MasukLively chatter echoed through the ballroom, and mild music in the background kept the mood.
Time was slowly reaching the awaited hour. Excitement and expectation could be heard and seen in the eyes of every unmated shifter present, old and young alike. At the forefront of it all was Alpha Collins with his children by his side, ready to give a welcome speech to the guests. With a spoon, he gently tapped the glass on his other hand, and the soft, crisp sound silenced the ballroom and drew all eyes to him. “It is with great pleasure that I welcome you all on this fateful night,” Alpha Collins began Beside him, Gemma's eyes swept through every face present, searching. “The Blood Moon comes only once a year, and this year's, on this wonderful day, we have the pleasure of hosting you. I and my family and the entire Winter Pack are truly grateful to host you,” he continued. Some of the guests nodded, and a few others hummed. Collins stood still and expressionless at his side while Gemma slipped away. She moved between the guests with a frown on her face. Disappointment beginning to settle. “Let us celebrate and thank the goddess, Selene, for smiling on us and blessing us once again this year…” Alpha Collins’ voice began to fade in Gemma's ears as worry and anger began spreading its roots through her heart and thoughts. “I pray that everyone gathered here seeking for their fated partner to be blessed with them tonight.” The crowd cheered and clapped, the sound startling Gemma who grumbled and cursed. “Where the hell is he?” She muttered, glaring at every corner she looked, especially at the main entrance. “Once again. I welcome you to the Winter Pack and the Blood Moon. Drink, eat, and be merry,” Alpha Collins concluded as the crowd clapped once again. Gemma turned and glared at her father and brother, inwardly blaming them for making her believe her dream man was coming. Her eyes narrowed as she saw Austin, her father's beta approached him and whispered into his ears. She quickly walked back to where they were, almost running, bumping into people but didn't stop to even apologize. Alpha Collins turned to Julian and said, “I'll leave the ballroom to you,” he said, knowing he probably heard everything the beta said. Julian gave a nod and a light hum. Gemma quickly pulled Julian aside, her grip a little tighter than necessary, but Julian’s expression remained placid. “You said he was coming,” she said in a whisper. “Yes, and…?” Julian asked with a hint of annoyance in his tone. “Isn't it obvious?” Gemma asked. “He isn't here.” Julian shook off her hand and stepped back. “Then go get him here yourself.” he said and walked away. Gemma stomped her foot and puffed her cheeks, but Julian paid her no mind. Alpha Collins followed his beta out of the ballroom. He didn't bother much about those in there now because just like Julian, everyone in the hall right now were single Alphas, alpha heirs, or those below these ranks. The guests he should entertain were either still on their way or have just arrived and have been sent to wait somewhere else. That was what his beta just came to tell him. “How many are here?” Alpha Collins asked. “five,” Beta Austin replied, and Alpha Collins nodded. “What about him?” Alpha Collins asked again. He didn't need to be specific as the beta already knew who his alpha was referring to. “There's news that he's on his way. He'll be here soon,” Austin replied. “The other alphas also know this and have become restless, too.” he added. Alpha Collins sighed, running a hand through his hair as they moved through the corridor with large strides. Meanwhile, away from the packhouse where everything else was happening, Rhea sat on the ground, knees drawn to her chest, chin placed on them. Her hands hugged her legs. On her ankles were chains. The music from the ballroom often drifted into her ears, but she never once reacted to it. She just wished it would be over soon so she could go back inside. She never wished to be in the ballroom. All she wanted was to go back to her little room in the basement, but even that wasn't enough because Julian and Gemma didn't think it would be enough to keep her out of sight. And now… She was out in the cold, chained to a tree in the backyard, the ground covered in snow and with no covering whatsoever. Her eyes grew heavier by the second, yet the biting cold wouldn't even let her sleep. But Rhea was determined to have at least a little sleep before they came for her again. But just then, she heard footsteps approaching where she was, and her heart began racing. She sniffed the air, trying to pick up a scent even with a nearly frozen nose, and when she succeeded in picking up the scent, she frowned and sprung up to her feet, alarmed. It was an unfamiliar accent. To Rhea, it was nothing good. There was never anything good about being found or seen by anyone. To her, everyone was danger. The closer the steps got to her, the more her fear grew. Just thinking of what this person approaching would do to her already had her forgetting that she was bound and tried to run only to be pulled back by the chains, and she fell. She wanted to scream and cry out as pain shot through her knees at the impact with the ground, but she knew nothing good ever came from her voice being heard. So she just muffled her voice and fought against the tears threatening to spill. The footsteps soon stopped beside her. A tall and broad figure towering over her. She shut her eyes tightly, but she could feel a heated gaze on her and she wished she could turn invisible. “Why are you chained out in the cold?” The person asked and Rhea flinched.“Who the f*ck did this to you?” Dante’s growl vibrated through the room, low and dangerous, the kind that made the air feel heavier. For a moment, no one spoke.Julian stiffened.Rhea instinctively took a small step back. Not because she thought Dante would hurt her. It was just instincts and the raw anger she saw in his eyes. His eyes were still fixed on her cheek. The red fingerprints stood out clearly against her pale skin.Dante’s jaw tightened.“Answer me,” he demanded,“Who did this to you?” Rhea trembled, and when he saw her like that, he drew in a deep breath as holding something back. His jaws clenched.Rhea looked away, her eyes now on her feet as fear began to take over once again. She bit the inside of her cheek as if that would help get rid of the fear. Her fingers slowly dropped from her cheek, but the burning sensation remained. She glanced at the door briefly, knowing Gemma was still somewhere outside.“...It's nothing,” she said softly. He was already this angry. He m
