Not This Time.....

Judith had spent three years loving Liam Smith.

Three years making excuses for him.

Three years convincing herself that one day he would look at her and see more than a responsibility, a contract or a familiar presence in his home.

The worst part wasn't that Liam had been cruel.

It was that he hadn't been.

Cruelty was easier to hate.

Indifference was harder to heal from.

Because every disappointment came wrapped in hope.

Maybe next time.

Maybe next month.

Maybe next year.

Until eventually there was nothing left to hope for.

The morning after Liam admitted his feelings to himself, Judith arrived at Lux Group expecting an ordinary day.

Unfortunately, ordinary days seemed to have abandoned her life.

Her assistant entered looking nervous.

"Miss Lux."

Judith looked up from her laptop.

"What's wrong?"

"Mr. Smith is here."

She froze.

For a moment, she genuinely thought she had misheard.

"Liam?"

"Yes."

Her assistant hesitated.

"He refuses to leave."

A headache immediately began forming.

Liam was waiting in her office when she walked in.

He stood the moment he saw her.

The sight was strangely familiar.

Once upon a time, she would have been happy to see him.

Now she simply felt cautious.

"What are you doing here?"

Liam looked unusually serious.

"I wanted to talk."

"About the baby?"

"No."

That answer immediately put her on guard.

Judith closed the office door.

Then crossed her arms.

"Then what?"

For several seconds, Liam simply looked at her.

As though he was trying to figure out where to begin.

Finally he spoke.

"I made a mistake."

A small laugh escaped her.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was absurd.

One mistake?

Was that really what he thought this was?

"I know I wasn't a good husband."

The words sounded sincere and Judith hated that.

Because sincere Liam was much harder to resist than indifferent Liam.

"You weren't a bad person, Liam."

His expression softened.

"Judith—"

"You just weren't there."

The room fell silent.

She wasn't angry.

That somehow made it worse.

"I kept waiting for you."

Liam's chest tightened.

Judith looked away briefly.

Toward the large windows overlooking the city.

"I waited on birthdays."

Her voice remained calm.

"I waited on anniversaries."

Liam lowered his gaze.

"I waited after work."

Another pause.

"I waited every time you promised we'd spend time together."

Each sentence landed harder than the last.

Not because she was accusing him.

Because she wasn't.

She was simply telling the truth.

And the truth hurt.

"You know what finally broke me?"

Judith looked back at him.

For the first time, Liam realized her eyes weren't filled with anger.

They were filled with exhaustion.

The kind that came from loving someone for too long.

"I stopped expecting anything."

The words hit him like a punch.

Because he remembered that version of Judith.

The quieter version.

The one who stopped asking him to attend events, stopped inviting him to dinner and even stopped waiting up at night.

At the time, he'd thought she was becoming independent.

Now he understood.

She had been giving up.

Liam took a slow breath.

"I love you."

The confession left the room completely silent.

Judith stared at him.

A year ago, hearing those words would have meant everything.

A month before the divorce, she would have cried from happiness.

Now all she felt was sadness.

Not because she didn't believe him.

Because she did.

For the first time, she truly believed him.

And that made everything worse.

"You do."

Liam frowned.

The response wasn't what he expected.

"You believe me?"

"Yes."

His heart skipped.

Then she shattered the hope before it could fully form.

"But it doesn't change anything."

The words lingered between them.

It was painful and final.

Liam felt something sink inside his chest.

"Why?"

Judith looked at him quietly.

"Because loving me now is easy."

The statement caught him off guard.

She continued.

"You realized what you lost."

A small smile appeared.

Heartbreaking but beautiful.

"But I lived through the part where you didn't realize it."

Liam couldn't argue.

Because she was right.

Every single word was true.

For the first time in years, Liam didn't know how to fix a problem.

Because there were no strategies or solution for this problems.

Just consequences.

Consequences of choices he'd made long before he understood their cost.

"I don't expect forgiveness."

His voice was low.

"I know."

"I don't expect you to trust me immediately."

"I know."

"Then what do I do?"

The question sounded almost helpless.

And Liam Smith hated sounding helpless.

Judith looked at him for a long moment.

Long enough for him to understand how serious her answer would be.

Then she spoke.

"You be a father."

The simplicity of the answer stunned him.

Nothing about reconciliation.

Nothing about romance.

Nothing about second chances.

Just the baby.

Just responsibility.

Just showing up.

"You be a father," she repeated softly. "And if you're truly different now, eventually people will see it."

People?

Not her.

People.....

The distinction wasn't accidental.

When Liam finally left the office, Judith remained standing by the window.

Her hands trembled slightly.

Not because she regretted what she'd said.

Because she didn't.

The truth was, a small part of her still loved him.

That was the problem.

If she didn't love him anymore, rejecting him would have been easy.

But she did.

And that was exactly why she couldn't give him another chance.

Not yet.

Maybe not ever.

Because she refused to build her future on promises.

She had already done that once.

This time, she wanted proof.

Across the city, Liam sat alone in his car long after arriving home.

Judith's words replayed in his mind.

Loving me now is easy.

For the first time, he understood something important.

Winning Judith back wasn't going to happen because he finally said the right words.

It would happen because of what he did next.

And for a man who had spent most of his life speaking through actions rather than emotions, perhaps that was exactly how it should be.

