“He almost killed the messenger.”

Cassian didn’t look up from the report in his hand. “When he heard you were alive.”

I laughed. Cold. Hollow.

“…Good.”

The spies laid it all out before the council … corrupt officials executed, elders thrown in chains, the investigation into my rejection torn wide open, Selene under lock and guard, the healer’s killers hunted down one by one. A man who barely slept anymore, they said. A man obsessed. A man breaking apart at the seams, tearing his own kingdom to pieces looking for a version of the truth that might finally let him forgive himself.

Cassian watched me carefully, setting the report aside like he already knew the answer wasn’t going to be the one I gave. “Does hearing that change anything?”

“No,” I said, too fast.

My hands were shaking in my lap. I pressed them flat against my thighs, but it was already too late … he’d seen, and he didn’t call me a liar out loud, which somehow felt worse than if he had.

I threw myself into training instead of sitting with it. Swords splintered under my strikes one after another, wood and steel alike, my knuckles raw before the first hour had passed. Every spell I cast tore light across the yard hard enough to leave scorch marks in stone that hadn’t been there that morning. My wolf grew sharper by the day, stronger, harder to hold back, like something in me had decided grief made better fuel than discipline ever had.

Cassian barely caught my blade during a sparring match that afternoon, the shockwave of it cracking clean through the enchanted arena wall behind him, dust raining down over both of us while he stared at the damage with something between pride and alarm.

The High Priestess stared at the wreckage, pale, one hand pressed to her chest. “She’s growing far faster than the prophecy predicted.”

That night I locked my door and let myself finally fall apart.

Weeks of being strong for everyone else cracked open all at once … for the girl who used to beg silently for his eyes to soften, for the Luna cast out in front of a hall full of strangers, for the woman who still, infuriatingly, remembered the exact shape of his smile.

I looked into the mirror and hated the reflection a little.

“I hate that part of me still loves him.”

Outside my door, my father heard every word of it. I only learned later that he’d walked away with his own eyes wet, unwilling to let me know I hadn’t cried alone.

A royal messenger arrived the next morning with news that swallowed the grief whole. Every major kingdom had been summoned to the Summit of the Twelve Alphas … the first gathering since my awakening had shaken the world.

Cassian read the guest list aloud, steady, until his jaw locked around one name.

“Blackthorn Kingdom.”

Silence. Every eye in the room found me.

I smiled instead of flinching … slow, calm, a little dangerous, even to my own ears.

“Good. I’m tired of hiding.”

They opened the treasury that afternoon and drew the Moon Crown out from beneath centuries of sealed magic … a crown that had rejected every ruler who’d dared reach for it, its silver surface cold enough to fog the glass case around it.

“If it refuses you,” Seraphine warned, voice tight, hands folded like she was already bracing to watch me die, “…it will kill you.”

I reached for it anyway, before fear could talk me out of it, my fingers trembling an inch from the metal while every noble in the room held their breath behind me.

It rose off its cushion on its own and settled onto my head like it had been waiting there my whole existence. No pain. No resistance. Just a quiet, certain weight, cool against my scalp, like coming home to a body I hadn’t known I owned.

The room didn’t breathe for a long moment. Then someone … I never learned who … began to weep, and the sound of it broke the silence wide open.

The days before the summit turned the palace into a war room disguised as a dressing room. Tailors and weapon masters worked side by side. My gown hid enchanted armor beneath silver silk. My crown doubled as a magical seal. Even my heels concealed blades thin enough to vanish into the hem.

Cassian grinned when he saw the finished result. “Mother would’ve loved this.”

I let myself smile back, even with dread coiling tight beneath my ribs.

Hundreds of miles away, Lucien was refusing ceremonial robes in favor of the same armor he’d worn the night he marked me his.

His Beta studied him carefully. “You still think she’ll forgive you?”

“No,” Lucien said. A long pause. “…I just want her to know I never stopped loving her.”

The Summit Hall was the largest gathering I’d ever seen … kings, queens, Alphas, Lycans, vampire ambassadors, witch elders, all of them crowded beneath a ceiling of stained glass. The herald’s voice cracked through the noise.

“Her Majesty…”

The doors opened, and the entire hall went silent.

No one saw the rejected Luna walk through that door. I felt it in the way every spine in the room straightened, the way even the rulers who refused to bow still couldn’t look away from the crown gleaming above me.

Across the hall, Lucien looked up.

Our eyes met, and for one unbearable second the entire room disappeared. He forgot to breathe … I watched him forget, watched his chest go still, watched something in his face come undone at the sight of a woman who no longer resembled the one he’d destroyed. His hand had gone rigid at his side, fingers curling like he wanted to cross the hall and had ordered himself not to.

The old bond stirred faintly in my chest, a single warm pulse I hated myself for feeling, traitorous and small and impossible to stamp out completely no matter how many nights I’d spent trying.

I crushed it under every one of those nights and looked away first, chin lifted, refusing to let three hundred strangers watch me falter twice in one lifetime.