Rhea tossed and turned on the bed, unable to sleep no matter how hard she tried. The bed was comfortable, better than anything she'd ever laid on, but it was something that was foreign to her.She rolled and lay on her back. Her eyes on the ceiling and her mind began processing everything that had transpired since that morning until now. “Alpha Dante,” she whispered, the name heavy on her tongue. She lifted her hand and stared at her wrist where he held her and led her here. She also remembered the warmth she felt from his body when he picked her up after breaking the chains. Her tail moved on its own, and her cheek turned pink as blood rushed up.She tapped her cheeks, shaking her head as she reprimanded herself to stop thinking like that. When was the last time she felt such warmth? The last person to hold her so close and with so much care was her mother, and that was a long time ago. Thanks to Alpha Dante, she had eaten until she was filled. Her wounds were also healed by a hea
Several moments later, inside a guest's room, Rhea sat on the edge of a bed. Her posture was cautious, and her senses on high alert. She could hear their voices behind the door as Dante addressed his subordinates. She followed Dante when he told her to because she knew it was better to go with than to stay behind. She would be nothing but a sheep in the midst of literal wolves. Everything that happened inside the ballroom still felt like a dream. It all happened so fast that she was unable to follow it all, but what stuck with her was that Alpha Dante was hellbent on keeping her by his side, and it baffled her. What was his motive? He was ready to kill Gemma and make an enemy of Alpha Collins and the Winter Pack, all for her sake. Rhea couldn't think of any reason why he would do that. The door opened, and Dante entered. His steps halted for a second when their eyes met before he fully stepped in and closed the door behind him. Under his gaze, Rhea felt small like a rabbit bef
Dante’s words hung heavy in the air, the silence that settled over the ballroom, making them louder. Dante and Alpha Collins held each other's gaze, the air charging with growing tension. For a moment, Alpha Collins' eyes shifted towards Rhea, but Dante was quick to block his line of sight, shielding her from Alpha Collins. “Well?” Dante probed. “It would be a shame to give something as insignificant as that to you,” Alpha Collins said through clenched jaws. “I don't care,” Dante breathed. “Do we have a deal?” “And if I refuse?” Alpha Collins asked. “It changes nothing,” Dante replied, stepping back until he reached Rhea. He grabbed her hand. “I will just take her and leave.” Rhea swallowed a lump in her throat, and her body turned stiff. His words overwhelmed her. Why was he so persistent about taking her with him? No one has ever done that before. She raised her head slightly, peeking cautiously at him as if afraid to be caught looking at him. His countenance was dark, al
The more he looked at her, the more his patience was being tested, but at least she responded to him, however faint her responses were. But one thing truly grated against his nerves, and that was her reaction to Alpha Collins’ son. It was as if his presence was a blade hanging over her neck.Should I just kill him? He thought, his gaze locked on Julian whose eyes remained on Rhea. He gritted his teeth. Instead, he asked, “Where is your father?” Julian’s gaze finally shifted from Rhea to Dante, and he almost took a step back as soon as he met Dante’s glare.“He is with the other alphas,” Julian replied before he could even realize it.“Lead the way,” Dante said, his hand taking hold of Rhea’s wrist. His gaze met hers, and he said, his tone soft, compared to how he had spoken to Julian. “Let's go meet Alpha Collins.”Rhea just stared at him, her eyes silently pleading with him to leave her behind. “You'll be fine,” he assured her. “Trust me.” Rhea’s gaze moved from Dante to the oth
Rhea didn't know why, but when he picked her up, she did not resist. Maybe it was due to instincts, not wanting to be beaten for disobeying. Or perhaps it was because he was kind enough to notice her wounds and had shown concern for. Right now, they moved through the snow, his long legs made the distance seem much shorter than she knew it to be. Then she saw his eyes glazed over in a mindlink, and once again, panic surged, and she struggled to leave his arms, but his hold on her grew firmer the more she struggled.“I won't hurt you,” he assured. But Rhea couldn't believe any of it. “My people will get you a healer soon,” he said. “Where would you like me to take you? Just point in the direction.” Rhea hesitated but eventually gave him directions. Meanwhile, inside the ballroom, Reid stood with a frown. The message he had just received from his alpha replaying in his head again.“Find a healer and bring them to me. Be fast about it,” his Alpha had said.He didn't explain and didn't
