LOGINASHLEY.
I walked out of the organization as my phone rang again. Incessant this time so I couldn't ignore it. 'What do you want this time, mom?' I said the last part with so much venom. Not like the woman deserved any good from me. 'That’s no way to greet your mom, daughter. Or should I say step-mom?' She giggled. I continued walking, needing to get to the bus stop. I had another interview for a waitresimg job. It's a plan B in case I don't get this job. I didn't reply to her, just wanting to get over with this conversation. “Money. I want money.” she finally said. “I told you that I got fired.” “Lily would suffer for it,” she said sweetly. I stopped walking and clenched my fist. "Don't you dare do anything to her,” I seethed out. She chuckled. “I want it before the end of today.” With that, she hung up on me. She was my dad's worst mistake. My actual mom died when I was a toddler. It's my dad and I until I turned eight. He met her and decided she was his second chance at love. They got married a few months after they met. I thought she was going to be my mom - my chance of experiencing a mother's love. Melissa was a cunning two-faced bitch. Acted sweetly anytime my dad was around and the opposite when he wasn't. Memory of her getting a call from the hospital played in my head. Her teary face and one year old Lily's loud wails. It's the longest drive of my life. I could remember the doctor’s actual words. "Sorry, we couldn't save him. He suffered serious injuries from the car crash.” It felt like the world came crashing down on me. Life after that wasn't normal. I was saddled with the responsibility of taking care of Lily since her mom was busy drowning herself in drugs and alcohol. She did love my dad, that's clear. But she's never a good mom to Lily. She hated her because she looked exactly like my dad. She never missed a chance to tell her that Just like me, Lily couldn't get the love of her mother. I studied hard to get a full scholarship ride to study at NYU. I couldn't leave this city because of Lily. I worked so many jobs to take care of myself. I have tried taking custody of her many times, but she's always one step ahead. Playing the role of a perfect mother anytime I send officials over. She needed my money to get high. My life truly sucked. I headed back to the bus stop and entered the available bus. I had less than an hour to get to the restaurant. I plugged in my AirPods while staring out at the bustling streets of the city that ‘never sleeps.’ Even though I had a lot of bad memories surrounding this city but I couldn't imagine myself leaving. It's a beautiful city. I straightened my dress when I reached my destination. Most of the seats were occupied. I walked around until I spotted a girl sitting behind a desk. I sauntered off to her, and she looked up at me. "Cash or card? Where's your bill?" I shook my head quickly. "I am here for the interview." She nodded in understanding while asking for my name. "Ashley Walker." She typed away on her computer before giving me the direction to the manager's office. "Thank you," I said. She smiled. I strode off in the direction and stopped in front of the office. I knocked softly on the door and waited for the usual response. I entered the office and saw a middle-aged woman sitting there. "Hello, ma'am," I said as she gestured for me to sit. "Ashley Walker?" I nodded in response. "Have you ever waited a table before?" I nodded. "I waited tables in both high school and college." "Good. You can start immediately." My eyes widened at her words. "Now? Like right now?" Her eyes narrowed at me. She definitely wasn't going to win the best boss of the year. "Yes, do you have a problem with that? We're short of staff as it is. We pay our staff weekly. You will work five days in a week," she paused while handing me a paper. "Those are the available shifts left. You can choose your five days and time you want to work there." I couldn't help the smile as I stared at the times available. If I got his personal assistant, I could do both. Most of the available shifts were in the evening, so I should be retiring for the night as his personal assistant. I took up the weekend shifts, too, so I can have two days of rest during the week. I handed the paper back to her, and she typed into her computer. She handed me another paper. It contained the rules and regulations. One was written in bold letters : CUSTOMERS ARE ALWAYS RIGHT! I was used to bitchy customers so that wasn't going to be a problem. "Meet with the girl behind the desk outside and tell her to direct you to Rose. She would show you around and explain how things go around here. You can start your job after that." "Thank you, ma'am." "Don't make me regret this," she deadpanned. "You wouldn't." She gestured to the door and I walked to it. I stepped out and did as instructed. Rose's a bubbly personality. She showed me around and handed me my uniform. A white short sleeve shirt and blue skirt that reached inches above my knee. I was glad that it wasn't slutty or anything. Time passed in a blur. Waitressing was hard, and I was just getting used to it again. Rose was the only friend I made today. I got a few tips. I sent some money to Melissa from the little savings I had. I couldn't let anything happen to Lily. I started the long walk to our cramped apartment in the unsafest part of New York. It's the best we can find. I kept glancing over my back to be sure no one was following me. My pepper spray in one hand and my taser in the other. They always helped whenever someone tried to mob me. I took the staircase up to our apartment after greeting our landlord downstairs. Our apartment was small. It's something the landlord put together when she needed another type of income. My phone buzzed in my pocket, and I took it out after slamming the door shut. I settled on the only available sofa in our living room. It's a mail from Bianchi Inc. I bit my lips as I tapped the message. It read: We're pleased to inform you that you were chosen to be the personal assistant to the CEO. Work starts tomorrow. Report to the office at 8 am sharp. There are attached documents containing