Dahlia's POV

“I read a book once where a black glow was mentioned. When they traced it, the guy who howled black turned out to be cursed. So I'm convinced Dahlia is cursed,” a student said. They were so caught up in their gossip that they didn't notice me walk into the cafeteria.

“That might not be it. She could have been touched by the moon somehow. An anomaly,” a second one said.

“I called my mom after it happened and asked why a wolf would howl black,” a third girl added. “She said the girl might be carrying forbidden blood.”

And I thought, oh wow, all these titles just for me? I stood there with my tray, frozen halfway to a table. I'd managed to keep my fear off my face, but it was loud in my head, and the system had gone suspiciously quiet. If it hadn't spoken to me in the interrogation room a few days ago, I'd have thought it was afraid of me too. Thanks to the gossip, my appetite was gone. I put my food tray back untouched.

My life has changed since the Trial by Howl. I hadn't expected things to stay the same, of course, but I hadn't expected the horrible things people were saying either. To make it worse, the only friend I'd just made had left me after what happened, and I'd walked back to my dorm to find nothing in the room but my own things.

I was back to being alone, only now it was worse. I'd never realized that the bullies, the whispers, and the side talk had been keeping me company, and now that they'd stopped I felt lonelier than ever. Even the bullies ran when they saw me, especially the guys I'd met in the woods the day before the test. At first I thought about leaving school for a while, but that wasn't possible, because we were in the last quarter of the session, and going home now would be like announcing that I'd failed.

So I decided to stay and put my attention into my studies. Whatever whispers, talk, or rumors I heard would mean nothing. I'd wait until the session ended, leave like any other normal student, and go home, where I'd ask my parents every question that had piled up in my head.

Even in biology earlier today, I noticed how Ms. Hale kept glancing at me, carefully, all through the class. There was fear in the way she looked at me, and something else I couldn't place. All the teachers looked at me differently now, and some of them seemed to have been assigned to watch my every move.

Just when I thought my system had abandoned me too, it proved me wrong.

[DING! TRIAL BY HOWL TEST HAS UNLOCKED HOST'S DORMANT ABILITIES.]

“How about you stop calling me ‘host’ and start using my name?” I said. “We only have each other now, and I'd like you to be more personal, since you're my only friend. Just call me Lia.”

[CAN BE ARRANGED. SYSTEM RECOMMENDS THAT LIA GO THROUGH SELF-TRAINING IN HIGH SECRECY.]

“Well, look at that. I've got an understanding system, and not only understanding, it cares. Since we've gotten past the formal stage, how about I give you a name and call you by it too?”

[SOUNDS COOL.]

“Then I need to think of a good one. Hmm, how about Robby? Since you're a robot, I thought something robotic would suit you. Do you like it?”

[I DO, IF YOU DO.]

“What do you mean, if I do? I love it. Okay, Robby, I need more information about what I'm supposed to train. It's confusing. I don't know what abilities I unlocked, and wouldn't knowing help me train myself?”

[YOUR UNLOCKED ABILITIES WILL REVEAL THEMSELVES WITH TIME, LIA. FOCUS ON TRAINING YOUR SPEED, STRENGTH, AND ENDURANCE.]

“Now that you mention self-training, does this have anything to do with the changes in my body since the incident? I feel lighter, my legs move too fast, and there's a sensation I can't place.”

[WHAT YOU'RE EXPERIENCING IS YOUR ABILITIES BEING UNLOCKED. KEEP IT CONFIDENTIAL.]

A knock on my door interrupted my conversation with Robby. “Come in!” I called without thinking, without even looking up. I assumed I knew who it was, either the dorm supervisor coming to move me to a more secluded room, or Gary, bringing me a plate of food because I hadn't eaten earlier.

“I… I… how are you?” a familiar female voice said, and I lifted my head. “Soraya? What… I mean, what are you doing here?” I stammered, unable to hide my excitement. I'd never expected to see Soraya in my room again.

“I've been feeling guilty, Lia. I know we only met a few days before the test, and we'd only just become friends, but when what happened to you happened and I ran, I started questioning myself. What if it had been me? What if I'd howled black too? Would I have run from myself? How would I feel if the whole world turned against me because of something I couldn't control?” She was blinking back tears, but they were stubborn, and they rolled down anyway.

The last thing I wanted was pity, but there was nothing I could do to stop Soraya from being emotional. Only she could do that.

“And then I told myself, Soraya, you're a bad friend,” she went on. “You left Lia when she needed you most. You should have given her your shoulder, you should have talked to her, you should have comforted her, and you should have been there for her no matter what.”

“So why do you want to be my friend now, after what happened? Aren't you afraid I'll swallow you whole and nobody will ever find you?” I joked.

“I've kept an eye on you since that day, Lia, and you haven't been any different from the Dahlia I met when I transferred to Northmont High. I know you wouldn't do something like that, because you're not a beast. Whatever that was, we'll figure it out together.” She opened her arms wide.

