Chapter 4

작가: Snowy Juniper
On the day of the banquet, three days later, Marco was waiting at the side door to meet me. "The body double is already secured at the safe house. Your fake ID and liquid funds are all set."

With only six hours left until my departure, I handed him my luggage. He looked at me and asked, "Have you really thought this through?"

"I have," I replied. "Starting today, Selena Black is dead."

Marco took the suitcase, his eyes turning red. "Don't worry. I'll be guarding the exit here."

By the time Charles walked over, Marco had already left.

Dressed in a silver-gray suit just like on our wedding day, Charles stepped up in front of me and personally pulled up my zipper.

"When tonight is over, you'll reclaim your rightful place as donna."

I looked at myself in the mirror. "How are you testing me tonight? Will you stay by my side?"

Charles fell silent for a moment, then placed an earpiece into my ear.

"You must learn to face danger alone. I can't tell you in advance, nor can I stay by your side. But I will monitor your situation the entire time and support you from behind."

He spoke with total solemnity, but I nearly burst out laughing right then and there.

He wanted me to learn how to survive on my own, but he had no idea that I was preparing to leave him forever.

Charles took my hand, his palm still warm. "We're only one step away. Once you complete this test, the entire family will respect you, just like me."

I pulled my hand back and said softly, "Okay."

As we walked into the banquet hall, people in the corridor were whispering in muted tones.

"Is she going to run out crying again this time?"

"The don has given her way too many chances!"

Charles heard them, but he merely turned to me and said, "Perform well."

When the doors to the banquet hall opened, my steps came to a halt. Blue roses covered the long tables.

Six months ago, when I was first locked in the wine cellar, the hitman who kidnapped me had placed a bouquet of blue roses right at the door.

"When these flowers die, so do you."

Susie actually knew about this, too.

Standing on the steps, she smiled and said, "Tonight, I will help you completely break free from your past, Selena."

My fingers gripped my dress tightly. Inside the security room, Charles watched me through the screen.

Suddenly, the lights went out. A hand reached out from the darkness, pressing a sharp blade against my neck.

Using the moonlight, I turned my head and looked clearly into the man's eyes. My pupils violently contracted. This man was the exact hitman who had kidnapped me six months ago!

They were actually unhinged enough to pull him out of prison for this!

Inside the security room, Susie frowned. "She's losing her composure again."

"Keep going," Charles said, clenching his fists. "Hold on for a few more minutes. I believe she can make it through."

The hitman leaned down and whispered in my ear, "What's wrong, sweetheart? Missed me? I won't let you get away this time!"

As he spoke, he dragged me toward the exit. Struggling violently, a tiny sliver of hope still lingered in my heart for Charles. "Charles! He's the man who kidnapped me back then! Save me!"

I cried out to Charles through the earpiece, but there was nothing on the line except static.

I didn't know that inside the security room, Charles had panicked the moment he recognized the man.

"Susie, didn't I tell you to find a double? Why did you release the real one?!"

Yet Susie showed no remorse as she argued, "Only by making Selena face the person she fears most can we test her true reaction!"

Hearing this, Charles turned his eyes back to the monitor. By then, I had already been dragged down to the underground garage. In the next second, I jerked my head violently, and the blade in his hand slashed straight across the side of my neck.

The blood pack ruptured, splashing blood across the wall, and the security footage shook violently.

Charles' face instantly drained of color.

"Selena!"

He rushed out of the security room like a madman.

In the dark, Marco tackled the hitman and pulled open the hidden door behind the wall. Stripping off my blood-stained gown, I changed into the clothes prepared in advance.

Behind me, Charles’ voice tore through the air in an absolute frenzy. "Lock down the estate! Seal every perimeter exit!"

Before stepping into the escape tunnel, I looked back one last time. Seeing the blood all over the ground, Charles grabbed his earpiece and frantically screamed my name. But I would never answer him again.

A few minutes later, he found the body in the corner of the wall. That face, identical to mine, lay peacefully in a pool of blood with her eyes closed.

Charles froze on the spot. With trembling hands, he pulled the corpse into his arms.

"Selena..."