all you need to know. Congratulations, Miss Walker. Best regards, Bianchi Inc. I screamed into the pillow, and my face broke into the hugest smile. This's going to change my life for the better. I knew it. Bonus Chapter! Thanks for choosing my story. Xoxo -Aridah.ASHLEY. "A!" A voice squealed before hands wrapped around me.I didn't need to turn around before I knew who.The smell. She smelled like home. The struggles we have been through. The Ashley Walker before this fantasy. "L!" I sighed, hugging her just as tight.I pulled away, slightly. My hands moved on their own. Checking, searching.Bruises. Scars.New ones.My fingers traced them carefully, like I could erase them if I tried hard enough.Scars given by the one person who was supposed to protect her.My throat tightened. This was why I stayed away. Why I made excuses.Because seeing it… made it real. She gently pulled her hand from mine and tugged her sleeve down."A," she called softly."I am... sorry."The words felt useless the moment they left my mouth. I couldn't meet her eyes. "It is not your fault, A," she started. "You are doing everything you can."My laugh came out hollow."My best isn’t enough."I dropped onto the bench, pressing my palms together to steady myself.Wh
ASHLEY.I tied my hair into a ponytail and walked out of my room. I headed to Luciana's to check up on her.I wanted to run this morning to stay in shape. But it's more than that. It's to get over the fact that we almost kissed. And the fact that I was meeting with Lily later. It has been only a few hours.I entered her room and heard her soft snores. She's a good one. I don't know why anyone wouldn't like her.Except her father, of course. He hasn't warmed up to her yet. I wasn't sure if he would ever accept her as his child. She's innocent in all this, yet she's the victim. The mother abandoned her, and her father wanted nothing to do with her.It truly sucked. She will ask questions when she grows older.By then, I hope they will be present in her life. I patted her hair before slowly walking out, careful not to wake her up. I could hear pots clanking even before I entered the kitchen. "Good morning, Kat," I said while opening the fridge. She looked more healthy now. She gav
ASHLEY. When did I realize I had a serious problem? And Maya's assumption might be right. When he walked through that door wearing that glasses looking like a sexy nerd.I didn't even know I was into guys with glasses until then. Of all nights, I decided to skip dinner. A night I had to come prepare something because that decision was bad.It had to be the night he came down still wearing those glasses.Thank goodness he came in minutes after I finished dancing. I wouldn't be able to face him again if he saw me doing that. The universe hates me so much. "I hope you like red wine," his voice came up behind me.I collected the glass from him, avoiding the tiniest contact. "Yes, I do. Thank you."He shrugged as I took a sip. I almost moaned. It tasted expensive, something I wasn't used to. Something I couldn't afford.Today's the day I had to face my sister. I was dreading it. I wasn't ready to see the new scars she will be hiding under her long sleeve hoodie. Knowing I was resp
NICHOLAS. "Welcome onboard. Flight Chicago to New York. We leave in five minutes. Ensure to fasten your seatbelt and read the safety guidelines," my pilot's voice came up.I massaged my temples while pushing my reading glasses up. It has been two weeks of trying to seal a multi-billion dollar deal. At first, my reputation almost ruined my chances of winning. But I drafted a plan with my PR team, and it succeeded. "Did you call me, sir?" I turned around and frowned. My new personal assistant, or should I say soon-to-be ex personal assistant? She clearly doesn't understand the meaning of 'I don't mix business with pleasure.'Her shirt had gotten tighter since we got here. She was literally pushing her assets right in my face. She's beautiful. Well endowed.I couldn't break that one rule even if I wanted to.Ashley was perfect. She never tried to seduce me. It helps that I wasn't her type, which still baffled me. I was every girl's type. What kind of men does she like? It's none of
ASHLEY He didn't even glance at me.Not once. It ignited something in me.Sadness. I couldn't pinpoint why.Dinner with Kat was amazing. I learnt that she took care of him when he was a child. It explained the closeness between them. That night, I was able to fall asleep easily. __^__^__^__^__^__^__^__^__^__^__^__^__^__^__^One week.Seven days.He went on a business trip the following morning. He hasn't been back since. The mansion felt suffocating whenever Kat left for her house. I couldn't possibly talk to Luciana. Life's boring. Without his presence. Without the weird feelings I felt around him. It's also good in a way. It allowed me to organise my thoughts. Compose myself. To try to understand the weird feelings I felt whenever he was around. To understand what was going on with me.When Maya's text came in to hang out, I couldn't decline the offer."Do you mind watching over Luciana for a few hours?" I asked Katrina. She stared at me for a second before her face broke i
NICHOLAS "How was the interview?" I asked, looking up from my laptop."It went well, sir. She will resume tomorrow," the director in charge replied.I sipped my coffee while leaning back in my chair."Keep the list of the top five applicants. In case she doesn't meet my expectations.""Understood, sir.""You can leave."He got up and left my office. My secretary entered almost immediately. "Mark is here to see you. Should I let him in?"I nodded and continued with the task I was dealing with."Good afternoon, boss," Mark greeted, and I gestured for him to sit."Any information?"He nodded. "To an extent, yes. I will know whoever it is soon.""Find her soon."He nodded before leaving. He was my private investigator. I needed to find the mother of that girl. She will take her daughter back when I find her. The rest of the day went by slowly. Attending to files. Going to meetings. I got down from my car and stepped out. I headed out of the garage into the house. I could smell the t