“Do you, Dahlia Reed, take me, Soraya Brown, as your legal friend, for better or for worse, in sickness and in health?” she asked, grinning, and I couldn't help smiling. Soraya was never serious.

“I'll think about it.”

“What do you mean, you'll think about it? Don't you watch movies? The answer is ‘yes, I do,’ girl.” She smacked me on the head with the small backpack she was holding.

“Yes, I do,” I said, smiling, and she pulled me into a long, tight hug. I hadn't realized how badly I needed it until I got it.

But then something shifted in me.

  • The Rejected Chubby Luna Glows Black   Double Confusion

Dahlia's point of view It felt great to be home after such long school days. Just that a lot had happened that got my mind unsettled. If I said I had recovered from what happened to me in school, then I would be lying. But somehow I could still smile. And I felt a kind of relief coming home. I would finally breathe and get answers to my questions. "Lia. You've slept long enough for someone who just came back from school. Did you even attend classes in school? Or have you been sleeping the whole session?" Rita's voice distracted me from my dreams for the umpteenth time. I was about to slap the hell out of a senior who had tried to bully me in the dream, and here she was stopping that from happening. "Don't you have chores to do in the house? Why distract such an important part of my dream? I was about to slap a bully, and you just stopped that from happening, so you should take the slap instead." I rose from bed, tossed the sheet aside, ready to play-slap Rita, but she was too fas

  • The Rejected Chubby Luna Glows Black   Eighteen

Kyren's POV One moment I was in school, and the next I was at home. That's what it's like when your father owns your school. "The Grandmaster requests your presence, Young Master," a maid called out the moment I set foot in the living room. "Just call me Kyren, as everyone else does here. Is that too difficult for you?" "I'm sorry, sir... I mean, Kyren, the Grandmaster requests your presence, Young... Kyren," she stuttered. Mylin was one of the newly recruited. Whoever owned that girl previously had tampered with something in her head. She was too respectful, and I hated it. It wasn't as if I was older than she was. "You never learn. Just get off my face." I instructed, and she went right at it but stopped mid-walk. "Young... sorry, Kyren, don't you want to know where he is?" "In the basement. I know that already, so off you go." "You need to take it easy on that girl, you know. She's just doing her duty. Forget about how she addresses you and focus on the message she's tryin

  • The Rejected Chubby Luna Glows Black   Applied Pack Dynamics

Dahlia's POV After what Kyren did to me the night before, my whole view of him changed. How could anyone be so cold and heartless? I'd needed help; he'd seen me clearly, and he'd chosen to ignore me. I could have died out there if Robby hadn't pulled me through. Had he been planning to watch me die? I should have expected it from him, considering everything he'd witnessed at the Trial by Howl, but I hadn't expected someone who could have helped at the moment I was nearly killed to hold back because of a black howl. Soraya shifted on her bed; her sleepy eyes landed on me. “Where were you last night, Lia?” she asked, half asleep. “I looked everywhere for you in the middle of the night; you were nowhere, and then you just showed up this morning.” I stared at my hands, picking at invisible dirt. “I went to the kitchen to get some food, but I came back not long after. I didn't want to wake you,” I lied. There was no way Raya would have believed me if I'd said I was in the bathroom, bec

  • The Rejected Chubby Luna Glows Black   Training Gone Wrong

Dahlia's POVI was relieved by Soraya's apology the day before, and grateful too, and a little happy that after everything, someone still felt that way about me. If you asked me, I'd say having more than one friend comes with its own dangers, but I was fine with Soraya being mine. We talked until late that night, though I made sure she did most of the talking, just like before, while I listened. When she asked about my howl, I gave her the same answer I'd given the Council during the questioning. Then I watched her fall asleep and sneaked out as usual, only this time I had a purpose. I was going to start training myself. Even if the system hadn't pushed me to do it, I knew I needed the training more than ever, because after what I'd done to Lunara's friends, I was sure they'd stop at nothing to get back at me. Unless they were scared of me now, like everyone else.I waited until it was properly dead of night before I slipped out of my room. I wasn't worried about meeting anyone in the

  • The Rejected Chubby Luna Glows Black   The Interrogation

Author's NarrationDahlia woke up to silence, the kind that presses against ears. She hadn't expected to wake up in her dorm room, or anywhere else in the school that felt safe, because she knew exactly where what happened earlier would land her: the interrogation room. The room was round and buried deep in the heart of Northmont High, and hardly anyone knew it was there. Only the few students who'd been called in for questioning had ever seen it, and they'd all been warned not to repeat a word of what was said inside, not even to their parents, unless the school decided to bring their parents in.A ring of pale light hung over the room without so much as a flicker. Chairs were set in a wide arc in front of Dahlia, five of them taken and one still empty. Whoever was meant to sit there hadn't arrived yet, and it looked like nothing would start until the fellow did. Dahlia knew the faces of the elders in the room, though she'd never seen most of them in person, only in photos. In the mi