The snow in Harborwick had just stopped. My father's old estate was built halfway up the mountain, with a clear view of the lake outside the window. The water was a deep, striking blue, and the distant mountain peaks were capped with white snow. As the fireplace crackled, Marco placed the copper key into my palm."Everything in the safe is the full inheritance left to you by your father."I gripped the key tightly and whispered, "I will definitely protect it."Our people were waiting for me in the conference room. The port manager, the casino directors, and the executives of each major company were all sitting straight and formal. The moment I walked in, they stood up in unison. "Principessa."In that single second, my footsteps paused. No one called me Charles’ wife or asked if I was scared again. They recognized only me as Selena Black.I took my seat at the head of the table and flipped open the ledger. "Renegotiate all the old contracts at the port. Recalculate the casino r

At midnight, the official websites of major companies under the Moretti family updated with a single announcement page. Right at the top of the home page was a single sentence.[Official Disclosure of Evidence Regarding Susie Graham's Attempted Murder of Selena Moretti.]I sat in my office, watching Marco hit the publish button.Within ten minutes of posting, the comment section exploded."Using someone's kidnapping trauma for a sick test? What a monster.""Charles allowed that garage incident to happen? And he says he loves her?""Setting dogs on a woman suffering from kidnapping trauma… Charles needs to get kicked out of the Moretti family too!""Susie and Charles deserve each other—one is vicious, and the other is blind!""Thank goodness Selena came back alive. I hope she thoroughly settles scores with this awful pair!"I read through them line by line before closing the webpage.I had waited six whole months for people to finally see what I went through, but inside, I fel

In the warehouse district of the Ironvale port, both sides of the long table were packed with people. The moment I pushed the door open, everyone turned to look at me in unison."Selena?""Isn't she dead?""Is that a ghost?"Listening to everyone's doubts, I cleared my throat. "Selena Moretti is indeed dead. Standing in front of you right now is Selena Black."Hearing this, everyone stood up."Principessa." The voices fell in neat unison.Marco pulled out the chair at the head of the table for me. I sat down and flipped open the ledger in front of me. "Starting today, port revenue will be redistributed according to my father's original bylaws."The few people around the table exchanged glances, but said nothing.I raised my head. "Any objections? Anyone with an objection can leave right now!"Everyone lowered their heads; no one stood up. Only one man asked in a low voice, "What about Charles...""Charles can manage his Moretti family. He has no say over the assets of the Bl

The next day, Charles slammed Susie’s bank statements down in front of her."It was you! You paid the hitman, making him actually try to kill Selena!"Color drained from Susie’s face. She lunged forward, clawing desperately at his shirt."No, that’s not true, Charles! I was only trying to help cure Selena! That man had been locked away so long, he didn't have the guts to kill anyone anymore. I only gave him money to make the act look realistic, to help Selena finally break free!"Charles looked down at her, the suffocating aura radiating off him making it hard to even breathe."An act?""Yes," Susie sobbed, nodding frantically. "I did it all for the family! I'm sad Selena is dead, too, but the family needs a donna. I'll be more obedient and sensible than her, and I can take a lot of weight off your shoulders."As she spoke, she tried to make her way into Charles' arms, but Charles abruptly kicked his foot out, shoving her away."Get out! When she died, you didn't shed a single

I was escorted into the car by Marco. Sitting in the backseat, I watched the surveillance monitor as real-time feeds from the estate flickered across the screen frame by frame. On the rain-soaked gravel of the garage, Charles was on the ground, clutching the corpse covered in a white sheet."Selena!"He screamed my name over and over until his voice turned hoarse. But the person in his arms would never answer him again. His men stood around him in a tight perimeter, none of them brave enough to step closer.Charles raised his head, his eyes bloodshot. "Lock down the estate! Find that hitman! Bring him to me dead or alive!"I sat in front of the monitor holding a cup of coffee, watching his descent into madness. The coffee grew cold in my hands, untouched.Driving up front, Marco asked in a low voice, "Principessa, should I turn off the monitor?"I nodded slightly, then turned my gaze toward the window. On the third day, the estate held a funeral. The Moretti family never held