Forever, This Time...Three Months LaterThe Smith mansion had never been this noisy. Not because of business meetings. Not because of family gatherings. Not because of corporate events.Because of one tiny baby girl.Liam stood in the nursery holding his daughter while she stared at him with wide, curious eyes."You know," he said seriously, "your mother is unreasonable."The baby blinked.Clearly listening."She says I can't buy you a pony."The baby made a small sound.Liam nodded."Exactly."The nursery door opened.Judith walked in."Who are you conspiring with?"Liam immediately looked innocent."Nobody."Their daughter chose that exact moment to squeal.Judith crossed her arms."She's definitely your daughter.""Because she's adorable?""Because she's helping you lie."Liam grinned.Three months into parenthood, he was still ridiculously obsessed with their daughter. Not that Judith was any better. The only difference was that she pretended to be rational.Liam didn't bother pr

Welcome to the World.....By four o'clock in the morning, Judith had officially decided that childbirth was a terrible idea.A truly terrible idea. The fact that it was too late to change her mind only made things worse."Liam."He immediately looked up from beside the hospital bed."Yeah?""This is your fault."Liam blinked. The nurse laughed. The doctor laughed.Even Judith looked like she knew the accusation made no sense.Unfortunately for Liam, logic wasn't particularly useful at that moment."I'm sorry.""You should be."Another contraction hit before she could continue.Judith grabbed his hand so hard he was fairly certain she was testing the limits of human bone strength. When it finally passed, she released him and took a slow breath.Liam looked at his hand. Then at her. Then back at his hand."I think that's the third time you've almost broken my fingers.""You'll survive."The nurse nodded."You'll definitely survive."Liam was beginning to suspect nobody in the room respe

The Worst Day to Go Into Labor...Judith was thirty-six weeks pregnant when she decided she was perfectly capable of attending a board meeting.Everyone else disagreed.Especially Liam."You're not going."Judith looked up from her breakfast."Watch me."Liam sighed. They were sitting in the dining room of the Lux estate, where he had somehow become a permanent fixture. At this point, nobody questioned it anymore.Even Julian had stopped complaining.Mostly."You were in the hospital three weeks ago.""I was fine.""The doctor said rest.""The doctor also said I could move around.""Not for twelve-hour meetings."Judith ignored him and continued eating.Across the table, Eleanor quietly moved her chair farther away.Richard did the same.Years of marriage had taught them when an argument was about to happen. And when survival required distance."I'll only be there for a few hours."Liam gave her a look. The kind that clearly said he didn't believe a word she was saying.Unfortunately,

The next few weeks went by surprisingly fast.Judith was now officially forbidden from going to the office unless absolutely necessary, which meant she spent most of her time working from home and complaining about it.Nobody sympathized.Especially not Liam."I'm bored."Liam glanced up from his laptop. They were sitting in the library at the Lux estate, both supposedly working."That's unfortunate."Judith narrowed her eyes."You don't care.""I care deeply.""You don't sound like it."Liam smiled without looking up."I've heard this exact complaint seventeen times this week.""You're exaggerating.""It was nineteen."Judith grabbed a cushion and threw it at him.Unfortunately, she missed.Liam looked far too pleased with himself. Before she could launch a second attack, her phone rang. She glanced at the screen. Her mother.Immediately suspicious."Hello?""Don't make plans for Saturday."Judith frowned."What plans?""You don't need to know."That was never a good sign."Mom.""Sa

Getting back together was surprisingly anticlimactic. There were no headlines. No dramatic announcements. No grand gestures. One day Judith and Liam were divorced people trying to co-parent, and the next they were somehow acting like a married couple again. The only difference was that this time they actually talked to each other.A lot.Three days after their conversation in the garden, Judith was sitting in the living room when Ava stormed into the house."Is it true?"Judith didn't even look up from her book."Good afternoon, Ava.""It's true."Judith sighed."Who told you?""Liam."That made her look up."He told you?"Ava looked deeply offended."Do you know how long I've been waiting for this?"Before Judith could respond, Ava threw herself onto the couch."I deserve compensation.""For what?""For emotional damages.""You weren't emotionally damaged.""I absolutely was."Judith laughed. For the first time in a long while, the future didn't feel complicated. It felt normal. And

The Answer....Judith barely slept that night. Not because she didn't know what she wanted. The problem was that she did.For years, she had imagined Liam standing in front of her and telling her he loved her. She had imagined him fighting for her, choosing her, seeing her.Now that it had happened, she couldn't stop thinking about everything that came with it.Love wasn't the issue.Trust was.Liam had spent months proving he had changed, but part of her still remembered the woman who used to sit alone at dinner while her husband worked late. The woman who waited for calls that never came. The woman who convinced herself that being lonely was normal.By the time the sun rose, Judith was still awake. And exhausted.Around eight o'clock, there was a knock on her bedroom door. Before she could answer, Ava walked in carrying coffee and a bag of pastries."You look terrible.""Good morning to you too."Ava sat down on the bed."You didn't sleep."Judith groaned."Is it that obvious?""You

Liam didn't sleep, he couldn't sleep. He sat in his study until nearly dawn, a glass of untouched whiskey on the table beside him.The city lights outside gradually disappeared as morning arrived, but his thoughts remained exactly where they had been for the past twelve hours.Judith was pregnant.

The following week, that was on Thursday, Judith had her prenatal checkup. She hated hospitals and it wasn't because she was afraid of them but because they were boring, very boring and most things she didn't understand.Unfortunately, nobody seemed to care about her opinion.Especially not Julian.

Liam didn't think about Judith for the rest of the night. At least, that was what he told himself.Unfortunately, his mind disagreed. The moment he got home, he found himself remembering small details from the auction. The way she smiled when speaking to Ethan. The confidence she carried now, the f
