Chapter Nineteen

We need to get out of here. He can’t make us shift. I look around the cage for anything that can break the lock. I spot a sharp rock just outside the back of the cage and I crawl over and reach my hand through the bars but it’s just out of reach.

“What are you doing?” Drew asks me.

“I need to get that rock. There’s no way in hell I’m staying here another night.”

“Here take this!” Seb throws a stick at the cage and it makes a noise as it hits the bars. We all go silent and look at the stairwell, praying the man didn’t hear.

After a minute I rush over and grab the stick before crawling back and attempting to move the rock closer with the stick. The stick is just long enough to nudge it towards me a tiny bit. I reach out my arm again trying to grab it. My face squished against the cold metal bars.

“Just a little further,” I tell myself out loud. I feel the rock below my fing
