Raven's POV

The pack hall was full when we arrived. I could hear the noise from outside. The kind of energy that comes with a large gathering.

I stood outside the main doors with my son against my chest, Alaric beside me, and eleven warriors at our backs. I took one breath, then nodded at Alaric, and he pushed the doors open.

The noise stopped almost immediately.

Alaric's POV I got the message from my father's contact on a Wednesday morning while Raven was feeding Cael. It said the council had opened a formal investigation into Gilma Ebonis and that my testimony would be requested within the week. I put my phone down and told Raven. She looked up from Cael and said, "About time." "You're not surprised?" I said. "Gilma spent years pushing Luella into everything that happened," she said. "She helped her slip the pack arrest too, so no, I am not surprised at all." I went to the council building two days later and gave my testimony to a panel of three members. I told them everything I knew about Gilma's role, the visit to Luella while she was under pack arrest, the contact that helped Luella get out of the house on the night she took Cael and the years of documented pressure on her daughter, which the psychiatric ward's intake assessment had already flagged as a contributing factor to Luella's condition. The panel asked clear questions and I

Raven's POV I woke up and lay still for a moment because I was waiting for the feeling that had been there every morning for months. That heavy pressing thing that sat on my chest before I even opened my eyes and reminded me of everything wrong and everything that still needed to be fixed. It did not come. I opened my eyes and looked at the ceiling of the safe house. The room was quiet and bright. Nothing seemed out of place. Cael was not in his crib and the blanket was slightly pushed aside, which meant Alaric had him. I lay there for another minute just because I could and because nobody needed anything from me right this second. That felt new enough that I wanted to sit in it for a moment before the day started. Then I got up. Alaric was in the kitchen, holding Cael against his shoulder and a cup of coffee on the table in front of him. He was reading something on his phone with one hand and patting Cael's back slowly with the other. He looked up when I came in and said, "Morn

Raven's POV The hall was still buzzing when the warriors took Dante out. I stood there watching the doors close behind him and felt something settle in my chest that had not been settled in a long time. Lord Thorne was speaking with the Valkhor Alpha on the platform and the crowd was breaking into smaller groups. Everyone was talking at once, and I just stood in the middle of it all, holding my son, letting the noise wash around me without trying to follow any particular thread. Alaric came to stand beside me. I looked at his leg and said, "How does it feel?" "Better than twenty minutes ago," he said. "That is not a real answer," I said. "It's sore but it's fine," he said. "Luella knew what she was doing." I looked toward the side entrance where Luella had walked out with the warrior behind her, and I said, "I need to go after her." Alaric looked at me. "Are you sure?" "Yes," I said. I passed the baby to him carefully and he took him. I went toward the side entrance and the w

Raven's POV I watched Alaric go down on one knee. I was moving before I even decided to move, but one of the warriors beside me put his arm out and stopped me and said, "Stay back." Dante was on his feet. He was breathing hard and there was blood on his face from the fight, but he was standing. Alaric was on one knee with his hand pressed against his leg. I could see the dagger still on the floor where Dante had dropped it. I could see the way Alaric's face had gone tight and pale in a way that had nothing to do with exhaustion. The hall was loud now, and both Alphas were on their feet. Lord Thorne was already moving down from the platform. Two warriors had stepped forward toward Dante, but he held up a hand and said loudly enough for the whole room to hear, "Nobody touches me until she gives me her answer." Everyone went still. Dante looked at me and said, "That blade was coated and he has about an hour before it does permanent damage. So I suggest you stop looking at him and s

Alaric's POV The fight had not started yet, and already the hall felt different from when we walked in. This was because the evidence presentation had done something to the room that no amount of ceremony preparation could undo. I could feel it in the way people were standing and the way nobody was talking. I stood in the center of the cleared space and watched Dante roll his sleeves up. I used that time to breathe steadily and settle into myself because going into a fight with anything other than a clear head was the fastest way to lose it. Before Dante could move toward me, the Valkhor Alpha held up a hand and said, "Before this proceeds, I want the record to reflect the full extent of the charges being made so that whatever happens in this fight takes place with complete transparency." He looked at Lord Thorne, and he stood and addressed the hall directly. "Jake Bramwell," he said. "You are formally charged with fabricating council evidence, bribing pack warriors, coercing a

The noise stopped almost immediately. The shift in attention was immediate and complete, as every person in the hall recalculated what our presence meant for the ceremony they had come to witness. Everyone turned and the silence moved through the room like something physical. I walked in beside Alaric and kept my eyes forward. I did not look at any single face in the crowd because I knew if I started looking, I would find one that made me want to stop walking. Stopping was not something I was going to do today. Dante was standing at the front of the hall near the ceremonial table and he was dressed formally. His expression came apart in stages. Firs

Raven's POV Friday morning, I woke up before dawn feeling restless. Breeze had been pushing at me all night trying to get my attention. I finally gave in and got out of bed. "What do you want?" I asked her. "We need to connect," she said. "Really connect. Not just talking, but bonding." "How d

Raven's POV Wednesday afternoon, Alaric showed up at my house with a determined look on his face. "We're going somewhere," he said. "Where?" I asked. "To see a healer," he said. "A real one, not the pack doctor who reports everything to Alpha Marcus." "I can't afford a healer," I said. "I'm

Raven's POV Thursday morning, I walked into school and immediately knew something was wrong. People were staring at me more than usual, and when I passed groups in the hallway, they would stop talking and whisper. "What's going on?" I asked Breeze. "I don't know, but I don't like it," she said.

Raven's POV Tuesday started like any other exhausting day. I woke up at five for my morning dog walking job, then went to school. After school, I had three tutoring sessions back to back, followed by a shift at the pack market selling jewelry until nine. By the time I got home, I was so tired, b
