, but unlike before, he did not order me to stop. That evening, I received a call from Matthew."Donna."I frowned."Don't call me that anymore."Matthew paused."Madam, the investigation into Lauren's accident is complete."My hand stopped at the rim of my cup."What happened?""The car was tampered with, but it was someone on her own team who did it. She also deliberately planted that access token in the car."I said nothing, so Matthew continued."She wanted the Boss to believe that someone was

A black sedan was parked outside my apartment building. When the car door opened, I stopped in my tracks.Rhett stepped out. It had only been a few days, but he had visibly lost weight, and faint dark circles shadowed his eyes."Nancy."I continued walking. He followed me."Come home with me."I stopped and turned to face him."You flew all the way here just to say that?"Rhett's brows knitted together."I've transferred the entire Guardia back to the estate. I've also revoked Lauren's authority. And I got your mother's brooch back for you. All right?"I shrugged."So?"His expression stiffened."What do you mean, 'so'?"I've done everything I can to put things back the way they were."Confusion crept into Rhett's voice."Now come home with me."I stared at him, unable to stop the bitter smile tugging at my lips. His expression immediately darkened."What is it this time?""Put things back the way they were," I repeated. "And then what?"Rhett's gaze grew colder b

There was a brief silence on the other end of the line. Rhett probably had not expected me to respond so curtly. When he finally spoke again, his voice had grown colder. "Send me your address.""What for?""I'm coming to get you."He sounded so casual, as if I had simply left home in a fit of anger and rented a place for a few days.I lowered my head and began unfastening my gloves."There's no need."Rhett's voice turned displeased."Are you still not done with this?"My fingers froze. "What did you just say?""I've already transferred the Guardia back. Matthew and the others will take orders only from you from now on. I'll deal with Lauren too."His tone softened."Come home. I'll let the things that happened over the past few days slide."I could not help laughing. Two short, bitter laughs escaped me, and he immediately asked, "What are you laughing at?""Rhett, do you still think I'm throwing a tantrum?""Aren't you?" His voice turned cold again. "You got angry over

Outside the window, a crystal-clear lake stretched into the distance. The house was small, but its interior was warm and inviting. That afternoon, I visited a horse ranch on the outskirts of town. Before I got married, I had loved horseback riding. When my father was still alive, he took me riding every spring. After I married Rhett, I went riding twice during the first few years. Then the family business grew more demanding, and my riding boots were tucked away in a closet, never to be worn again.A staff member led over a chestnut mare."Been a while since you last rode?"I smiled and held up seven fingers."Seven years."The staff member laughed."Take it slow, then."My arms were still a little stiff as I stepped into the stirrup and swung myself into the saddle. However, once the mare broke into a run and the wind rushed against my face, I could not help laughing out loud.By the time I dismounted, my calves were trembling from the strain.Even so, I went out and boug

At the very bottom was my signature. An icy smirk tugged at Rhett's lips."Well, look who's finally grown a backbone."Felix wisely kept his mouth shut.Rhett flipped the agreement back to the first page."Where is she?""She left the estate around five this morning. She took her usual car.""Where did she go?""We're still checking with the airport."Rhett clenched his fists, and the atmosphere around him grew even more oppressive."She walked out of the estate, and you're only telling me now that you have no idea where she went?"Sweat beaded on Felix's forehead."The men at the back entrance thought Donna was just stepping out for a while. They didn't report it."Rhett's jaw tightened."Find her."Two hours later, the flight records arrived at his study.Felix spoke in a low voice."At six this morning, a plane took off from Palmerwood. Donna was on the passenger list."Rhett's gaze turned icy."Destination?""Zerwick.""Zerwick..." He repeated the name through