The herald had barely begun listing my titles when the ceiling exploded inward.

Glass rained down in glittering shards. Dark shapes dropped through the wreckage on ropes of black smoke, the same mark from the bounty notices stitched into their hoods. One landed directly between Lucien and me, blade already drawn, smiling like he’d been waiting his whole life for this exact moment.

“Perfect.”

His eyes found mine, gleeful. “Now every kingdom will watch their queen die.”

Before I could summon a single spark of silver light, Lucien moved.

He threw himself between us, and the black blade meant for my heart plunged toward his instead.

“Who’s the father?” Orion asked quietly.I couldn’t make myself say his name.He closed his eyes.“…Lucien.”It wasn’t a question. It was the sound of a father’s heart breaking for his daughter.⸻“The spy can wait,” Orion told the guard, not even turning his head. “My daughter cannot.”The guard vanished back down the path, and my father sank onto the stone bench beneath the moon trees, waiting for me to finish what I’d barely started, his hands folded so tightly together his knuckles had gone pale.I told him everything. The crystals. The healer’s trembling hands. Not one child.Four.His face moved through disbelief, then grief, then something harder … rage that had nowhere to land … before settling into a guilt so raw it made my own chest ache to watch it settle over him, his shoulders curling inward like the weight of it was physical.“If I’d found you sooner,” he said, voice cracking down the middle, “…none of this would have happened.”I had no comfort to offer him. I wasn’t su

“Your Majesty…” the royal healer whispered, her hand frozen above my stomach. “When was the last time you shared a Moon Bond with your mate?”I felt every drop of blood leave my face.“…Before he rejected me.”The healer closed her eyes.“Oh… Moon Goddess.”⸻I’d slipped out of my chambers before sunrise, careful to avoid Cassian’s watchful eyes and Orion’s early rounds, my bare feet silent against cold stone, my heart hammering the entire way down those corridors like I was doing something wrong instead of something necessary. I told myself the pulses in the garden had been exhaustion, nothing more.I told the healer the same lie the moment I sat down across from her.She didn’t believe it for a second, her eyes narrowing slightly even as her hands stayed gentle. The moment she laid her silver crystals across my stomach, they lit up brighter than I’d ever seen them glow, throwing sudden light across the whole chamber, and her calm, professional expression cracked straight down the mi

“Your Majesty…” the blood-soaked guard gasped, collapsing onto one knee. “The northern border has fallen.”The room went silent. Then he looked straight at me.“They weren’t looking for land… they were looking for you.”⸻The torches had barely been relit after the dark voice in the summit hall vanished as fast as it came, guards still sweeping the corridors for whoever had spoken, when this new horror staggered through the doors and finished what the first one started.Entire patrols slaughtered along the northern border. No pack insignia on the attackers. Military precision, not raiding chaos. And one question, repeated to every dying soldier before the killing blow.Where is the Chosen Queen. One soldier, the guard said, voice cracking, had lived just long enough to whisper that the attackers knew our patrol routes before they arrived. Someone inside Silvercrest had handed them the map. This wasn’t an invasion. It was a hunt, and I was the only thing they were hunting.⸻Orion call

“Tell me something, Alpha…” I said before he could speak. “Did you come here to apologize… or to watch the woman you destroyed wear a crown?”Silence crashed between us.For the first time since rejecting me, Alpha Lucien Blackthorn had no answer.⸻Three days had passed since the blade meant for me had opened a wound in his shoulder instead … a wound my own guards had barely stopped from becoming a grave. He still favored that side, I noticed, a stiffness in the way he stood that no amount of composure could hide.I hadn’t thanked him for it. I wasn’t sure I owed him that, even now.The summit reconvened once the hall had been repaired, torches relit, glass swept from the marble. I walked in crowned in silver, flanked by Orion on one side and Cassian on the other, and watched every Alpha who’d once looked at me like a pitiable, wolfless embarrassment rise instead like the floor itself had commanded it.Lucien rose slowest of all. I felt his stillness more than I saw it … the particul

Lucien“Tell me the truth.”I slammed the forged letter onto Selene’s table hard enough to rattle her teacup. “Or I’ll burn every lie in this pack to the ground.”She looked at the paper. Unhurried. Then she smiled, and it was the smile that told me everything before she said a word.“…So you finally started asking the right questions.”⸻She was still pouring tea when I’d stormed in, still perfectly composed, like grief and rage hadn’t just carried me across half the manor at a dead run. “You’ve been avoiding me, Alpha,” she said, not even glancing up, the steam curling lazy between us.I threw the letter to the floor instead of answering. “Did you write this?”She glanced down at it, almost bored, and laughed … short, genuine, worse than any denial. “No.” A pause, savoring it, her eyes finding mine over the rim of the cup. “Someone far smarter did.”I realized then, watching her, that she had never once been afraid of me. Not during the rejection, when I’d stood two feet from her re
